This theory and statement was not made by me. it's kinda a long explanation but hope you'll read it to understand what the mv is all about. The whale concept was derived from the a whale called Alice aka ‘The Loneliest Whale in the World’, who is an unidentified whale species, being the only whale emitting a call at 52-hertz. The astronaut concept was derived from the story of the astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship and coming back saying that those 48 minutes were the longest and most loneliest of mankind. The combination of these two concepts placed within the MV discusses being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut is in space) and being isolated. Isolation was one of the themes in the mv (when Kai was seen being alone when the other members were playing/when Chanyeol and Suho were fighting). The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, would meet a low point where they feel most isolated and most out of their place, but that this song (and EXO) will be there to warm their hearts. In a way, this song could also be indirectly dedicated to the members who have left considering the lyrics of the song. I also just read this somewhere but the story does fits. It is said that the MV was inspired by a poem titled "The Astronaut's Whale" The whale was lonely and sad and wants to see the stars, planets, and planes. So the astronaut took him to space. They were happy for some time but they realizes they don't belong there. The whale misses his home. So even though they already built a relationship, the astronaut took the whale back to the sea. And the astronaut also went to his family. They promised that even if they are not together, they will still be friends. Note that this winter album was released after the departure of the 3 members. "Sing For You" is literally, as the title says, EXO singing to EXO-L and some say the MV and song are about how the members feel and how they are dealing with Kris, Luhan and Tao leaving the group. The members really felt like they let fans down during this time and that they broke their promise to always be one. So this song was a promise and apology song. That's why you see Chanyeol and Suho get in a fight, because as the leader Suho really blamed himself for not being able to keep the group together and Chanyeol is pretty much yelling at Suho to stop blaming himself and that there is no point because Kris, Luhan and Tao made their own choices and there is nothing he could have done about it even if he wanted to, etc. They are all angry and sad because they felt like they were all so blindsided by all that and how the members just left without even talking to them about it. A lot happened during this time and there was so much uncertainty about what it meant for the group, etc. In the end you start to see them being happy and playing around as friends again because they were learning to get past it all and move on and they made the choice to let it go and to keep singing for us, EXO-Ls.:) The whale seems kind of weird until you discover the meaning behind it all, and then it shows how clever and meaningful they were with the concept. The whale is supposed to represent Alice aka ‘The Loneliest Whale in the World’, who is an unidentified whale species, she is the only whale that has been found to emit a call at a really high frequency which means that when she speaks there might not be any other whales that can hear her or answer her back. The astronaut comes from the story of an astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship as he came back to Earth and how he said that those 48 minutes were the longest and most lonely of mankind. The combination of these two concepts along with the lyrics of the song talk about being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut are in space) and being isolated from everything and everyone. The lyrics of EXO’s winter ballad, “Sing For You,” describes someone who has regrets towards the person that they love and expresses the desire to sing a confession song for that person. Because it breaks the illusion of what it means to be an idol, and EXO is arguably one of the most popular male K-pop idol group in the world today, depression has been taboo to the group (despite former members leaving and others visibly struggling through performances). But throughout the music video for “Sing For You,” EXO depicts the sort of inner turmoil that isn’t about the love-related lyrics of the song, and instead depict the struggles that go along with the world that they (and the rest of us) live in. “Sing For You” is the opposite of an upbeat anthem; the music video shows suffering and loneliness in a way that just doesn’t let viewers ignore it. The 52-hertz whale may be alone, but he’s also a symbol of hope, of resilience, when feeling alone. By bringing out their inner whales and depicting loneliness that is on par with that of the 52-hertz whale, EXO not only helps their audiences understand that each individual isn’t the only one struggling in this world with loneliness, but also helps people relate more to the very human K-pop artists.

There is a reason why Sehun is floating in space in astronaut clothing and why is this whale, that called "52 hertz," which is the loneliest whale in the world, it is on a lonely journey in the seas and oceans, singing its song that the other whales can not hear. (not that it does not try to communicate with the others, on the contrary, it does it all the time, but the frequency of the sounds it produces is so high that no other whales can hear it.) So what they both represent in this MV is loneliness, the loneliness of the astronaut hovering alone In space detached from the rest of humanity and distant from them and also the whale.y you can also see in the MV that they all gone... it is because they are al lonely and remember the good times\or wishing to be together. i love this message Hope you noticed - when Chanyeol and Suho fought and beat each other so Kai danced the movements according to their Beating, the entire video has a connection between one member and another when everyone is alone, lonely and sad suddenly their loneliness connects with the other...

One of my fave EXO songs and MVs. I wish the whole thing was around 20s longer though, it feels like it needs an additional bridge to show more of the lonely parts hehe. I always cry when I watch this video/hear this song. I think it's supposed to be an indirect reference to the members that left- this is the first album without all three, after Tao left. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe basketball was a reference to Luhan, fighting was a reference to Tao (his martial arts), and the galaxy was one to Kris. The members start to disappear mid video, and the raw emotions you can feel are just too much. Suho fighting and crying because he feels responsible, Kai (representing the other members) indirectly being hurt because of everything... EXO, man. EXO.
