Ok, I won’t lie to you, by today’s standards, Ice Climbers sucks. I love the idea of the game but the controls are too dated to get any really enjoyment from it. HOWEVER! IMAGINE the possibilities a 3D Ice Climber game could have! Make it all about puzzle solving, and lots of unique mountains to climb up using only your admittedly impressive vertical jump and your ice climbing equipment. Maybe a bit of abusing the wildlife, with those puff ball things from the original remaking platforms and giving you extra height and polar bears doing their thing and pushing platforms down. And of course, your ice climbing partner. Make the whole game multiplayer and I think it could be really cool.

My one regret with this video is that I didn't give a shoutout to Splatoon for ticking a lot of relevant boxes in its singleplayer campaigns. Splatoon is somehow the closest we've come to getting a new 3D platformer in ages. EDIT: OKAY OKAY, I also probably should have talked a little about Sonic. Not Nintendo, but still a company consistently putting out games that you might consider 3D platformers. The focus on speed almost makes them feel like their own genre, so maybe that's why I didn't think to mention them? I don't know, would have been nice to talk about how even after DECADES the Sonic team still struggles with making Sonic work in 3D. But hey, that's KZbin vidjas, you never think of every possible point until you publish. Maybe the topic will come up again someday.

I think you've missed the biggest plus on this for Nintendo. Games cost a lot of money to make, but a lot of that comes from building a game engine. But engines can be reused, just look at how many games run on the quake engine. Mario 64, Ocarina of time, and Majoras Mask all ran on the same engine, and Majoras Mask was able to be made quickly and cheaply because they already had the engine customized for Zelda. Nintendo already have at least two great game engines for the Switch in the form of the engines for Zelda:BotW and Mario Odyssey, so repurposing those engines for a new game in the same style would save time and money, allowing them to make a great new game with the Nintendo quality and polish we expect on a reasonable budget in maybe less than 2 years from the start of development.

"Ok maybe not Ice Climbers" I'm gonna take that challenge! Imagine this, an online coop game where a bunch of players work together to go up a mountain. Say up to 8 players and 5 different mountains, each being taller and more difficult than the last. It would be cartoony, the Climbers looking like the Smash Ice imbers but with 8 different Climbers with different specialties, stats, and equipment. As you climb up there would be enemies you'd need to fight off as they try to take your allies down, running out of HP incapacitates a climber and the enemy tried to push them off the mountain, if all the Climbers are KOed or knocked off the mountain you lose. Camping would save your progress untill you can all get together to continue, as well as healing the party. The smallest mountain would take on average five minutes, but the tallest would take forever and only the best teams will reach the top, taking on average an hour and 30 minutes. TLDR: Ice Climbers could be a shorter online cooperative 3D platformer emphasizing teamwork and team synergy.
@ap3productions814 жыл бұрын
Dude, why stop there?! What if there was a two player story mode that focused on the Ice Climber's blood-bond and how even the toughest of challenges can be easier when someone you truly care about is always there for you. It'd be something different from what Nintendo's already putting out in any capacity, regardless of if it's 2D or 3D, and so long as the jump physics are solid (something that's a big flaw in the original Ice Climber game), I think it could be a fantastic and quite unique game.

Same here. I would actually really, really like a 3D platformer that involved two parties, primarily, instead of one (Mario, and sometimes Mario with Yoshi), primarily. Also, traversal that mostly is vertical would be very different (like the basis of Ice Climbers was back in the day), and the game could put a heavy emphasis on bonds and trust. It could be a very sweet (both in tone and in quality) game.

I would really like to see Splatoon single player go from puzzle-like stages to a full blown 3d adventure. The inking mechanic as a means of 3D traversal, both vertically and horizontally, is just so good. Even as cool as the Octo Expansion was, the short puzzle stages we have now in Splatoon's single player offerings are clever but really only offer the tip of the iceberg for the types of exploration we could be doing. I'd pay good money for that game, even if it had no multiplayer (since Splatoon 2 is already on the system). I also just really wish Kid Icarus Uprising became a full fledged series. It could really shine as a 3d rail shooter/platforming hybrid, if it were made on an HD platform. We would have to clone Sakurai or something to get the same jam-packed content laden game we got on the 3ds, but still. I feel a 3d Kirby is coming. It has been hinted by HAL that they were going to take Kirby in a very different direction after Star Allies. They've also tested the concept before, however brief, in Kirby 3D Rumble and Kirby Blowout Blast. Those are technically top down games, and so are not fully 3d, but it's a start.

@DYWYPI4 жыл бұрын
In my eyes, Splatoon is the perfect candidate. It's a series where a platformer spinoff isn't just "well, why why not?", but also provides Nintendo utility beyond simply having another game to sell - it provides the opportunity to develop the franchise. Splatoon is a huge hit of a franchise full of interesting lore and likeable characters and a colorful, engaging world, but as a primarily multiplayer shooter, there's only likely to be one game per system to develop any of those. It's as if Mario Kart was our only window into the world and characters of the Mushroom Kingdom. A 3D platformer would be *perfect*, giving its wonderful setting more room to breathe and also building on the amazingly fluid feeling of the platforming that sadly ends up squashed up in the main games between the competitive gunplay of the multiplayer and shorter, smaller levels of the main campaign. Just jumping between puddles as you spray and climb and run feels good in a way I don't remember since sliding around in SMS, but it's always over far too soon.

What appeals to me the most about 3D platformers was the element of exploration & freedom. You get to run & jump through fantastic worlds while looking in every corner. "How do I get over there? What's in there?" These were mysteries I loved to solve. The other appeal is how you stay within a big area & explore that multiple times instead of constantly having to move forward & progress. I hated when 2D platformers had time limits or prevented backtracking. The ticking timers exacerbated my anxiety. I just like to do things at my own pace, complete everything that can be completed.
@juanrodriguez99714 жыл бұрын
There are 2 sub genres of 3D platformers: Collect-a-thon: It's about collective items, the exploration it's important and the items you get are keys for guide and incentive the player for pass through a challenge, most of the time this genre has unlockable abilities like Banjo-Kazooie, and others doesn't need them like Mario Galaxy. Traditional point A to point B: It's the 3D Land and 3D World idea, both aren't about freedom or exploration, are about going from point A to point B, not the entire game has to be like this, just look at the haunted houses of Mario World, but the point here it's that, collectives and secrets are more like tools for incentive the player to replay the level with another perspective or taking different routes. But both share the same bases, an enjoyable to move character in a world with places to go and things to do where the point is doing them through a challenging world, things like enemies, combat system, RPG elements, aren't inherent to the formula.
@DeltathRiylaan4 жыл бұрын
I love the exploration and freedom, too. Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite game on the Switch because of this. I really agree with you about the idea of moving through the same area a lot, instead of just moving on. But always finding new little nooks and crannies is a great feeling. And I also love specifically with Odyssey though that as you progress through the game, the areas change some. Like how the desert is frozen over the first time you explore it, but then it opens up a bit more almost like a Metroidvania game after you beat the boss, then more again after you beat the game and smash the moon rock. It all really adds a ton of fun to that re-traversal.

I disagree. I feel like a LOT of this analysis is misguided. Specifically, it tends to believe in the idea of game “evolution” which does not exist. Were there a lot of platform games in the 90s? Sure. But Arlo leaves out the fact that most of them scored poorly and didn’t sell. This is the true nature of the games industry, which is not ‘evolution”. It’s prospecting for gold. One game “hits” and makes a lot of money. Immediately all other developers try to make games that resemble whatever the last “hit” was. Most of them sell very few copies. Meanwhile a new game “hits” and everyone rushes over there. This is prospecting for gold or gambling, not “evolution”. Guitar Hero/Rockband is the perfect example. Can you name ANY of the “me too” rhythm games that came out trying to get a little of that reflected glory? There were dozens and they sold extremely few copies. So when people try to suggest that the popular games of the time are popular because they are better... no. That’s nonsense. Games are a trendy industry. It’s no different than fashion and what game is popular is no different than what color shirt is “in” this season.

7:51 as an aspiring game developer I can tell you exactly why creating good controls are hard: realistic physics are not fun. The best example of this is Mario's jump, you obviously want him to respond immediately to a button press but you also need to be able to control the height of the jump. This essentially means for as long as you hold the jump button mario is being pushed upwards by a physics-defying force. This is only one of the more obvious tricks. Most are much more subtle like skipping frames of animation on impacts or slightly nudging the character to the platform. It doesn't make intuitive sense but when it is done right it feels perfect. Basically the only way to nail a movement system is endless trial and error. Edit: And the most important thing: the character must match the levels. It you try playing a banjo level as mario it may be possible but it won't be nearly as fun. That is because these games are made with a specific character's movement in mind.
@SpecterVonBaren4 жыл бұрын
One of the most important ones is that Mario can control himself in mid air. As annoying as it was, the original Castlevania games had realistic jumps, you jumped and all movement control was lost till you landed. Mario's jump feels so much better because you can move him even after his feet have left the ground.
@psychokinrazalon4 жыл бұрын
SpecterVonBaren I’m probably one of the few people who prefers Castlevania’s controls to Mario’s. The stiff movement and committal jumps make it easier for me to control.

There are two subjects at the heart of this, both of which I'd like to see expanded upon. A lot of this centers on Nintendo's handling of its lower-tier franchises. I've often thought about this and have a very similar mindset. I'd love to see them give more of their IP the treatment of Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. I appreciate 2D games and don't want to see them go away, but I do more thoroughly enjoy the deeper, more ambitious experience of Nintendo's 3D games. I love your pitch for 3D DK in particular. That's exactly what I've been hoping for from that franchise. I appreciate the comparison of DK 64 and Majora's Mask's sales, because I think both fans and Nintendo themselves have really bought into this idea of a hierarchy within their IP, as if there's an inherent limit to the potential of certain franchises. On the other side of things within this video is the exploration of the rise and fall of the platforming genre. While you make a point about how Nintendo can corner this market by being the only one doing this thing and doing it very well, I also think we should look at the broader picture of how platformers can make a bigger resurgence. I think platforming needs to evolve. The Mario template is great, but what else can this format give us? I think the Ratchet and Jak franchises were important evolutions of platforming that blended it more with the action and shooting genres. Hybrid platformers could really help to breathe new life into the genre. What about RPG/platformers? Platformers with more emphasis on puzzle-solving in conjunction with mobility to get to an objective? There are lots of untapped possibilities.

Their logic is probably like: Single game [First half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales [Second half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales Total : X Sales Two game s [First half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales of game 1 [Second half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales of game 2 + X/2 Sales of game 1 (Half of customers don't bother buying the first one) Total : 1.5X Sales The number of sales its higher than the single game model, *but not double* , and the problem is that *it does take double the resources* to make 2 games instead of 1, and I don't mean money resources but *creative resources* , they only have so many good ideas they can come up with for a 3D platformer, so they better don't spend all of those ideas on a single console-gen or else they'll get screwed on the next one. Not only that but they run the risk of *burning out the audience* , which already happened on the previous gen when they released 3DLand, NSMB2, NSMBU and 3DWorld all in the span of *2 years* , 2 of those are not even 3D platformers, and they still managed to make 3DWorld's release tiresome, so imagine what an actual barrage of 3D platformers would do to an audience. And not only that but releasing a new game kinda means *killing the chances to sell the previous game* to some people, so its probably more efficient to sell the 1 game as much as possible.

@Baumbartos yes. A 3D Kirby game would have to have 3D platforming with lots of floating, maybe even using inhalation to get around. There would be an air meter so it would be limited unless you get a certain powerup and go even higher. Enemies would allow you ot grab certain powers which can either kill more efficently or help get past obsticles and barriers, or both. Honestly making a 3D Kirby game is a no brainer. I think the reason Kirby stuck to 2D is entirely because of the SNES and Game Boy games. The formula was perfect and kept getting reused. Every Kirby game is essentially the same thing. I love them, but I'd be totally down with a full 3D game just because Kirby never gets the love he deserves. Same deal with Yoshi, except Croc already did it. Croc was originally planned as a 3D Yoshi game, but we got Yoshi's Story on N64 instead and Croc became a new IP on PS-One, albeit short lived.

I’ve been wanting a 3D Donkey Kong game for a long time. Donkey Kong is my favorite fictional character, so I’ve always wanted to see another 3-D game in the series. The levels in Donkey Kong country games are like no other, because they look like actual environments rather than just tiles and blocks, and I think some that’s something they could really capitalize on in a 3-D game. Tropical Freeze showcases some 3-D elements with the dynamic camera in the game end it looks beautiful! So it definitely can be done. For me, the levels in Donkey Kong country games give off a really good vibe that can’t be found in any other game. That’s why I really want to experience the donkey Kong universe in 3D so that the amazing vibe can be captured in a more expensive sense. Regarding the gameplay, I agree with what you proposed. The only thing I would add is to make the game just a little more fast paced, aka make it feel more like Donkey Kong Country. Because Donkey Kong 64 did feel a bit slow at times. And for the story, I’d have King K Rool not only return as the villain, but also reveal that he was secretly responsible for the events in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. Lord Fredrik already looks like King K Rool in disguise, so that could tie into the previous games very well. Awesome video!
@ChrisDavisStudio4 жыл бұрын
Same, love this idea, i've not seen any DK game, even tropical Freeze etc quite nail the atmosphere of the originals, they had such great environments, dark rainy storms, snow, lava, dark swamps etc, I loved the quality of the graphics in Mario Rabbids, if they could use an engine like that, it could look amazing.

Honestly, maybe I'm alone in this thought, but I was like 5 or 6 when I was first introduced to DK 64 and seeing the imagination and worlds and bosses blew my young mind. Every boss was introduced and you then saw they somehow get bigger cannons or doubled in size. Seeing the fear in the Kong's face made me scared and thinking "how on earth can I beat this!?" and then I would. Or how each Kong was unique and even when I was young, just by looking at them, I knew what their personality was like. I see that DK 64 is just a collectathon to most. But to me, no game was as influencial to my young developing mind than DK 64.

Nintendo should go back to their underappreciated franchises (F-zero, Star Fox, Punch Out, etc.) and put more time, effort, and money into making them better. Just like how FE Awakening breathed new life into the franchise, same should happen to those other Nintendo 1st party franchises. I'm tired of waiting so long.
@jackgarcia59264 жыл бұрын
Star fox can fuck off tough, they had a fresh chance with Zero and it was a mess. A franchise with a grand total of two good games in it's 20+ year history (one of which aged horribly) does not deserve this much leeway.

From what I've heard, Nintendo doesn't want to do anything with F-Zero because they don't have any new ideas good enough to justify a new game. Meanwhile they had no problem making the same New Super Mario Bros game over and over...

@Caio Coelho Considering that Nintendo delayed Animal Crossing to specifically avoid crunch, crunch is likely less of an issue. Of course, neither of us have the required knowledge to say whether crunch is an issue or not at Nintendo, so that point can't be argued by either of us. As for the money thing, take the franchises one at a time. Revive one, get bank from all the old fans and a nice batch of new fans, repeat process.

I would argue that Splatoon fills a certain roll in the 3D Platforming genre. The story mode and the Octo Expansion had incredibly dynamic and compelling 3D platforming elements. Of course, it's a shooter at it's core, but the platforming aspects of these story modes were phenomenal. I would for sure buy another Splatoon game that came packaged with a gigantic campaign mode.
@Stephen-Fox4 жыл бұрын
As ridiculous as the idea of reviving Ice Climbers sounds, it would be the perfect franchise to see Nintendo's take on the Walking Sim. You start by choosing to play as either Nana or Popo and, with the other climber go on a trek up a mountain, getting a story personal to the climbers on your way, while going slightly off the beaten path allows you to find artifacts and evidence of previous climbers, getting their stories along the way via diaries and environmental storytelling, all the while exploring a beautifully rendered mountain environment in whatever gorgeous art style Nintendo decided would work best for it as you approach the summit. And with a companion character on your journey, that opens up the possibility of dialogue choices, and with that, potentially a branching narrative.

Their logic is probably like: Single game [First half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales [Second half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales Total : X Sales Two game s [First half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales of game 1 [Second half of console lifespan] : X/2 Sales of game 2 + X/2 Sales of game 1 (Half of customers don't bother buying the first one) Total : 1.5X Sales The number of sales its higher than the single game model, but not double , and the problem is that it does take double the resources to make 2 games instead of 1, and I don't mean money resources but creative resources , they only have so many good ideas they can come up with for a 3D platformer, so they better don't spend all of those ideas on a single console-gen or else they'll get screwed on the next one. Not only that but they run the risk of burning out the audience , which already happened on the previous gen when they released 3DLand, NSMB2, NSMBU and 3DWorld all in the span of 2 years , 2 of those are not even 3D platformers, and they still managed to make 3DWorld's release tiresome, so imagine what an actual barrage of 3D platformers would do to an audience. And not only that but releasing a new game kinda means killing the chances to sell the previous game to some people, so its probably more efficient to sell the 1 game as much as possible.

Watching this video now Arlo and so far 2 things on my mind: 1. When it comes to 3D platformers...what about Sonic the Hedgehog? Yes many of his 3D adventures after Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast have been medrocre to really lousy but Sonic had some tries too. Also, here's another 2 ideas for 2 game that if built right could have 3D platforming as a major feature in the title: Kid Icarus and StarTropics. Both of these if the ideas were good and sound with a good 3D platforming element could be really good too. My nickel and until next time I am out!
@EmileeAria4134 жыл бұрын
NeoFlite23 Quality aside, Sonic hasn’t been a 3D platformers since Unleashed (unless you count Sonic Boom but we don’t talk about that game). The boost formula games are not 3D platformers, and they’re barely 3D. Even Crash Bandicoot despite having linear levels that went along the Z axis or the X axis like with Sonic was more of a 3D platformer. Boost formula styled levels are less about precision platforming and more about navigating obstacles to maintain speed.

It’s my dream to make a really snappy, fast-paced 3D platformer, and the sheer lack of games in a genre I love really hurts. I don’t know why Kirby hasn’t made the transition to 3D yet. When it comes to the next 3D Mario game, I just want to see an Mario Odyssey 2. I said this before & I'll say it again, I want to see Nintendo build upon & expand on Odyssey's gameplay & ideas. There are so many things they can do with Odyssey 2's gameplay mechanics & ideas. The amount of new enemies & creatures Mario can possess, the amount of new artstyles the game can experiment with, the amount of different worlds they can create instead of the typical grass, desert, snow, jungle & beach world trope etc. & have Luigi be playable. Not to mention Odyssey 2 is the perfect chance to fix & improve all the issues that some people had with the original Odyssey's gameplay, most noticeably increasing the game's difficulty a bit. I love Odyssey to death, but I can't deny that Odyssey 1 was way too easy with little to no challenge. It's by far the biggest complaint I've heard about the game & that is the one aspect Nintendo should really fix with the sequel.
