Thank you, Armin!I Ive already watched many of your videos and Today I have shot my first 20 arrows using thumb release. I wanted to try a week ago, but it was soooo akward and quite painful , so I tried slavic release instead just to get it started and use to the arrow being on the other side.

Hello Armin, I have been enjoying your channel. I'm currently not an archer, but like a great many people, I have a lot of interest in it and would like to start up sometime soon. I really appreciate this particular video, as there are SO MANY different kinds of bows. As for myself, the type of archery I would enjoy (or my reason for wanting to learn) is as a form of self improvement and discipline, and a kind of moving meditation (if that makes sense). I'm not a hunter, so by default I would be shooting at some form of target. But again, primarily as a form of continual growth and increasing skill. As I progress, I may enter some form of friendly competition-not to win trophies, but rather to test myself against others and, more importantly, develop a form of camaraderie with others who enjoy the same pastime, and where we can share knowledge and learn from one another. With this self improvement and self challenge in mind, I would probably like to eventually shoot from both sides. But this brings me to a question (as I'll have to begin somewhere): I am right handed, so my instinct tells me to hold the bow with my left hand and handle the arrows with my right. However, I'm left eye dominant. This hasn't been an issue with pistol shooting, but it's a bit more of an issue with a rifle. From your experience, how would someone who is right handed, but left eye dominant typically shoot? Right handed or left? Sorry this is so long. Walt

I will try both of these draws in my next shooting session. The Slavic looks like it might be amenable to rapid firing, while the "Persian" (?) looks very comfortable.

Really good video, as usual. The absolute truth is (for me 😸😸) : have fun, work hard and don't shoot a too heavy draw weight. When I came in my club 3 weeks ago with a #30 recurve bow, I eared sentence like : "oh, a lady bow, real guys shoot #45 or harder". 😢 Not really cool to ear... but when I asked to try to stay at our anchor point for 10 seconds, I was the only one to do it.

Armin, interesting narrative and informative, as ever. Personally, I own a traditional English longbow; self and laminated flat bows; modern recurve and a compound bow. Currently I'm enamoured with my Asiatic bows and would like to increase my collection in this regard. I'm looking to retire soon and hope to obtain a plot of land where I can spin out my dotage shooting all my beautiful bows. My draw weight is a constant 29" and have yet to try 'thumb draw'. Perhaps this will be a new challenge. Anyway, good Sir, keep up the good work. Your channell is my favourite concerning 'traditional' bows and the way of the archer. Flaxen Saxon

I have been trying to learn as much as I can about shooting with a thumb draw and have watched quite a bit of your videos. Thank you so much for them. But my thirsty mind wants so much more information and it's hard to find. I have a LOT of questions, but I guess the most important one is what is the differences in performance between the different horsebow styles. You say we should decide which design we prefer, but I don't have anywhere near me to try out the different horsebow styles. -_- help please.

There are a few neat options for short longbows that handle long draw lengths. They utilize radically short risers, which sacrifices sight window. Check out Big Jim's Thunderchild. The 58" version handles a 32"+ draw without stack. My 64" Black Widow recurve draws very smooth to 32", but it breaks the bank. Generally with recurves and longbows the smoothness of their draw at long draw lengths is directly related to their quality (price). They will never match the smoothness of something like a Manchu bow, however.
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 6 жыл бұрын
hehe yes I shot once a Black Widow and then against the owner with his famous bow... well he was complaining about the wind when he lost :D but nice bows.
@blake436
@blake436 6 жыл бұрын
Ha. The bow definitely does not make the archer. Most of my recurves come from the 60s. Wings are amazing vintage bows. One of the most refreshing things about having gotten into horsebows is how affordable they are. Custom western bows are so expensive. Top of the line Mariners, which I'd compare to something like a Widow in quality, are 1/3 the price, and entry horsebows like some of the ones from Alibow are amazingly cheap for their quality. Salukis, however...
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer 6 жыл бұрын
Vintage, yeah.. I had a Wings Mongole Recurve (not mongolian style hahaha) was an amazing bow. Think it still exists, but I left it in Germany. Prices are really good on the bows and quality is great now too, from all of them. Yes and of course ONE DAY I might own a Saluki hahaha. But on the other side, I had loads of fun with a 300 bro bow, not sure if the Saluki is 4 times more fun, as the price is 4 times higher hehehe

I stumbled across your channel while looking for a Scythian bow manufacturer in South Africa. Your simple. no-frills style got me hooked. A few questions from my side: What draw weight would you recommend for a hunting bow for most African plains game. None of the big stuff for now. My 2-finger draw length is 29". What do I choose for a thumb release ... about 31"? Is it possible/practical to put a bow fishing rig on a Eastern style bow?

My problem is I shoot left handed (haven't been able to train myself to shoot right handed at this point), am tall and have a 31-32 inch draw with a compound bow, and am not as strong as I used to be but want to be able to hunt this year as well as target shooting and bow fishing. This is compounded by the very limited budget I am forced to stay within.

That was a really useful video, thank you. Do you have a video anywhere that explains arrows for beginners? I hear 350,400, 500 etc and grains etc but honestly I don't really understand them! Maybe you can point me to a resource that explains it simply? I have bought a snake bow following your recommendation that it is a good starter bow and as both my wife and I will be using it and she is right handed and I am left handed it seemed like a reasonable sharing bow for the garden (we have a large garden here in France). Now we need to understand what are the best arrows for it and why. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Tony

Cause I like short bows. And if you pull on hold the bow like in one of the screens in the film, can the arrow go through two targets that are close together or is that just movie magic?

if you already have a conventional take down recurve with a shelf on the left, what about getting a left handed riser for thumb draw? (especially for an Ottoman release where the draw length is the same)

sure possible, or you learn thumb release left handed... most takedown bows have kind of pistol shape grip, which makes it a bit weird to hold in the "wrong" hand. But of course it is possible

I'm 5.57ft; 63kg. My favorite type bow is horse bow with style is mamluk (thumb draw/ release) style. I had 2 bows, recurve - take down and mongolian local production (Indonesia). My Mongolian is nice. But it still not compromise me. I need the perfect bow for me. I need for hunting but suitable for competition and of course lifetime. So it needs a high speed & very responsive bow, high accuracy, less handshock, powerful and robust. Does anyone could advice me, which horse bow the most perfect for me, please???

I am keenly interested in your review of Alibow's bamboo arrows. Is 92 cm & 560 gn bamboo the right length & weight for their Manchu bow? You have definitely talked me into the challenge of their Manchu.

Why isn't it necessary to use a nocking point when using the thumb ring?
@dongleseon8785
@dongleseon8785 6 жыл бұрын
It's also unnecessary if you use other draw finger. It's just personal preference as far as you have solid nocking place in your mind.
@timothym9398

The short answer is that when you aren't using a shelf and "shooting off the hand" your relative "arrow rest" to string nocking point will be a bit different every time anyway so it doesn't really make as much sense to make certain you're nocking at the same point. Shooting off of the hand is inherently a bit inconsistent so one need to kind of "feel" what is appropriate on any given shot.

I have always used a nock point even when shooting off the hand. Grew up shooting wooden longbows like that. It's important for the limbs to be timed correctly and not hit the hand on the way out. Historical sources don't necessarily mention nocking points BUT they place extreme stress on the importance of consistent arrow placement on the string. Consistent bow hand position when shooting off the hand is actually very easy if you just have a leather grip or even a simple mark on the handle for reference. So I honestly have to disagree with the notion that there always is inconsistency, so why bother trying to improve by using a nock point. No excuses: every bow is sensitive to limb timing, no matter the release method. And it's not like you actually gain a thing by omitting a nock point.

have you ever used bows from The cinnabar bow? If so, how did they compare to ali bow? I am looking to start with traditional archery (I currently shoot a recurve).

Hi Brent. Of course, just recently I did a comparison of 3 manchu bows. And a while ago a did a specific review of tow bows from Mariner. Simply check my channel. Two things to consider: 1. waiting time, I had to wait almost one year to get my bows 2. price. Performance I would say they are almost equal, maybe a tad to mariner bows. Cinnabar offers spearman bows too, but I never shot them

I am so dissapointed, i am Looking for a super stiff and still wobbly piece of at least 100lbs of hand shock, that actually requires a prayer to not break my back. And since i shoot indoor, and my wife often gets in the way, i shoot rubber arrows. This is clearly the wrong channel for me.
