Obviously it's a night and day difference with the increased geometry and foliage on the cliffsides, but I'd also point out the extensive work on the tree billboards. I also particularly like the luminescence of the snow.

I think that taking these shots is the only time I've actually seen that part of the Megapithecus arena, always ended up fighting it down the hill :D The Dragon doesn't look too different, but the lighting isn't as good - of course it's possible the storm is random but I've no idea. Some areas you can barely tell they're the same place, others the changes are more subtle, but damn it looks pretty.

Yea with nanite you dont need tree billboards. its just trees that don't despawn with range. they just get less detailed the further away you move from them

1:08, that little mini island out there to the corner in where I first started playing when I was maybe 9 with my older brother. Right there on that tiny island in the right corner I has a thatch hut with a carno and so many dilos. I really miss playing with my brother and hearing the beginning of the ark song makes me think of those good days. Ark will always be held close to me as one of those special memories. I just wish I could play 1 more time on that world with him. My favorite memory was going into the cave not to far from him and seeing the lizards on the tip of cave walls and getting rabies.

Yeah agreed. New colour fits jungle bits really well but in the mountains and redwoods etc it would have been nice to keep some greystone. Especially since the ruins are greystone still it seems.

I get what everyone is saying about the rocks going from grey to a more sandstone colour. I think the sandstone looks good for beaches and stuff, but all they really need to do is change the colour of rocks the higher they are in the world. Not a hard thing to do with the power of UE5. Other than that and a few other very minor colour and contrast issues. This looks amazing and is genuinely a well done remaster/remake. Especially when compared to other “remasters” that have come out in past few years…

This is a great comparison. I still love the old water, they really did water well in the original release. The new water in Ascended is amazing though, and the underwater flora is supurb. I hope they add some dramatic thunder and lightning to the rain and make some real storms.

Nanite Foliage doing such a stellar job. You can really see the difference when you no longer have Trees LOD'ing all over the place and changing into billboards. The atmospheric fog really sells the whole "Youre on a jungle island" vibe. All of the extra Foliage and LUMEN lighting really make the dense jungles feel so much more dangerous. And the ocean is flippin terrifying holy shit!

My only issues so far are Lumen related sadly, shadows will often flicker or there'll be some artifacting around the character, and the brightness overall is a bit too much. I know many aren't a fan of the fog but I agree that it really sells it, especially at a distance, turning the volumetric clouds/fog off leaves everything a bit too pristine for my liking

@@freynlives I can see how the volumetric atmosphere options are an issue with competitive play in particular. Id expect PVP mains to not like it cuz it restricts long range vision. Idk if the lumen GI artifacts depend on driver support or hardware. Id imagine with less RT capable hardware you probably have much worse shadows and more artifacting

@@Bitt3rh0lz @freynlives Lumen uses something called Virtual Shadow Maps (VSM), which is a purely rasterized technique to achieve high-res (non-flickering) shadows without LOD popin (just like Nanite is a virtualized geometry system) but ASA to me doesn't seem to be using VSM. VSM can use RT for stuff like realistic sharpness scaling based on proximity to the shadow casting object but doesn't absolutely require RT-capable hardware. E.g. Fortnite uses software Lumen on the consoles. Also Lumen artifacts are due to SSR/SSAO and can NOT realistically be fixed without straight up replacing Lumen with pure raytracing effects/pathtracing (or ugly, non-dynamic, inaccurate and low res last gen tech). tl,dr: Studio Wildcard might not be done with their UE5 feature integration... or polish for the game in general.

I just don't like how its all sandstone like on the old map the grey stone and not everything being oversaturated was really pleasing to the eye although in a lot of other shots it works great and looks great but I wish they keept the grey stone in some areas especially because in some shots you can't make out the river because of everything being yellow

Don’t get me wrong the game looks incredible and I definitely think it’s an improvement, BUT, everything kinda looks the same everywhere aside from the snow biome and red woods and maybe the beaches and I don’t really like the additions that were unnecessary like the massive rock at south 1 that basically gets rid of the whole beach there. My first words while playing this game were “I can’t even recognize where I am”. Which can be a good thing that means the map wasn’t reskined and wasn’t just a (ctrl c, ctrl v) scenario but being able to see some landmarks would have been fine with me, but now I can’t see anything in the jungle and there’s no open areas like there were before. But I’m just nitpicking a little but it is a real criticism I have against it but it’s not a dealbreaker I’m gonna play this game all the way through and do every dlc.

Tough balance to find really, it needs to be recognisable but not identical, I think they've done a decent job of it. The overall shape of the land is the same just not necessarily the same trees/rocks, the caves would've been the best places to restructure I think - either new locations or new layouts.

Great work as always! I love how some places are completely unrecognizable. However, with most of that due to foliage or weather effects like fog/mist/etc. I'm curious how much scorched earth will change, not exactly a lot of foliage they can add to a desert map. Also I'm beyond hyped for Ab, Rag, and LI. They are going to be gorgeous. Imagine the marshlands on Ab? The highlands on Rag? or that jungle with about 3 or 4 waterfalls in the middle on lost island?(it always reminded me of a scene in Tarzan) Those are going to look sooo good.

Not seen you for a bit :) General terrain shape is the same but there's been some serious changes to the detailing, one of the mountains has a whole set of ruins and stairs running up the side (didn't notice until afterwards or I'd have included it!) Extinction is the only map I'm not really expecting to be wowed by, due to the wasteland, but perhaps they'll surprise us!

Im sure the sunken forest, biome domes and city will still be a huge wow. I actually expect quite a bit for extinction. but with scorched earth assumedly being the next map to release, I'm curious how they are really going to wow the community with anything other than the fasolasuchus. Just doesn't seem like you can do much with a desert map. I guess time will tell though, I'm sure they've got something up their sleeve.

i know that there are alot of people who really like the change of the more rocky areas going from grey to more sandstone colours but honestly im not a fan, they couldve kept the more inland areas more grey and stoney and the outer areas more sandstoney, also not a fan of the vibrancy of the leaves and just how bright they are, i feel sons of the forest did a great job of getting the colours just right, for a higher quality feel.

There's a popular setting to disable the volumetric clouds, mostly for FPS reasons. It makes the sky clear but also removes most of the mist too.

Turning down bloom helps reduce the intensity of the fog, it's still there it just doesn't glow so much.

I've don't extensive testing on both ASE and ASA. ASA with everything set to medium manually except for global illumination and shadows set to epic or high looks better than ark ASE on Epic and ASA has better performance if comparing it visually. Ive played both in 4k with an rtx 4080 and 5800x3d cpu. They are going to optimize the game. They just need as many people as they can to get enough analytics and bugs as possible to fix. ASA will be better than ASE. But it is our duty to hold them to it.

Its a shame there is so much haze/fog/smoke on the new one... Nearly every single comparison shot is all fogged out... thats too bad.

It’s great but one thing I’ll say is the overseer room shouldn’t have had plants added to the floor. It makes the room look too full of nature, when it should be cold and lifeless.
