AS a young man in 1970-71 I was a volunteer at a small coffeehouse venue in the far south 'burbs of Chicago, a place in Richton Park (since incorporated into a bigger town) that was called the "12th of Never". I saw many musicians , both local and traveling through touring. Steve Goodman, Eddie and Fred Holstein, Ted Anderson, Leo Kottke and many others passed through. Learned "City of New Orleans " from Steve himself.

I listened to Alices Restaurant as is my thanksgiving tradition and this came up next to play but i paised it till today. PBS has been airing the good stuff for a long time now. I really enjoyed listening to this while i was in the yard working my boney fingers to the bone. I agree. I'm 62 grew up in Detroit watching the great rock and roll acts come through. I saw Jerry Jeff Walker open for Tom Waits at the Royal Oak Theater. That was my introduction to Folk. Never paid much attention to it after that but recently revisiting Jerry Jeff Walker Career I got turned on to Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, John Prine, Steve Goodman Etc. It seems like that's all I listen to now almost exclusively.

I took my sister to see Steve Martin at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill NJ in 1975. She was a senior in HS and I was treating her to a big persons night out. I had never heard of Steve Goodman. I remember Steve Martin but it was Goodman who blew us away with his act. I wish I could remember all of the songs he did. He was an amazing entertainer easily seen in this video.

Even though Stevie only got about 20 minutes onstage, fronting for Steve Martin, it was a great career opportunity move for him. There were many people like yourself, Thomas, who had never heard of him … until this tour together. And then, because of this tour with Martin, a whole new group of people began following him. Is it possible that you saw them together later than 1975, as I think Goodman was doing mostly solo gigs in ‘75? Personally, I saw them together in Hawaii in 1978. (As his friend, that was one of about 50 shows I was privileged to be with him.) At that time, I was a flight attendant, on a layover in Honolulu. Because I had to work a flight back to the mainland, I caught Stevie’s act (watching from backstage), hung out for a tiny bit more, and missed Steve Martin’s show altogether. Unfortunate timing, but it was still a wonderful experience!

I love Steve Goodman and am so grateful that my troubadour uncle Bud, my Mother’s brother, and my Dad, taught me these amazing songs and introduced me to this amazing generation of singer song writers as a child. I was 7 in 74 and love these songs and remember so many amazing times as a young kid. John, Kris, Hoyt, Guy Clark, Hoyt and so many! Gifts from heaven!

Steve loved John, and John loved Steve, and everyone loved both of them. Steve's passing in 1984 still hurts as much today as it did then, and I have a feeling John's passing will hurt forever as well.

And now we know, sadly. Both Prine and Hoyt were shining examples of refusing to compromise. Songs like Flag Decal, The Great Compromise, and Samstone (a song about a problem everyone knew about, that the VA wouldn't even acknowledge, and nobody was even talking about the problem then). Nixon took offense and he was banned from airplay for years. All for having Artistic Integrity.

In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

I caught Steve Goodman at the Mariposa Folk Festival in June of '76 and 77. An OUTSTANDING performer. His sets were loose, spontaneous, heartfelt, and heart-warming. He headlined a large concert at SUNY Buffalo about '78 or '79.....Outstanding!! He apparently had Leukemia all that time he was performing.....I sure wish there were better Concert tapings out there..... I heard, " It's a sin to tell a Lie" NUMEROUS times......and it was always different and fabulous....Once he said....if you break my heart I'll break your neck..."

Loved the piano playing of Arlo in the beginning, sounds like a player piano, in some old silent movie western!!! What a talent he has, glad to see he is still performing in 2023!!! He asked if i could type out some of his songs !! the stack was huge and my typing skills were nil. Tom, to follow up on your comment ... yes ... six months ago, here's a little more to the story. I tried to get Stevie's manager's help, but Al said he couldn't get it. Next I tried to get Arlo's help, but he said he didn't have access to it, either. Then I PLEADED with WTTW (telling them the long story of how I was in the studio all day with Stevie, and how much it mattered to me to be able to see it again) and they finally released it to me. Later I converted it to DVD. Later, still, I converted it to .mp4, so I could post it here. And I'm so happy that, to date, it's been viewed 175,000+ times. That's a lot of shared happiness!

I've always loved Arlo Guthrie's version of Steve Goodman' s song "CITY OF NEW ORLEANS" as their voices and songwriting styles are so entertwined! And Steve Goodman's "JESSIES JIGS AND OTHER FAVORITES" is one of my all-time favorite albums! Gotta love Hoyt Axton as well! I miss them all playing together as well! John Denver recorded ,"city of new orlings" and took the songwriting credits cause he changed a few words. It's well known Arlo called Denver and basically told him he would beat the shit out of him if he didn't apologize in public Denver did but the riff was never heald.😮

But to have a place like this video where you can go back and see yourself in person, caught in that time and place, is precious on another level. How great you spent the day with them. I wonder what the circumstances were. Congratulations to you, and thanks for posting this. I saw them around the same time period, then Arlo in the later years. His concert here in Chico, Ca., was a sweet spot in my world. When he told his stories, we didn’t want him to stop, and when he was singing and playing we didn’t want him to stop. Brilliant!

So cool! Everything I’ve ever heard about Steve Goodman is that he was a great, incredibly talented guy. I love John Prine’s story of songwriting with Steve, when they wrote “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” and Prine wanted no writer’s credit for it. They had spent a night mixing hotel room booze in a sink, writing songs, and going off the rails. Prine and Goodman did a lot of performing together, too. Hats off to you, John, for being a friend of Steve’s, you must be a great guy, too.

I saw Steve Goodman at the Boarding House in San Francisco in either 1979 or 1980. He was great. I heard, for the first time, the song "Talk Backwards" and almost wet my pants I laughed so hard. Sure do miss him. His music got me through some tough times. RIP Mr. Goodman.

Like to share my favorite Steve Goodman story. Saw him do a show at N.I.U. in Dekalb back in the mid '70's. We went to a little bar in town after the show and Steve came in for a drink before going back to Chicago. Someone asked him to do a song and he said he didn't have his guitar with him. Well the bartender handed him an old Sears Silvertone from behind the bar. He made that thing sing for almost an hour! God I miss him.

I was 22 in 1974 running as partner a Comics & Comix location on Telegraph Ave near UC-Berkeley. We played every thing of quality for a very diverse audience. Fond memories!

Arlo toured with his dad's friend, Pete Seeger, that I had a chance to see in Minneapolis. He very much supported Pete to make it Pete's show. He backed up Pete on a version of "Guantanamera" that I'll never forget. My friend from Spain, who only went because a group of us were going and his wife made him go with us, was sitting next to me and singing along with the audience with smiles and his loudest - and very good - singing voice. Pete and Arlo left Pera in a shock-of-smiles that evening.

My sister and I were co-op housing students at UW Madison in the early 70’s. After a brief stint in the scholarship co-ops we lived in a vacated frat house coed co-op on Langdon St. These tunes resonate. Every time I see Arlo I think of him in the film Alice’s Restaurant and the joyously quirky characters that were so true to that age of experimental space age community. Steve Goodman’ s songs convey the warmth of that age too. A pleasure to recall. Hoyt Axton is a new voice to me. He’s a hoot...I’ll have to listen for him some more.

Good eye/ear, George, recognizing how spontaneous this show was. When asked in the afternoon what he planned to play in the evening, Goodman looked at me and shrugged. How did he know what he'd want to play hours later? So he just made up a set list, knowing full well he wouldn't perform them as planned. He was too much in the moment to be constrained by a set list.

I recorded it with a microphone up to my TV's speaker onto a reel-to-reel when it was originally on, and have, over the years, copied that onto cassette and then digitized it later on. But the quality was terrible, it had an RF buzz throughout. Can't thank you enough. Good god, stereo, too.

I always loved Steve Goodman’s guitar playing. Not sure there’s a name for his style, but he sure could play. I remember seeing him in a little place in Cary (Harry Hope’s?).and he was laying a National steel guitar. Some drunk called out a request and threw a coin up to the stage, and it hit the guitar. It’s the only time I recall seeing Steve upset or angry. He was otherwise always so full of joy and life.
