That citizen was the first watch that I bought a few years ago when I rediscovered my interest in watches. Initially I put on an olive rubber strap similar to the orange one in this video, but eventually switched out to an oyster style bracelet and that's how it remains today. Even with other watches in my rotation, this one still gets a ton of wrist time and is still one of the best looking watches out there in this style. Absolutely love it. Clean, crisp, light (even with the bracelet), and a great everyday watch for all situations.

I own both Seiko automatics and Citizen Eco-Drives, but I have to say that the Citizen watches are more practical. Never have to worry about servicing or changing a battery, and if the capacitor ever wears out, Citizen will replace it.

Correct. I have my seiko5 snk809 for two years and it stopped and required service maintenance which is expensive. Citizen ecodrive is indeed practical choice.

I have an Evo drive Skyhawks Blue angels edition that I purchased in August of 2004 and it will still charge up fully according to its battery indicator. When I was in the Marine Corp I was issued a Hamilton--which was the original "green strap" watch; that was THIN. Where can I get one for sentimental/collector purposes? I carried 3 heavy-assed radios, including one fm: I coordinated and controlled the various firing firing agencies involved in SEAD missions with nothing but the second-hand sweep and my brain housing group. Suppressing fire from arty/mortars to suppress anti-air with a lume round on the deck to mark the target, suppression stops, dash one does a pop-up maneuver and then announces "wings level," then drops. Dash two did the same, and then suppression from a different firing agency would resume suppression. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Hey Nutn. SSC293 Seiko. Land one and you'll love it. Basically the same as the one reviewed, but comes with chrono, alarm, higher quality nylon strap, and a rotating compass bezel thingy that will never be used. I have to say, watching your first watch video pushed me over the edge to get a nice watch. I've always ran 30$ digital timex watches. Love them, but wanted something fancier. Really wanted a field watch and almost got a Seiko 5 SNK809 (B style dial) but decided I wanted something fancier. Started looking at the 300-400$ seiko dress watches and really liked what I saw but eventually purchased a used Seiko SARG009. I fell in love with this field watch! Someday I'll get a dress watch, but my heart went to the field watch first! Sapphire crystal, domed crystal, hand wind plus automatic movement, hacking function, classy look... this watch *does it* for me.

I bought my first Seiko self- winding watch in 1972 while in navy boot camp in San Diego. I knew nothing about Seikos but bought it because it was strikingly beautiful and apparently someone else thought it was beautiful too as it was stolen while in the pocket of my foul weather jacket. Bought another Seiko self-winding chronograph. Sold it a few years later to buy another, fancier Seiko chronograph and bought another since then. The last two were quartz movement and all but the very first were black face with stainless steel bracelets. All had thick, rotating bezels which, I think, rounds out the rugged look. My latest watch purchase was a Bulova with Citizen movement, same style. Very nice!

I'm not much of a watch connoisseur but I have a couple I like. I have a Momentum Titanium Pathfinder and a G Shock GW 4000-1A Aviation. The latter is solar powered and automatic, both great features. One thing I cannot recommend enough if it is an option, is to get your watch with a sapphire crystal. I have worn the Momentum for years, daily HARD outdoor use and you cannot find the slightest scratch on the crystal. Even if you scrutinize holding it up to oblique light. My newer G Shock I have worn for about two years is still running fine but beat to hell.

I bought the Seiko SNE095P2 and absolutely find it an awesome watch for less than 100 bucks! I have several expensive watches and end up wearing this one more than the others. I like the big numbers at 12, 6, 9 and the way it illuminates at night... makes it easier to see, especially for someone that uses reading glasses. The band it comes with is ok , but I will most likely change it soon. As far as keeping accurate time... I give it an A+... spot on! Give it a try... for less than 100$ it's a great watch.

Never had an issue with a Seiko band fraying. I used my SNK 805 as an EDC for over a year, I wore it to work and got it wet and full of polish and dirt almost everyday. It always cleaned up nice and looked perfect afterwards. My current "work watch" is a Casio G-Shock DW9052 which after three months of everyday wear at my job does show signs of use. It's nothing bad just light scuffs and such but compared to the Seiko it's something worth mentioning. The Seiko was dropped once and bumped allot. It has nothing to show for it.

Great to see a review on both these watches. Being ex British Military myself I was looking for a military field watch. The first watch I bought was the Citizen watch you have reviewed on. I have had the watch over 6 years now and it is an incredible watch for the price. It is now on its second strap. I replaced it with a black leather strap with red stitching to match the sweep hand and it complimented it entirely. I purchased the Seiko watch you have reviewed about 2 years ago nearly and have to agree with you on your review about the strap, it started to fray after a few weeks wear. I replaced the strap with a brown leather one and it looks amazing. The quality of these watches are excellent and I wear them both a lot. Lume is also great. Cannot fault either of them. NF was wearing his new hammie a couple days ago, I was quite surprised. I always thought we shared a sort of tired attitude about them. As cool as they are it is kind of old hearing all about it being the "essential field watch" all the time as if it were the only option. It's great, but it kind of turned me off to it after seeing it was almost the only thing allowed in 1000+ EDC posts until people started branching out. It's died off now, as people have kept adding to their collections so there's a bunch of variety. Thanks for the info. Good to know, it's funky how much maintenance some of these little buggers need. -doodle

The citizen is easily available. The BM8470-11E is an updated version i believe. The Seiko SNE095P2 is much rarer and really hard to find. I went for a Pulsar ( Seiko around 100 dollars ) PX3219X1 which was also pretty hard to find. Also solar and the lumes on the dial were just as good as the Seiko in the vid. Gotta love Chrono24 :)
@phakeacount22288 жыл бұрын
Well, I bought something else I didn't really need, well, maybe a little, because of this website. I now have the Seiko watch you reviewed with a steel band. It was less than $100 as a grey market item intended for the Asian market. Grey market means it has the Amazon warranty, but not the Seiko warranty. Similar American Seiko offerings are around $300. I liked the Seiko because I liked the big 12, 9, and 6. They and all 12 tick marks and the hands glow in the dark. Now, they are radium markings, so they need bright light exposure to work. Tritium is better that way, but it usually wears out after a dozen years or so. The solar feature is a welcomed addition--no dead batteries or either forgetting to wind, or over-winding. In the 1990s, I really liked those plastic Swatches. They weighed almost nothing, and certain models had clean, faces with Arabic numbers and date and day. Also, they were waterproof at least for snorkeling purposes. I added a watch-band compass (plastic watch, remember) and it was all I needed in the outdoors. Take off the compass and the face protector, and it was good for a dress suit. In the '90s, long straps were available to replace the very short ones that came with the watches. Now they aren't. So they are out, but I did buy a metal Swatch from their store in Caesar's Forum in Vegas in '05. The shop added a few extra links to the metal band to fit. Same utilitarian face and not so big that I could not wear it with a suit. I especially liked the radium dial markers and hands. Despite the extra links, it gets a bit tight on my wrist in hot weather, when I get a bit puffy. So, I saw your video. I really liked what I saw, except I did not like the bands. I've preferred metal bands ever since my Grandfather gave me his T.I. digital watch with stretch band in the 1980s. (Wish I still had it.) So, I found the Seiko with a metal band and ordered it. It's a bit heavier than the metal Swatch, but the dial is easier to read. Apparently, one can go snorkeling with it, which the metal Swatch could not do. And, the band is exactly the right size out of the box--slightly loose. Fortunately, if I ever decide it isn't long enough, I can order another band just like this one and just transplant a couple more links. With Swatch, one is pretty much stuck with what the factory offers, and which a proprietary lug pattern, only Swatch bands will fit. I also bought a new knocking around watch, which is a Casio analogue that reads "tough solar illuminator" on the case. It has luminous hour markers, hands, and numbers at the 9, 12, and 3. The 6 position has an LCD window for date, day, seconds, UTC, and 24-hour time. It was under $40. This was intended to replace a Lorus plastic watch I bought for $14 at a discount store about 15 years ago. I have it on a velcro band and use it for amateur astronomy, because the luminous dial is just excellent. Each Arabic number is painted in radium and also the hands, so one sees all the numbers except for the 3 (date window) in the dark. So, I may keep it with my astro stuff just for that.

I enjoy your watch videos. I've been into watches as long as I've been into knives. I'm looking at the Citizen solar powered, radio controlled watches now. Keep them coming. Wouldn't hurt to do more old fashioned knife reviews too. Just saying. :)

Citizens rock. Have an eco-drive. 10 years. Works like a charm. Had to replace the bracelet few years ago.

Seiko does make a fine watch. The kinetic movements are marvelous.

Great Video ! My Timex digital Field Watch Indiglo button failed... set to 24-Hour mode ! UP-graded my Field Watch with a NATO/EDC watchband with a Suunto button clip on compass. Ordered on Valentine Day 2024 a Titanium Field Watch at sub $100.00 USD/U$D that arrived about ten days later in its own plastic shipping container ! Did not like the too thick watchband that came with the watch... So I put on a Zulu Maratac-TM watchband that I ordered a few years earlier ! For active people the Automatic and/or Solar watch is a great idea ! Any good "Double T" watches out in the field (Titanium with Tritium) ? Thank you for a great review ! tjl

I was wondering if you ever got into field watches. I am a fan of the Timex Expedition watches. They are not solar powered, but they are inexpensive enough to buy another one if one of the two I already own get destroyed. I may get a solar powered field watch sometime in the future now that I know they exist.

Not to mention the Indiglo feature is awesome.

Oh yeah. I do like the Seiko glow illumination on the face better than the Timex Expedition.
