Hello Arnel. I really wanna master prepositions but which are not idioms. Example for this following sentence, do I have to use 'away' or 'off'? The cat lapped away the milk in a bowl or the cat lapped off the milk in a bowl? Thanks in advance.
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish28 күн бұрын
This is where prepositions get really tricky. The best preposition would be "up." "Lap up" would mean to drink everything, usually from a bowl or bucket. The other two prepositions don't really fit in my opinion. Did you see this example sentence somewhere? If I had to choose between "away" and "off," "away" is the better choice. "Away" often means "gone" (The current swept the sailor away.) or "not here" (Please move away from the fire.). So, if we say "lap the milk away" then it could possibly mean "drink all the milk." "Off" is not correct because that would mean the milk was ON the bowl. I hope this helps :)

Oh, great score! I got 16 correct out of 17. Thank you very much for the insightful explanation of Prepositions of Movement. But the doubt between "over' and "across" still lives on, but maybe not as a Prepositions of Movement. Examples: 1. There is a bridge across/over the river. 2. There is a small shop across/over the road. I think " I jumped over the Thames" would be correct. Thank you.
@ArnelsEverydayEnglishАй бұрын
Wonderful Yogesh! "I jumped over the Thames" is grammatically correct, but you would need super power legs to do that 😆. Yes, "over" and "across" can definitely be confusing. 1) Both "over" and "across" can be used. However, "over" is more common when speaking about a bridge's position. And, "across" the river could mean "on the other side of the river" which wouldn't really make sense for a bridge. 2) There is a small shop ACROSS the road. This is correct, because it means the shop is on the other side of the road. I've seen a few examples of "over the road" being used to mean "across the road," but I don't believe that's so common. I hope this helps! :)

When we use across with roads we like cross the road but with bridge we like walk along The my logic is lets say road and bridge are both in rectangular shape and A and B(left and right - length) and C and D (top and bottom-width) So why with roads we move from C to D But with bridges from A to B

I got 17/17. Thank you so much for a such helpfull video, Arnel! Maybe someone can help me. Can I replace "onto" with "on" in 12th sentence?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglishАй бұрын
Excellent Abricosca!! Sometimes people use "on" and "onto" interchangeably, especially with the verbs: jump, dive, drop, fall, put, and throw. So yes, "on" could be used in sentence 12. However, it's important to note that many times there is a clear difference: ON = the location. We walked on the boat. (This tells you where we were walking.) ONTO = the movement from one place to the next. We walked onto the boat. (This tells you that we got on the boat.) I hope this helps! :)
