I find this music beautiful, but I definitely don't understand it. I guess I would have to understand his compositional techniques and influences more.

Listen to Debussy and Messiaen if you don't already. Takemitsu called Messiaen his "spiritual mentor." Takemitsu was fascinated by tone color and was exceptional at presenting it.

just listen it a bunch. it'll takes some time for modern music to settle in the brain, but you don't need to have an advanced understanding of music to get it. The more you listen to it the more you'll be able to perceive it in a meaningful way.

Sorry this is a late reply. I heard somewhere that silence, or the spaces between phrases, are of equal importance as the notes themselves. Therefore I think a good way of approaching this music would be to let the individual phrases just come and go in your mind's ear, as if you were meditating. There is room for deeper analysis, however.

There is nothing to understand for you. Why strain yourself with trying to find meaning in it? Just let it move you, if it does, good, if it doesn't, listen to something else. Modern music many times is forced on to a pedestal, and no one can explain to you why is there. Because the people surrounding modern music are many times pretentious and believe this music puts them on a higher level than everyone else. When in reality a lot of the music is just bad and you will not want to listen to it more than one time, if you can even accomplish one full listen.
