Just like people, chemical substances can be identified by their individual composition and by the way they react to their surroundings. They have distinct and important relationships with each other. And, like all of us, when put in certain situations, they are capable of radical change. Today, Will discusses the physical and chemical changes substances can undergo, as well as how to recognize which of those changes has taken place.
Presented by Arizona State University and Crash Course, Study Hall is a tailored series of KZbin Learning Playlists aimed at helping you with resources to navigate college and your education path. Count on Study Hall to guide you to and through college.
Thanks to viewers like you, Study Hall has grown and moved from the ASU KZbin channel, where it launched in 2020, to its own channel. View your favorite videos and new ones at links.asu.edu/.... We can’t wait to see you there!

Right! My chem teacher rambled about his ex wife, panicked, would write the wrong equations on the board and we'd have to correct him, cried when we criticized that he was teaching us a wrong technique (that we had learned correctly the year previous)....it was great 👍🏼 this is saving me! Going to take Chem and Organic Chem here soon to check boxes to apply for different program 😭😣 pray 4 me lol

1:52 "When water freezes, it's molecules move closer together" ...true with other molecules, but not water. That's one of the reasons that makes water so unique and why we love it so much! Otherwise, excellent! Prof Brenda

I will be taking college chemistry this course, and decided to look on youtube and I am glad that I did. I enjoyed that you share the information and use it into life setting forms to help pull it together. This is great, but I'll take a break from now and join in tomorrow to follow up. It would be helpful to do a pop quiz over the topic to allow students to say the answers to make sure they understand. I know I need to polish up on my note taking skills and this why I share that helpful tip, but other than that it's highly helpful and don't seem to overwhelming. Great collaboration!

At 4:18 in, he mentions emission of heat, light, or odor as being indicators of chemical reactions, but what about for something like the aurora? When electrons jump from an excited state to the ground state and emit a photon, they aren't forming new substances, nor are they even changing their state of matter or creating or destroying bonds. They are only changing energy levels. Are electrons changing energy levels within an atom considered a chemical change??

In this video, we don't dive "too deep into the philosophical nature of identity". But will ASU and Crash Course produce a series where you do? Where you explore the nature of the self and social identity? And other philosophical ideas relevant to being a good human being in our world: ethical reasoning, scientific reasoning, measures and statisics, war and peace, resistance and non-violence, art and not art, education and vocation, etc. Crash Course has an amazing philosophy series, and this will follow up on it covering essential and tricky concepts. I have an unlikely host suggestion: Sal Khan from Khan Academy. He's into cosmopolitan philosophy, and has a studio-worthy background too: his bookshelf with great books. Another possible host and/or writer-contributor is Jonardon Ganeri, proponent of cosmopolitan philosophy and expert in both Indic and Western philosophical traditions. CC Philosophy is one of their best series ever, and it needs the Study Hall sequel like Chemistry. So if you're making Study Hall Philosophy, please consider two more guiding tenets. One is to also impart tactics for mastering the essential capabilities of philosophy, inside and outside the classroom, and to put them to use to improve the world. The other is to also launch it as a Khan Academy course with practice exercises by the KA team. This is another reason for inviting Sal to host it, though I think he'd be an amazing host in general for his genuine curiosity and love for learning across disciplines. That being said, thank you so much for this amazing video. I'm a student not just of chemistry but of philosophy, history, literature, and other disciplines. I find polymathic learning enlightening in living the good life. And I'm so incredibly grateful to Crash Course and ASU for series like this one, and I hope to see more Crash Course/Study Hall.

Is it just me or is a gas leak *not* a chemical reaction. AFAIK, there's no change going on there, just the release of smelly chemicals that have been added to the gas. Perhaps there is something I don't know about the process though?

The content is really meant for anyone who is looking to learn more in regards to chemistry and in this case, physical and chemical changes. That may be a high school student taking chemistry or even a college student who is needing help in their chemistry course. And of course, any other learners who are interested in this topic.
