I'm glad you're showing vets from different eras with different experiences. I could relate a lot with Andy, as we're close to the same age, but I know the young folks probably relate more with the GWOT era vets. I think Andy is a good example of well-adusted vet who values gaining good life experience while in service to our country. Thanks for a great episode.

Riser burn was like hangovers. It was something you lived with! In 1982 after landing in a thorn bush in White Sands NM. I was walking to the assembly area. I heard a strange noise just before a Kevlar hit the ground about 10 ft in front of me?

I had the same desire to join the Army back in 1986 to be an Airborne Infantryman. The only difference was I did go to combat for the Panama 89-90 and Iraq 2006-08. Otherwise it was hurry up and wait for most of the time. I was in Mech Infantry in Germany after Airborne School to include Ft. Carson. Finally I got to Panama into an Airborne Battalion. i did experience a lot of negative things in the Army but I did remember all the tough and good times especially people. I did remember very fondly about all the jumps I made and even laughed about the ones where I went feet, ass, and head. We were Paratroopers once and proud of it because not everyone who wanted to be a Paratrooper never became one. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY! FURY FROM THE SKY!!!

There used to be a time when folks would join out of high school because thats what the whole town did. Kind of an introduction to manhood and instill self discipline and reenforce what your parents taught you. And if war broke out then you would be at the ready to serve.

I remember we made it to I think 79 or 80 days back in the 95-96 time frame and everyone was getting ready to have the four day weekend. Some paratroop got killed during a live fire and the whole division was in full rage mode. Never have I experienced fellow troopers actually hate a dead soldier like that before. If he would have died earlier in the 40 day mark it would be understandable but make it to 80 days .....

Was in 82nd in the mid-90's ( CG Crocker- "Long Gray Line"/ Patraeus (4 star/CIA)/ Lloyd Austin (4 star / current Sec of Def.). We came up with a diddy: "be a friend to you and me, don't burn in till day 83"

I was there 91-95. I remember that one time the safety board reached 82. It even went past 82 for a little while. Then that was it. Never again. LoL. I've got the same back problems too. One thing different from our experience is that everyone I was with was pretty much a raging alcoholic. The morning PT runs was just a cloud of booze fumes.

If he went in '91 that means he's 2 or 3yrs younger than my oldest bro who went in in '89 straight from HS grad too so he's early 50s? Right?😂 but most men cant pull off that hair at younger ages much less that age. Dunno if he just went lighter to cover the greys but overall I wouldnt have guessed he was in that age range🤷♀️

Panama nor Afghanistan are considered big time combat. Airborne infantry are mostly 3 jump chumps.
