I purchased this system 7 years ago and added 3 extra cameras to have 5 in total. All my cameras are in outdoor environments and 2 are solar powered. Yes this system was expensive but wow it's lasted. As I type here all my cameras are still working, still using the OG batteries and the solar panels are not showing any problems. It's performed incredibly well and honestly i'm going to struggle to find a replacement if that time comes. I still get free 7 days of cloud recording for 5 cameras and that's why I'm holding onto this system. The Arlo app has updated multiple times over the years and it is just magic to use to find captured video. So many times I've used video from my Arlo cameras in KZbin videos. Especially the night vision footage of Stray Cats, Drop Bears and Possums in the backyard. I'm a very hard marker when it comes to products like this but hell I'm giving my old Arlo 2 system top marks. One of the best security camera systems I have owned and it's still working fine.

My first wireless camera was a Ring Spotlight cam (wireless) which I returned due to connectivity issues. It would disconnect often, in spite of having installed a WiFi extender and it was a hassle to get it back on line. Not wanting to put up with that inconvenience I return it. Now I have five Arlo Pro 2 (thanks to this review!) and couldn't be happier! I have all the cameras wired. I simply didn't want to be changing batteries periodically. I'm getting a strong signal, even where I did not expect it. I am using a Netgear Nighthawk router and a TP-Link extender. The only reason I mention this is because I think it helps to get a strong, stable connection I believe that generally speaking one gets what one pays for. For instance, the outdoor power cable, as well as the indoor/outdoor mounts are extremely well made. Yes, you pay more for Arlo cams but I believe its worth it. For instance, if need technical assistance I don't want to send an e-mail and wait a week or more waiting for a reply. Arlo has 24/7 toll free assistance. Like most, I'm impressed with the quality of a camera's image but in doing an evaluation there are many other things that should be taken into consideration. I think LifeHackster has gone a long way to do that and these videos are not, and should not be, "info-mercials", unlike so many other channels. Subscribers are left to make the decision to buy the item or not. Hopefully this information will be of some use. Again, your mileage may vary. Thanks LifeHackster for producing these videos and providing information that is sound, unbiased and as comprehensive, and complete as time and format allow.

Thank You. I appreciate it. This is actually why I made this channel. There are a lot of tech reviewers out there that doesn't focus on the features and testing the features of the items that they review. By the way, could you let us know how many minutes could the battery-powered camera continuously record when a motion is triggered? After the recording stop, will it immediately start recording again when there is motion?

Yes... this actually annoys me.. for an expensive camera and they short change you with accessories. I am learning also that the base station is really a bad design...it is basically a WiFi router. @LifeHackster6 жыл бұрын
If you install it indoors, it will not pick up motion. Arlo or any battery powered WiFi cameras uses PIR sensor which detects heat and will not go through windows/glass. Also battery powered cameras are more susceptible to cold because of their batteries. My advice is an PoE NVR system or any wired camera indoors except at night because of the IR glare.

For the front door, I will choose the Arlo Pro 2 than the Blink. Blink's has a couple of limitations. One, is that it will not notify you until it finishes recording (depends on how long you set it up on the settings). Not really good for a front door camera which you need to be notified as soon as possible. Second, Blink doesn't have 2 way talk.

Hello! Love your videos, sir (I'm sure you're never tired of hearing that!) Very important question to me: I'd like to bypass the need to mount my front door walkway view camera super high up by installing the Arlo inside my house, just behind the glass window next to the front door. That way, when the batteries need charging, I can swap it out easily without pulling out a ladder. Do you see a problem with this set up? You can record with no monthly fees. They offer free cloud storage for 7 days (up to 5 cameras). You will not be able to use some of the "smart" features with out a monthly plan like custom activity zones or the advanced AI detection (tells the difference between people and vehicles). The batteries do not need to be replaced in the sense of purchasing new ones as they are rechargeable. How often you need to take them down to recharge will depend on your camera setup, video quality, and how many times a day they are triggered and record. I have two arlo cameras inside that are toggled off when I am home and only toggled on when I leave. These two cameras have gone 4+ months without needing to be recharged. Are you still using the Arlo Pro 2 cameras? Are there any other battery cameras that you would highly recommend over the Pro 2 that work well with Google Assistant?
@LifeHackster5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm still using it and they don't have any issues. I think Arlo is the only one that I know that works Ok with Google Home...kinda long to load up though.

Great review as always. While I agree that Arlo is expensive, I think the crown of being pricey still belongs to Nest. You may not have noticed but there have been some interesting deals for Arlo products over the last week: -Arlo Pro 2. 3 pack for $510 (Normal price $679) on Amazon -Arlo Pro. 2 pack for $265 on QVC I'm not sure if prices are falling due to competition or because they're getting ready to release another generation. I personally like Nest but can't justify the $350 price (yes for 1 camera) of their new outdoor camera.

LinuxZero you may be referring to the IQ outdoor camera. I got mu regular Nest Outdoor camera for approx 150 usd in Amzn
@linuxzero72836 жыл бұрын
Yes Footballer I was referencing the new IQ outdoor. I realize the first generation Nest outdoor cam can be bought for less especially when you buy in a bundle. However while it is a decent camera, it has some flaws that kill the deal. The worst one for me is not being able to effectively hide the power cable. The new IQ addresses that by making the cable detachable.
@footballer35246 жыл бұрын
LinuxZero I respect your opinion that NestOutdoor Camera is decent. Personally, I find it's video quality great at day and night. I agree with you about the flawed adapter which for me it was a no big deal because because I found a creative way around it. The fact of the matter is that if you want to have reliable recording when one will most needed it then Nest cameras are the way and the other motion recording cameras , well, they can be flawed too.
@LifeHackster6 жыл бұрын
Both Nest especially their "IQ cams" and Arlo are way expensive to what they are... Arlo is pretty good in short changing their customers for their camera kits... First, they only sell them in 2 camera packs minimum (Arlo Pro 2) also only giving one USB cable/power adapter for their 2-4 camera kits..in which they advertised that it can be plugged in...the video quality of the Arlos and also the Nest is pretty good though...

I bought a set of these and set them up outside and they ran fine through the rain and all for about a month or so. But one randomly shut off and claimed that the battery was dead which is strange since it was at around 80% before then, so I took it down, removed the battery and placed it back in and charged it. Ran again, however the picture quality is noticeably blurry compared to before. I wiped it all down and made sure it was good. The other camera went through the same conditions and is fine. Any similar experiences and or solutions? I also removed it from base station and resynced it again.
@LifeHackster6 жыл бұрын
Did water got in the camera? I haven't experienced that on my Pro 2's
@jessekaiman51826 жыл бұрын
@@LifeHackster I highly doubt it. It was less exposed then the other camera as well. I did find that the battery issue was due to it getting too cold. Which is strange since again it was in the same conditions. Saw a review of someone saying that their camera went out when it was fully charged and that after contacting support they were informed all they had to do was remove the battery and put it back in that they do that when they get too cold. It's working and recording with no censor fails but it does have lower quality then my other one which I can't understand. I've resynced it and made sure the lens was clean and inspected for any other signs of damage. Nothing. Not sure what the problem is but it happened after it got booted off so I assume it's something that can't be fixed by troubleshooting and is something internal sadly. That being said it's not terrible quality but the fact remains it's not what it should be and being in use for about 2 months I'm not too happy haha

LH,. I will pull the plug and buy the Arlo Pro 2 five camera bundle which it got even cheaper. I will test it out mostly for my backyard and side of the house. My question is,. How long does Arlo Pro 2 records if it detects motion. I remember the first Arlo Pro had the option to set setting up to 3 minutes I think, but recording time issue was not reliable. Also, does recording continue as long as there is recording without being stopped?
@LifeHackster6 жыл бұрын
The Arlo Pro 2 is pretty good in determining the length of time to record vs the Argus (Argus fixed it with firmware update - watch my Arlo Pro 2 Vs Argus 2 video this coming week) The range that I have for the Arlo is from 11 secs up to 1 minute and 22 secs.
@footballer35246 жыл бұрын
LifeHackster looking forward to it. I still believe Arlo is overpriced and/or overated, but I won't let the first Arlo experience prevent me from trying out the Arlo Pro 2 and making a decision if it's even worth it to keep it or not at the end. The Ring and Nest devices have me spoiled than to rely on snippets video. Thanks for your kind reply.

No, it also and should work when it battery powered. The benefit of plugging it in is the camera will record 3 seconds before the motion is triggered and you have an option to customize the motion zones.
