Armored trains are nothing new, but you've probably never seen a bulletproof hi-rail truck! This specialized Lenco BearCat is used by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's Police Department and can respond to situations on the tracks.

They should make those police hi-rail trucks to stop looters from stealing from intermodal container and semi trailers
@MrAwesomedude808
@MrAwesomedude808 Жыл бұрын
Impractical. You’d need to keep up with the train and even if you could, you’d need to work between rail traffic. Plus the containers and trailers are not always going to be at the end of the train especially if they are being broken into. If it’s happening in a rail yard and or while the train is static, a regular police car will respond faster. Remember: you have to be at a crossing or on another surface in order to deploy the hi-rail wheels, these vehicles (unlike rail car movers which are smaller) have to be somewhere where the rails sit flush with the surface.

The idea of an armored vehicle with hi-rail equipment is imo quite strange. I mean theres obviously the very small chance of perhaps a terror attack or something on a rail line but Id suspect the money wouldve been better spent on something more akin to a vehicle with firefighting apparatus or evacuation space. But Im no expert on the topic, and if theyre already getting trucks like those theres no harm in making them hi-rail equipped I suppose
@trainzguy2472
@trainzguy2472 2 жыл бұрын
There's actually been quite a few terror attacks in metro stations around the world. I don't know of any in the US but 2 that stand out to me happened in Tokyo and London. I suppose it's only a matter of time before such an attack strikes a system in the US. I could see it being useful in a hostage situation where the assailants have blocked off the surface entrances to an underground station and trapped passengers inside. Thant said, I'm really not sure why they went with a full SWAT truck instead of a van or pickup. I guess they really do plan for the nightmare scenario.

@@trainzguy2472 Right, but the actual attacks you're describing were a poison gas attack and a series of suicide bombings. An armoured personnel carrier is completely useless in both of those situations.

@@markbass7145 Yes, they will build and sell them to military, but the primary design mission is for civilian law enforcement. From the same source you quoted: "BearCats are typically referred to by law enforcement agencies as being "armored rescue vehicles"[16] with their primary use being to transport tactical (SWAT/Special Reaction Teams) officers to and from hostile situations and to assist with the recovery and protection of civilians in harm's way during terrorist threats, hostage incidents, or encounters with large gatherings of aggressors." The article goes on the cite numerous high profile incidents where these deployed with criminals shooting at officers with high powered weapons and mass shootings where they were used to rescue citizens and hostages.

I’m curious on what kind of rail permit is required for emergency situations. Most railroad track cars travel under special permits thru dispatchers. Curious if a rail Forman qualified on that territory reports with that SORT team or if they are allowed to just put on the tracks and roll with just a “police hold” per the dispatcher. Great video.
