Until I heard Arnel, I had a stupid idea in my head that Journey needed the original singer. As I get older, the more stupid that idea seems. Though there was a time when Journey needed the original singer, especially in the 1980's. That time expired when he chose to leave the band. Arnel Pineda became the new front man, and voice of Journey when that happened. Even though a childish part of me wanted to hear what a sing-off would look like (since I heard mr. Perry's lack of chops a couple of years ago), it really isn't necessary. Arnel has the presence, humility, and talent to hold that mantle. It's obvious that he clicks, and that his bandmates feel that.

Say what you will about Journey in recent years, with the lineup changes and constant drama and such. Live in Manila is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. It's a shame it's not more accessible on streaming services and such. The vocals from Arnel and Deen both are fantastic. The backing vocals are great. The guitars are dreamlike, just like on the Revelation album (underrated as well). The song list is also phenomenal. I have nothing negative to say about it at all. It's a soundscape of magic from start to finish.
