It's intuitive to think about squaring or doubling something. It's just a number multiplied by itself. You can think of it like folding paper. But, what when you see a number to the negative square? You can't fold paper negative times? Or a number with a fraction in the exponent? What is that about? Well, that's the topic of this episode of Study Hall: Algebra!
Presented by Arizona State University and Crash Course, Study Hall is a tailored series of KZbin Learning Playlists aimed at helping you with resources to navigate college and your education path. Count on Study Hall to guide you to and through college.
Thanks to viewers like you, Study Hall has grown and moved from the ASU KZbin channel, where it launched in 2020, to its own channel. View your favorite videos and new ones at links.asu.edu/gostudyhallh1. We can’t wait to see you there!

Oh my gosh, I understand Algebra now!...because you show how it can apply in real life, such as your paper folding. You're a wonderful teacher!!!! I love learning. This makes me miss school. I am 44 and already have a college degree, but I want to go back, just to learn more.

I was already 30 by the time I "got" algebra. I can't change my high-school experience but I can try to help the next generation find a love for math. Thank you for this easily digestible series.

At 7:08 it states that the left statement is equal to the right, but I don't understand how we can or why we would move the 3 coefficient from z to x. Please help me out there, I don't want let this to fly over my head.

Think of it as x to the power of seven equals x times x times x times x times x times x times x and you will understand - there is no apparent reason for it except for making it a little more simple and pretty

@@ennowinkler8517 think I get it. Since they are all in multiplication, it doesn't matter what order they are in so long as the exponents stick with their variables...?
@Yomama5923
@Yomama5923 3 жыл бұрын
@@derekcook8358 right. It is simplified through what we call the commutative property of multiplication, which basically says if stuff is all being multiplied together, you can move the order around. Also, that coefficient of 3 is actually multiplying to the z, so we have: x⁷ × 3z = x⁷×3×z = 3×x⁷×z = 3x⁷z
