Just saw Arlo in Marin. He was great. Joan Baez attended that concert as did Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Wavy Gravy. Met them all after the concert. All such super people and so gracious to their fans. Got pix's of all of them and autographs!

Always liked Arlo, his music, that special quality in his voice (timbre?), perfect for folk songs. Saw him in concert long ago, City of New Orleans knocked us out. And he seems to have retained the same spirit he had then, a passion for life, and what's right and wrong about it. If you lived through the 50's and 60's man, part of it will always be with you. And I still like hippie girls.

I COULDN’T agree more! It was way too easy for those of us who never went to Vietnam to have a movement against it. Nobody was listening. Once the Vets started coming home and so many actually felt just as passionate about getting out? We KNEW we ALL had something!

This from an essay I read today on Arlo Guthrie's facebook page: "And I'm supporting government representatives (where they exist), who understand what's at stake - which generally means I'm an Independent politically. I have friends left, right and center who share my concerns. On this stuff, no one party has spoken up more than another. I remain a party of one."

I don't agree a lot with Arlo, but I find him to be an amazing figure and an all around nice guy.. He is the kind of liberal I could have a beer(s) with and discuss politics late into the night.. He is quite different from today's foaming at the mouth left wing radical.

I was just thinking that it seems overdue for another big period of youth culture and social change. There was a big change in the 1920s and the sixties came four decades later. It seems like we're past due for something like that. I'm too old now to do anything but watch in amazement, but I'd be happy to.

Brokaw quoting Baez, who said the 60s protesters didn't follow thru' but quit after 4 YEARS to raise families and get rich, asked Guthrie what he thought of her opinion. I think he stuttered out a somewhat coherent reply but what he should have said, with confidence, was; WTF is she talking about!! They protested for FOUR full years. Should they have dedicated their entire lifetimes to it? Become professional protesters maybe? Like herself? Who certainly made a bundle of money singing her protests Such hypocrisy. But Brokaw tried to piss him off probably. Guthrie didn't react.

Arlo Guthrie registered as a Republican and supported Republican candidates just a few years ago. There has been nothing since that time to clarify his political position. I wonder how he felt about his party in 2012. Independents don't register to join the Republican Party. Guthrie confirmed his Republican ties in an interview with NYT July 2009.

He registered Republican to vote for Ron Paul. Said he was the only one making sense, and he was right. Which is precisely why the Republican Party stole the nomination from him and gave it to Mitt Romney.
@MichaelDewey
@MichaelDewey 12 жыл бұрын
Arlo can vote as he wants. I know from comments from him on arlonet, he is no fan of the rights abortion issue or the their drug war stand. He probably registered as republican, for same reason this 54 year old space cowboy did, which is because Ron Paul's Foreign Policy, closing overseas bases. And also Paul's monetary plans. Those 2 issues are not going away, or they are breaking American's backs.
@da324

Tom Brokaw is clueless. He doesn't even hear what Arlo is saying. We didn't all disappear and get big houses and start companies. A lot of us raised our kids to be aware and awake, and have real family values, and know how to love. This long sound bite is a typical media throw-away. Arlo is an aware and very hip man.

The 60's was the unleashing of hell...literally. The pill, shacking up, "luv, luv, luv" which was anything but love. People like Arlo, Joanie, Woodie, and Pete Seeger, were never interested in the true love of loving God. It was all about freedom from any kind of constraint.

I seem to remember him getting behind Nader, whatever election that was. In any case, my thought on the whole question of his politics is that it's been 45 years since Woodstock, and I wouldn't expect anyone else to remain exactly as he was in his youth. If I'm more in line with the points of view he expressed 20 years ago, I can stay as I am and let him change if he needs to. Or vice versa. (Probably more of an answer to someone else than you, but I'm responding to the topic in general)

Well, I 'd have to say the protest movements ended because they were successful. The vietnam war was stopped, eventually.only because of the protests. And the civil-rights protests resulted in several civil-rights laws that ended segregation. Those were the two main issues of the day. But they never ended the american folly of the assumption of being dictator to the rest of the world: telling other countries what to do, and even what kind of governments they can have, The govt is doing it still

I don't mean to quibble, but we didn't go to Viet Nam to tell them how to do things, we went to help the South Vietnamese protect their freedoms. They wanted us there to help. Ask any Vietnamese person in the USA today. We lost; they lost. Ask around and you'll hear the truth.
@hamnose

beeroosterm "If you took a few fucking minutes to conduct a little research, you'd see the truth rather than continue your bullshit rants" The truth? Like that fact that Vietnam stopped the killing in Cambodia, after 2 million had already died in it's war with the U.S? What about Philippines, Malaysia, the Holocaust, or Biafra? Most of the greatest tragedies aren't related to communism. Or are you really that blind? And I'm not a communist. So what if I was? I'll bet you own shirts from Vietnam. What a load of bullshit about "documented history and light of truth."

DukeLaCrosse20 Thats incorrect...we backed a brutal dictatorship in South Vietnam, who when he defected against us, we had stabbed to death in the back of a truck. 4 million vietnamese died. This had nothing to do with helping South vietnam and everything to do with projecting US power. Furthermore, the documents released since the era show clearly that the US had no motivation to help the vietnamese,.
@stevensimoneschi9029
@stevensimoneschi9029 9 жыл бұрын
beeroosterm You are a tool. The communists certainly comitted crimes but that doesnt detract from the 4 million killed by the US, inlcuding the use of chemical warfare. To point out the crimes as others as an attempt to justify ours is logic a 5 year old would dismiss.

Unfortunately, it was about money and making loads of it for some. We never listened to Ike when he tried to warn us against the Military Industrial Complex. Then and in Iraq many years later which Dick Cheney alone made over 39 billion dollars. Propaganda and lies bring these wars. No boat attacked in the Bay of Tonkin and no WMD's in Iraq. Sorry, but the truth can be painful.
