What It Takes To Survive The Marines' 54-Hour Final Test | Boot Camp | Business Insider

Before they officially become United States Marines, all recruits must endure "The Crucible," an event that tests them physically and psychologically for 54 straight hours with minimal sleep and food. Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, embedded with the gender-integrated Hotel Company during its Crucible event.
Among the recruits were a brother and sister both experiencing the event together. Recruits hike for miles in the cold darkness wearing about 50 pounds of gear, face off in hand-to-hand combat inside the "Octagon," experience intense combat scenarios, and work together to overcome obstacles that test their bodies and minds. The event culminates with the emotional Eagle, Globe, and Anchor Ceremony, where the recruits receive a pendant that symbolizes their official transformation into United States Marines.

To answer the title, "What It Takes To Survive The Marines' 54-hour Final Test" is to keep remembering there is an end, you gotta make it through, there is an end, you gotta make it through. Even climbing Mount Everest is just one foot in front of the other a bunch of times until you're at the top (oversimplified, but you get the idea). As long as I could just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and accept that this will be physically and mentally uncomfortable, I will get through it and it will be over eventually. This thought has been with me ever since. I went in 2005 and now I am a teacher and disabled veteran. On my hardest days, I still tell myself that each day has its end, I can get through it, just keep marching forward.

My uncle was in the Vietnam war, his job was to run out open to check for enemies, he even suffered a grenade explosion during his sleep, and yet through all that he survived and I have massive respect for him. His story is one of my inspirations to join infantry

I remember my parris island drill instructor had a newborn he didnt get to see, so he was very angry and would literally have aneurysms. He made me walk around the table with my food for 3 days until everyone was done so I couldn't eat and would regularly sucker punch me in the gut if i made eye contact or did anything out of line. After 3 days I fell in the chow hall and started crying, completely broken. It was horrible and I finally got to eat but that's what it took to get the last of the child out of me and I really respect these guys for giving up so many other parts of their lives to train warriors. It's really selfless. I'd like to think they helped me survive afghan.

This does no justice to how fast you have to move. We didn’t have time to talk except for chow. It was back to back events. This doesn’t show them all but you get so tired it’s crazy. If you go infantry the follow on school is another 3 months of field shit like this. If you go to any supporting job you’ll go to mct. Which I’m my case is literally like a college campus. Whatever you do you it with heart. Put out, and you’ll be fine. They notice and you’ll get fucked up a whole lot less.

The hardest part about the crucible for me was the log drills. Absolutely broke me because I was used to carrying my own weight instead of something heavy. My DI was brutal with it too, we had to do 25 reps and every single mistake he caught would bring us back to 0 and sometimes -10.

Being in the military really makes you appreciative and grateful for everything. Just like at the end with finally getting good food after 12 weeks. So many people are starving in this world by just being human and existing. Many people in this world have nothing. I went through boot camp in 2008, and back then we only got 3 MRE's for the 3 days of the Crucible. It's great to see younger men and women making it through with the same kind of motivation we had back then.

For the female recruits, not only did we get little in the way of food, but we also had to give our Drill Instructors all the "candy" stuff that was in an MRE. Some of the MREs had M&M's or Skittles, and we had to give that to the Drill Instructors because "it'll make you fat, and fatties don't graduate boot camp." They pulled this a lot on us, I don't know if they were supposed to but they did.

I've decided recently that I want to be a Marine. The idea has played around in my head for years but I was always talked out of it by my family because I had a brain. It's a huge misconception that because you're "smart" you're better than the military. THAT IS THE BIGGEST LIE I'VE BEEN TOLD. I'm 24, I wasted the last 12 years of my life playing video games, going to school and missing out on crucial life experiences that the military WILL provide to anyone who wants to join. The group punishment thing, however unfair, is actually highly effective. At first it may cause division amongst those performing well and those not. But after a while it tends to settle into a “it’s all of us, together” mentality. A one of unconditional support. In that one regard you lose tour individuality and become a a symbiotic colony of people who live, breath, train, and work together. It’s one of the most unifying things.

In case some of you don’t know, the breakfast after the crucible is the first time they get to eat freely with both their hands. Before that, you kept the right hand on your knee at all times and used the left one to eat. You cannot look up for anything other than your plate. It takes guts. Not everyone makes it all the way through. Most do, since you've already been doing these things individually in your 11 weeks prior to the crucible. But it takes all of your effort, all the time. You'll be exhausted within your first few hours of the crucible. But you'll have 50 more to go. It really separates the guys who only have the goal of becoming a United States Marine from the guys who only want this to be over with.

No matter how much you see in the videos - nothing can really explain to people how hard it is until you go through it. And I am talking the ENTIRE boot camp experience. It is f'ing tough. Tougher mentally than physically. When I went through boot camp I saw guys that if you saw them on the streets you would NEVER want to eff with them - literally break down at times because of how tough it was. A lot of respect for anyone that goes through 90 days of this shit. It is not easy at all.

@@chumpylumpy8072 yes, get as physically fit as you possible can. I mean REALLY fit. That will make it easier for you to get through the physical part. The physical part is not easy, but it is the mental part that is the big difference. Learn all you can about the General Orders. Learn how to salute properly. Learn as much as you can BEFORE you go in, it will make things easier. But in the end run it is going to be tough no matter how prepared you are. Also, if you don't know how to swim - learn how to swim NOW. Really learn how to swim and be comfortable in the water. Even though Marine Corps water survival in boot camp is NOT nearly as tough as it could be - learning to swim well will make that part a lot easier. I saw numerous guys nearly drown. The swim coaches, at least when I was in, would let you struggle and struggle to the point you would think they were going to let you drown. That is not fun.

I went through all that, and it sucked! I was the one that carried my team for the crucible. And on the IED sweep, someone called freeze as I was still looking around for what could possibly be an IED. One of my DIs caught me still moving because I didn’t see the “freeze” and so he ran up to me and said, “you’re dead! Now carry him”. Which made the crucible suck for me, but on the parade deck (Pete Ross) that same DI came up to me and gave me my EGA and said something along the lines of “those tears you’re crying, is you realizing how much you pushed yourself to be a better you.” And so I still feel pride from what he told me and plan to honor his name, even after the hell he put me through.

You have to be able to get to the shooting position first. Takes strength to get there first and arrive with enough wind to precisely make the shot. Strength and endurance matter quite a bit. Not that marksmanship should be neglected, but it’s definitely not an end all. I was a machine gunner in Afghanistan. Went into a building that had already been cleared to set up supporting overwatch only to find a sonofabitch laying in wait in the corner of the first room. It wasn’t my rifle or my marksmanship that killed him. It was the strength of my mitts and the heel of boot. It wasn’t marksmanship that carried the casualties to the medical either. Strength was needed to cart all the ammo and ordinance for that marksmanship too. Strength is very important.

I went to boot camp in October of 1997. The crucible was still a new thing and had been started by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Krulak a few months before I got there. When my platoon went through it we were still on of the first groups to do it. Everyone was nervous about it and it seemed like an impossible task based on the rumors. At the time it was extremely hard, and after completion when we were at the ceremony where we received our Eagle, Globe, and Anchor pin and were finally referred to as Marines instead of recruits ( or much worse ) that was the proudest I had ever been up to that point in my life. However, I would go on to serve in the infantry as a 0331 machine gunner. Compared to the training and real world missions I did once I was in the actual fleet the Crucible seemed simple looking back.

Respect to Marines your boot camp is the hardest. I am in the Army and our culminating final event of BCT, the forge, is 96 hours. On the first night we ruck out to the night fire range, shoot and get cleared off the range, then ruck to the first biovouc site. The next day is practicing tactical move and shoot movements on bunkers with paint rounds, flanking, react to fire. There's also medical training (tourniquets, bandages, nine line call in, etc.) Then another ruck to the next biovouc site. Then there's the night Infiltration course, another day of practical knowledge tests, and then the final 10 mile ruckmarch on the last night. I'd say over the 96 hours I probably got about 14 hours of sleep and we had one mre per day. To be fair the last afternoon we had to rest and stay in our patrol base at the final biovouc site, no sleeping of course but it was rest.
