I spent 22 years in the military, 4 on active duty and 18 in the guard. Deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. Retired an E7. Hegseth acts like all the bro morons on TDY. It's just a party to him. I have opinions about the military and how it should be run. I run a small business. I have no qualifications to be Sec Def. Just opinions. So, the same as Hegseth. Marine here. The idea of a MAJOR (lowest field grade officer rank) being in charge of 40+ 4 Star Generals who have hundreds of combined years of leadership experience is not only laughable, but terrifying. Because the military is a subculture of the US, service members have similar reactions and political alignments as their civilian counterparts. Despite this, political leanings overall vary by branch, and the USMC specifically leans republican. Regardless of that fact, most buddies I’ve served with (anecdotal evidence) think this is reckless and I agree.

There should be no person that has ever been in the military - past, present, or future - that would *EVER* think it would be a good idea for an O-4 to be promoted to, effectively, an O-11. As a former Marine who was part of a Regimental HQ Company (the 'administrative' head of a regiment that sits over 3 battalions), I regularly dealt with a relatively significant number of officers between O-5 and O-8 and there was a drastic difference in level of understanding between the O-5s I dealt with and the O-8 leading the regiment. That's not even delving into the O-2s though O-4s I was deployed with when I went to Iraq as an attachment to the HQ Co. of one of our battalions.

So, here's my story about why I DO NOT respect higher ups in the National Guard; I was outprocessing from the Army, and decided to sign up with a National Guard unit, because your initial term is 8 years regardless of your contract. 4 years Active duty, still have 4 years Inactive Ready Reserve at worst. I get back from Iraq Christmas of 2009, start doing my paperwork to get out, and sign on with the NG, because I may as well try to help keep others up to speed while on my way out. I am in Germany, outprocessing from January to March, I have a month of leave that I AM ABSOLUTELY USING BECAUSE I AM STILL MAKING ACTIVE DUTY MONEY while I get to try to adjust. Someone from my NG unit calls me after I'm finally off of Active Duty in mid April 2009, "Sgt Blazkowicz, you have been FTR since January." "Excuse me, what?" "Our records indicate that you were assigned to our unit in January, you have failed to report, and you are facing disciplinary action." "You misunderstood, I was on Active Duty until just a few days ago because I was on leave and I was in Germany from January until March, so I'm asking why I have been considered FTR." "... So, we're going to just go ahead and have you transferred to the Inactive Ready Reserve, and drop this entirely." "I think that's for the best." Not only have they been incompetent in what they have gotten their lower ranks into, they can't do their own jobs without trying to show someone else up, despite being in the wrong. Cool, be as incompetent as you want, just don't involve anyone else. That's why I get so upset with "alpha males," they can barely take care of themselves, why should anyone listen to you? Sorry for ranting, I do love you as Hugo, but H Jon is just someone I can listen to for eternity. His voice is soothing, I'm sorry, Sam.

Why would you need to say O before 10? I get it for a single digit, but it kind of bugs me that they still do it for double digits. If it's not a sig fig, what the hell is it?

Yeah, I'm being long winded, but read me out. I feel I must remind a few on this matter. In 1945 the US had over 10 million men and women in active duty military service and over 7,600 ships afloat in the US Navy. We have more Generals and Admirals today, commanding about 1.3 million men and women and about 300 ships, than there were in 1945.

It's a lit of cope I've heard from people... they may not admit it, but they realize what they assumed were priorities may be pushed away now

I work in Acquisition for the Army and Majors are the lowest rank I work with (occasionally a captain sneaks through). In my world a MAJ is a program manager. They’re given one, maybe two programs (or contracts) to manage with a civilian product team of a few engineers, and a logistician. These are officers in their mid 30s still learning their trade and working up the ranks. Ive worked with some great MAJs (and some bad ones) but the point is, they haven’t proven much yet. In civilian terms I’d say they’re are like program managers making around $90K-120K a year.

The other piece I’d add is being a National Guardsman is a knock against him as well for being under qualified. Guardsman can be great don’t get me wrong, it’s not a knock on them at all. It’s just the Guard operates SO different from active Military so he’s just going to be ignorant to SO much about how the military buys, develops, delivers capability, operates and trains. The guy really won’t have a clue.

During the ill fated UK prime minister term of Liz Truss a national newspaper started comparing her length of time in the job to how long a lettuce lasted before going bad. So they would do a daily update of the health of the lettuce vs the health of her premiership. Very imaginative and I'm sure sold a lot of papers or online subscriptions for them. Of course the lettuce won because it lasted longer than her tenure. I propose that Sam and Emma and the team at MR choose a vegetable for each cabinet pick and start the comparison as soon as they take up office. I wouldn't be too surprised that a few vegetables would win this competition and last longer than their human counterpart. Probably do a better job as well lol.
