In Raymond Murphy's books, I have read that we can't use 'the' with the words like school, college, university, hospital, prison, bed, temple, church, etc when we use it for its primary purpose. For example, When we say, "I am in hospital". It means, I am the patient. When we say, "I am in the hospital". It means, I am not the patient but may be a visitor. But, you used "in the hospital". May I know why?

Even though I've been learning English for a long time and I can watch movies and series in it, I still get mixed up with prepositional verbs because the combinations are different in my language. I think I've watched all your lessons, and there hasn’t been one about this topic yet, right?😅? I’m curious if there's any way to organize them. P.S. Even in this lesson, there was a sentence "There is nothing below us except for the ocean", where I for sure wouldn’t have added "for" after "except."😂😂 "I have candy stuck in my tooth" - you can't really open a tooth... "Inside an atom, there are neutrons, protons, and electrons" - yeahhh.. we definitely easily can open an atom😂😂😅

Wow!! Excellent explanation of the differences in prepositions! I’ve been a teacher for 30 years and I didn’t know that in front of cannot be used when two people are looking at each other !! If you’re standing outside McDonalds waiting for a friend you’d say in front of?! Or Thad depends whether McDonald’s is behind or I’m looking at it ? Wow..this confused me a little ..pls explain🙏and I’d always thought that if there’s a hall in between you can say: across from…I though it was always used when there’s a street not a hall in between.
