I've been a custom deck builder going on 15years now and built all kinds of projects for people...i would never use Thompson's Water Seal on anything of mine I wanted to expose to more than a misting of cold water once in a blue moon. I think you'll find vinyl panels or multi-mil poly much better. ...and the landscspe architect in me wants to recycle the shower water.

727skirk ...Friend, using aqua-net hair spray is about as water proof as Thompson's. Then to use it on OSB in a shower? If we're going to think outside of the box to cut costs, lets try construction poly or tyvek that I know he has or even recycled sheet metal or milled cedar boards.

Good point, doing it twice or three times is inefficient and cost alot more in time and resources. I would pre-build the walls of shower at home, glue on vinyl/poly to the Ply, then just assembly on site and bring my silicon gun....done.

You can get a cheep shower stall for under $100 they come with the bottom tray a plastic sheeting for the wall and a frame to hold it in place along with the faucet and shower head all you need is a 2x4 frame or a plywood in closure like you maid I’ve put up a couple you can assemble one in less than an hour with a 1 1/2 - 2” drain pipe you don’t have to worry about the walls or floors and you probably spent more than that on the water sealer

Josh: Other than North Africa and the Middle East; this is the first home built by a crew for the boss, that I have seen, that was a tent. A ring and clear plastic shower curtain from Ikea would be a nice finish for the shower. I hope you can get the pole building closed in and include a 12x12 insulated room in it with wood heat. You will need to have an area to warm up in when working in a unheated shelter/wood shed over winter. Bert

Looks like a great setup. The tent's ability to expand makes it better than a yurt in My mind. Carbon Monoxide detectors? The wood stove should burn off some of the moisture.

@TheWolfster0016 жыл бұрын
A good Idea would be to use some 2 to 3 inch (firm) foam insulation for the roof & walls, it would stiffen it up and make it stronger to withstand snow loads on it and it would make it a bit easier to keep warm & cool.. Just a thought

I spent a winter and a half in the wilderness with two G.I. ponchos and a sleeping bag for cover. I did build a couple of shelters, but they had no floors, and the biggest was about ten feet long by eight feet wide, by seven feet tall. I made one out of stacked rock homemade mortar, saplings, and dirt. It had enough of a fireplace to keep such a small shelter toasty. Windows are the hard part in the wilderness, but I made one big enough to let in plenty of light using two sheets of heavy gauge clear plastic. It worked well enough. I didn't sleep in it very often because I was running a very long trap line, and I had to check the traps regardless of weather conditions. But I did use it as a place to skin animals I trapped, or to flesh and stretch the furs if I skinning the animals while out on the trail. The other was just an emergency stop on the trail, and was solid, but made from saplings and dirt alone. Anyway, because of my experience, I know the importance of a warm, comfortable place to live, if you're actually going to live full time, forever in the wilderness. It's tough enough spending a winter in the cold backcountry by yourself, and it all changes completely when you have a family, One person can adjust to the cold. Six days of constant exposure makes your body turn on the heat engine, and cold largely stops bothering you, as long as you keep the engine well fed. This is why you often see people in far northern areas walking around without heavy coats, and often working without gloves, when visitors from the south freeze, even when wearing far more winter gear. But doing this with a family gets much, much harder, so a really good shelter system is a must. I love your system. As I said, staying warm shouldn't be a problem for one person, but having most of the comforts of home is a problem, and it looks like you've managed to take care of just about everything. There were times I would have killed for a hot shower, or just to have the space to walk around without putting on my heavy clothing.
@TheOregonTale7 жыл бұрын
Looks great. Maybe a dehumidifier for all the moisture from shower and what not? or Maybe wood stove will help with the moisture sufficiently. At any rate, nothing beats a hot shower and a warm place to lay your head at the end of the day. ;)-Dede

Great idea for a shower. The use of board covered with a water repellant was a neat idea. However my preference for added longevity of the walls, I would have covered the walls of the shower with a vinyl floor covering. Lightweight, inexpensive and protects the wood. The floor is great but again I would probably again used a waterproof flooring with an escape hole for the water. Great video though. Certainly got me thinking about off grid showering.

It all appears to work.... The shower should be outside the tent. First that would take care of the condensation problem created by hot steam. Second, it would allow you to seal the hole in the floor letting in that cold draft day and night. A pop up shower is only $50 bucks compared to all the problems that interior, wafer board, no drain shower will be causing.
@EssentialMountainHomesteading7 жыл бұрын
Steve, That's a great idea we will definitely look in to that next season.

Also, do you have two wood stoves? The stove shown will not heat 500sqft of tent above 45 degrees in cold weather. You can hang a curtain to cut the area in half or by 2/3 rds for a warmer sitting/sleeping area... For $2500 dollars you could have purchased a large 5th wheel trailer or Park Version RV Trailer... and built onto it... outside shower and play room.

Large Copper pipe cut pipe into sections. Then drill tiny holes down one side with one larger hole. Fill cavity of pipe with high heat carbon felt. Sweat end caps on pipes. Use thick wire to bend a stand to hold your copper burners. Fill copper pipe burners with alcohol or liquid heat using the large holes in the pipes. You now have an alternative way to heat your wood stove in a pinch. 😊😉
