I took an Army ROTC scholarship in the middle 1970s and dis five years active and 25 in the reserves. It helped me pay for college and the GI bill helped in graduate school. I am not past age 60 and am now "retired military." The extra $ helps but it is not enough to live off by itself. By the by: In 1976 ROTC summer camp they acted like repelling was a big deal. I never mentioned that I had done it all before off rock cliffs at Philmount Boy Scout camp at age 14. BFD.

Got back from CST recently. Got voluntold to for my PLT to go up there as bus drivers to Trans the cadets around. I'm not exaggerating what I say because I experienced it along with my fellow squad mates, these cadets were extremely unprofessional in some instances. Anything from asking if the AC works or if the bus has music. I would say no It doesn't work and they would cough up the worst attitude about it. Or they would ask me if I had a CDL and I'd say no because we're all infantry MOS and they would get upset about that. Not only that but they also had no sense of urgency. They didn't know how to setup their rucks or even know how to get on the bus, we would have to help them. But most of the time they just had no idea what they were doing or where they were going. Worst experience in my entire military career by far and I hope I never have to go through that again.

ROTC is one thing, but I've always wondered what kind of leadership instruction West Point's future Ring Knockers actually got. The ones I was exposed to must have internalized some class entitled "You Are The Next, Glorious Embodiment of General Patton". One "cadot" at our unit over our summer FTX tried to play the Patton role to a bunch of battle hardened Infantrymen, and one day, I got a front row seat to watch my Platoon Sergeant verbally light this kid up! It actually helped this kid's demeaner and he learned 'tis better to listen to your NCOs than to try and lord over them! 😅

Allow me to give you a breakdown of the army. You go through basic training, which sucks, and lasts a long time. But you make it out alive (at least, some of you do), and suddenly you get that rush of excitement. You did it! With a smile on your face, you are shipped to your first duty station. You get there and, for the most part, are treated like shit just for existing (unless you are female, in which case you are treated like royalty). No big deal, it’s just hazing. They’ll probably have you do some embarrassing stuff and maybe jump you a few times. But it’s survivable. The first few months are like this. You’ll notice that the work day mostly consists of sitting around and waiting. Waiting for what? Well, my friends, that’s the mystery. Nobody knows what you are waiting for. You just wait. And you better wait in a hurry, too. After the first few months, you begin to visit the PX liquor aisles a little more frequently…nothing better than a nice swig of cheap vodka after a long day of waiting around and getting b*tched at by a depressed SSG. You’ll soon reach full blown alcoholic stage….this will last forever. Seriously, there will be no end. At some point, however, the alcohol alone will no longer do it for you. You’ll go to a barracks party one night, and notice people frequently visiting the bathroom. What could they be doing, you wonder? You eventually venture in yourself, and discover the fine white powder residue next to the sink. Hmm, you wonder, that couldn’t possibly be what I think it is. OH, BUT IT IS! Finally, now that you’ve proven yourself, you are offered to partake in the devil’s snow. You agree. Congrats, you will soon be hooked on the stuff. You’ll find that the barracks are FULL of fun treats that take you to distant worlds. Don’t worry about drug tests; usually the medics are in on it and will do you a solid. A year and a half in. Your legs hurt. Your back hurts. You’re always angry. You’ve married a stripper named Nevaeh, with Chinese characters running down her back. You only did it for the money, though. You are essentially stuck in this weird limbo for the next year or two, hating your life and rethinking every decision you’ve ever made. Your NCO’s want you to become an E-5, but you just don’t care enough to put in the effort. Finally, the time comes to make the decision. To re-enlist, or not to? You’ve decided you hate the army, but to be honest it’s really all you know. It has, in a way, become a comfortable prison cell. You just don’t FEEL like leaving. And your *open* relationship with Nevaeh is working just fine. You give her a little green every month, and you both just do what you want while enjoying the perks of living off base. You cave. You sign the dotted line, yet again. It’s over for you now. The army has you in its jaws. You go home that night and draw yourself a nice bath by filling the tub with every bottle of alcohol you can find. The rest of the tub is filled with your tears. You don’t remember passing out, but suddenly an alarm goes off. You look at your phone. 5 AM. Once again, it’s time for hell. You throw up once or twice, down a few naproxen, and put on those awful PTs. You realize that, for the next 3 years, this is all you’ll know.
