Linda Cook John Cook commenting. I have a comment somewhere here. You saw Arlo two weeks ago? I saw him in 82 ~ approximately. I love Arlo Guthrie. Funnier than Jimmy Buffett. No, Arlo and Jimmy are different. Both funny Arlo Guthrie is storyteller and short songs. Check his fbi story.

Arlo: We went to Summer Music Camp together in 1962 in the Berkshires. What an incredible summer at a moment in history that you and I will always remember. I want to acknowledge the wonderful influence of your wonderful, talented, and loving mother -- Marjorie. We were just young teenagers. However it was a formative experience for all of us. It is wonderful how you developed into an artist. As you could remember you could hardly sing in those days. What a difference a few years made! Thank you for your music and work in reminding us all - as did your great father the basis of American democracy.

@@guthriesfirstson2630 I garden and love this song. My lady and I have seen Arlo in concert 4 or 5 times. The best was at the Woodstock (Illinois) Opera House. Just Arlo on stage sitting on a stool and his son playing keyboards. He always interrupted the songs with stories and we loved every minute of it. Once he wanted to tell s story rather than do a song and he said," I know I'm supposed to be singing but you can't always be doing what you're supposed to.". Brought huge applause. He also did City of New Orleans which is one of my all time favorites . Still one of the best concerts we have ever seen. Thank you Arlo!

Arlo touches of people who hate gardens. There are people who hate gardens. In 1976 my neighbor come over towards the fence. The first thing he said to me he hated people who had gardens. Guess what? The second week of July 1976 a stranger had come over to my residence. It was the town inspector. He stated that someone reported me for having a garden. He checked the garden and told me there was nothing wrong. I knew it was my neighbor who had a lot of time on his hands to report. The inspector had nothing else to do but to come over my place to check the condition of my garden. During those years I had to watch myself. This S.O.B. neighbor was also finding fault with other neighbors as well. It was not long after they moved. It was a blessing.

I saw him onstage right around this same time, and at that performance he got sidetracked by the lyric about the crow. "Crow's got his hungry eye on me.... How come he's not lookin' at what's in the garden?" And it led to a new verse explaining how crows knees are skinny and only bend one way, and that would be the best way to incapacitate a crow that tried to eat you.

I don't think this is the best recording of Garden Song. In general I would say that the one that made it onto Precious Friend is better. But Arlo's discussion on this one (despite being anti metric :-)) and the last verse makes it absolutely worth it. I think everyone has felt like that last verse, the first year or two they started gardening. Especially the first year they grew zucchini.

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down Digging frost, crushing stone, Gonna make this world our own Fertilize it with our bones, Put our life into the land Mirrors shine, comets fall, Mars awakens at our call Lots of work, but worth it all for a planet made by hand Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the snow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down Mars is dry, and awful cold, and the soil is awful old Superoxides won't unfold 'till you talk to them just right But we endure, we persist, old Mars just can't resist Life works like an alchemist with water, air and light Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down And the rain will fall on Mars, and the crops will grow, and Martians will gather and sing the old songs, and remember the people who created them, and the people who preserved them and carried them to new worlds, along with Earth's other seeds. Because Octavia Butler was right: It is the destiny of Earthlife to take root among the stars.
