Arnold "The Brain" Rothstein was the banker for the mob. He would make loans to Gangster to start and fund all types of rackets. Say Arnold would lend a Gangster 10k for a new bootlegging endeavor. He would then make them sign a life insurance policy for 10, maybe 25k, so his loans were always paid one way or another. A lot of cases you better pay quick cuz you might be worth more dead than alive.

Arnold was killed by George McManus who was Titanic Thompsons Bodyguard (Google Titanic Thompson) Titanic was the greatest Hustler to ever live and he was just lik Doc Holiday and such a great Card player people would always accuse them of cheating. On a night when Arnold kept wanting to play while in the hole and ran the tab up HUGE and then declared he wasn't paying and McManus put a shit to the belly and was ultimately charged with murder and found innocent. If you have never heard of Titanic, I highly recommend checking out his Wiki. Absolutely genius with prop bets, he could play & beat Ray Floyd playing golf Right or left handed. He made staggering amounts of cash beating every pro at the time. When asked why he didn't join the PGA, he replied ("I would have to take a pay cut")

That is NOT true that rothstein was always cash strapped and didn't have the funds to pay the players. This was true later in his life after his divorce but his nickname was literally "THE BIG BANKROLL" because he would carry sometimes 100 thousand on his person at all times. He also had massive real estate holdings. He was just cheap and didn't like to pay his debts.

Plus, later on, he got into using heroine, so his judgement might have been clouded and he started falling for fixed card games. And his unwillingness to pay off on one led to his murder.
