Oh, heavenly days! I've listened to Anna Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Renee Fleming, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Jessye Norman (which had always been my favorite version) sing this song prior to hearing this and the studio recording from the same year. This is by far my new favorite rendition of the stunning song. Such grace, such control and she makes it sound so easy.

Auger was like an angel sent down to give us God’s gift of music and then suddenly she was gone. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

Perfectly stated, my friend! She seemed to have no ego at all, offering herself as a transparent conduit for the composer's thoughts to be transmitted directly to the listener. Angelic is the word, all right.

I do not know why in the concerts, there is always someone who is coughing equal to a tuberculosis person and could cough lower or indoors. Arleen Auger was a " Angel " of music and sang with her soul associated with technical perfection in the voice she possessed and this song of Strauss in her voice makes me cry a lot and pity that she passed away very early. #RestInPeaceArleenAuger

Strauss...what a nasty way to treat singers. Having to creep gingerly into the song after the interminable 1 minute intro (1/4 of the piece). Most all singers--no matter how famous they are--sound like hell on those first tenuous notes. I think Arleen Auger does it better than almost anyone.

It's always odd to me to hear this Lied sung by a woman. The author of the poem wrote it as a love song one man sings to another, and I always have a man in my mind's eye when I hear it. Auger is lovely, but Fischer-Dieskau does for me.

I have yet to hear a bass-baritone who can approach his rich tone, musicality and ability to convey the emotion of the music to the listener. No one comes close! I would have loved to hear him in a quartet with Auger, Hunt Lieberson, and a tenor as yet to be determined. Any suggestions?
