My Dad was 16 when he fought in Burma. WW2 whilst there he had malaria 3 times . He didn’t die in action but he suffered all his life with bullet jammed near his heart and emphysema due to malaria. He died when I was 6 and he was 45. He didn’t see his children grow up and never met his Grandchildren. He was very brave . My Mum became a young widow at 40 with 4 children . She couldn’t have a war widows pension because he didn’t die in action even though he suffered all those years and died an early death because of the war and he suffered with PTSD all his short life.

Once he got to the end of this village road he was joined by 5 more men (non soldiers) who said they would also volunteer. 300 thousand panjabis made up the first wave of men. There were 10 waves of men during the entire length of WW1. During the first 6 months of WW1 (prior to British male conscription) it was the Panjabi muslims/Sikhs who held it down in the western front, having dug 65KM of that line themselves, manned it, went over the top and ran towards incoming German rounds. Ps: those men did not have to contribute, they were not forced to, they answered the call for help raised by king george V. They responded by saying yes we will help.
