Your tone has basically 10% distortion but a lot of sustain (maybe that's some compression) so your notes ring clearer and less noisy in general. I think that makes it sound better if you can find that sound you like. Always amazing technique!

He is just relaxed while he plays. Also I think that size of hands has big impact on that. Even he, with his giant hands, is leaving the support point a little bit to reach all the strings. With smaller hands you would have to move you hand more and lose a precision with that.

It’s so frustrating! It feels like starting all over again thinking you had pretty good pinking technique…. Arggggg! Even without the left hand involved, just trying to pick at that speed doing those stringskips is already impossible….. Well obviously it is possible but not to us normal humans. Hmmm, maybe Anton is AI, that would explain things ;-)

I don't even understand how you can even do this. There's literally 3 people I have seen in the internet that can do this, you, Andy wood and Steve Morse. I am pretty good at alternate picking, I can pick scales in an Al Di Meola or Paul Gilbert style but this is just too much. I tried to do it but I gave up a while ago. It's in my "impossible licks list" haha. You are amazing Anton.

I am a blues player foundationally, and I actually use sweeps often but I approach them differently than what you usually encounter. I actually sweep a triad, and I use it as a melodic like rake if that makes sense. Just three notes simply going down or up, and I often use this to bridge phrases or add a bit of spice like rolling your tongue ya know?

Anton, alternate picking is arguably the most EFFECTIVE or "functional" way to pick indeed, it gives you more control over timing/rhythm, etc... BUT, to my taste, it tends to sound quite "percussive" at times, especially when compared to economy/sweep picking. In that regard, it could carry an aesthetic aspect that maybe is overlooked in this discussion. Now don´t get me wrong, i´m a Gilbert fan, i LOVE that machinegun-milimetrically tight picking sound that comes with alt. picking, but it´s hard to get the more smooth or fluid sound of economy, (and the same is even more evident backwards). Gilbert picking runs vs Malmsteen picking runs, Steve Morse arpeggios vs Jason Becker arpeggios. Also, have you tried playing 2 string odd number patterns (groups of 5, 7 ,9 and beyond). Something like 4 strokes in the E string and 3 strokes in the B string?? There you have an example where maybe is better to combine alt. picking with economy, than just strict alt. picking (works for me at least). Lastly, while the idea of having a restriction in terms of picking strokes per strings may sound crazy or absurd, it certainly doesn´t bother Gambale, who improvises and shreds at will in jazz and fusion standards. The same is the case with "one-way pickslanters" (Cracking the code jargon) like Malmsteen and Eric Johnson, who are both "restricted" but they sound quite confident. Maybe that restriction in pure technical terms can play in favor in other aspects?. It came longer than intended haha, hope you can read and comment.

Anton, what are your thoughts on strict alternate pickers injuring themselves as they get older? Doesn't Steve Morse have wrist problems now? Sweep picking has less chance of Repetitive Strain Injuries. If I alternate pick everything, I feel the RSI pain coming.
@AntonOparinENG
@AntonOparinENG 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Hank. Let's start from the beginning. First of all, even the most strict alternate pickers when the play songs use less alternate picking than all other techniques. For example I use it only when I need some special legibility. I'm not talking about caprices and other tunes made for violin and other instruments, that's why they're so hard to play on guitar. But anyway everyone uses alternate picking and there are only 2 types of guitarists. Those who can do it properly and clean and those who can't and try to avoid it and use now legato and etc. But anyway everyone uses it. If Steve Morse had problems with his wrist, I don't think it's because of alternate picking, never heard of his wrist problems, imagine what kind of strain on joints professional sportsmen undergo like hockey players and others, they do it for 30-40 years and it can't compare to a guitar string and noone has these problems. And it can't compare to what your knees undergo when you walk all your life and while doing it for so many years they do it with all your bodyweight. It's hundred times more strain on joints. My dad is a professional sport doctor, you need to go doctors and find out what's wrong with your health, with your metabolism in particular. Half of all people on the planet have problems with joints, especially 50+... It doesn't mean alternate picking caused it to them all. If you feel pain, visit doctor in joints, but not muscles.
@HankCoffey

@@AntonOparinENG Hi Anton, thank you for the reply. As simple as Up and Down picking may seem, the guitarists that do not alternate pick properly have a hard time string crossing. I do something called string hopping when alternate picking string crossings. That is probably what causes the muscle strain. Bad technique. This bad technique has forced me to sweep the crossings. Instead of hopping around. I totally agree with what you say about sweeping not being in perfect time. But I stopped practicing strict alternate picking. Because I know my technique is bad. So why burn it into muscle memory more? I can't figure the proper string crossings out. I instinctively string hop. lol. Take care for now 🙂

Hehe the technique you seem to be describing at about 5:39 is economy picking. I will say that while it may seem un-intuitive, it really is a cheat code to fast and accurate playing! Check out Cesario Filho who uses it extensively ala Yngwie, and of of course Eric Johnson with his pentatonic economy picking. Love your playing btw, and I do believe you are the most technically proficient electric guitarist in the world today, even better than Guthrie Govan in my estimation!
@AntonOparinENG
@AntonOparinENG 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, really appreciate your kind words. No, I learned economy picking for few years and tried it. Economy picking is always worse than Alt.Picking and doesn't allow you to play odd number of notes on the string, which I can't afford myself. I want to be totally free when I play guitar. I don't want to care how many notes to play on a string. Cesario is no doubt a great guitar player, but his picking lacks synchronization of two hands, (which is a rhythmical problem of economy picking) also lacks dynamics with this technique, cause it doesn't allow you to choose how deep you lower the pick into the strings ON EACH NOTE. It may be enough for some guitarists and their music, but I just prefer to control rhythm of lick totally and have a choice in dynamics. Thanks again, man! Really appreciate that

@@AntonOparinENG I don´t think Rick Graham or Frank Gambale feels restricted by economy picking. You clearly has great technique, far better than mine, but stating one technique is better than another simply because you think so is just that- your opinion. Not a fact.
@AntonOparinENG
@AntonOparinENG 4 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasVammenJensen I can ensure you that I never say anything if i didn't do proper practical research before it and I worked a lot with economy picking as well. It didn't allow me to play classical pieces that i wanted. It will never give you choice of dynamics for each note, which is very needed for music. Also it will never give you total rhythmical control over what your play, especially if you play pretty hard. Different tension of the strings won't allow you that. You can slow down that technique and you'll hear how less perfect it sounds. If they play with economy picking they always have to obey the rules with how many notes they play and only one volume, I prefer to not have any rules in playing. I prefer to be able to play anything I want on the guitar. I didn't say those guys are bad guitar players, they are amazing guitar players, i just said that this technique won't allow you to do some things that another will. Imagine the situation when you play a solo, some lick - three notes on a string, but you skip one or two strings... 6th-4th-2nd string... and you need to play it with a pick. Easy example, and... You see, It's not gonna work. And my way allows me to play it easily a lot more things. That's why Gambale will never play things like Paul Gilbert , with all the respect to Frank. If there are two guys in MMA who fight and you say to one of them that he MUST use only one hand, he will most likely lose. So that's why I'd recommend you to not waste time on economy picking, it won't allow you to do a lot of stuff. Work on your alternate picking more. It's very good thing. You can join my guitar academy and I'll teach you all the things about guitar playing. There's more than 60 video lessons and exercises. And my personal control of your practice. I've seen Steve Morse play Tumeni Notes many times, and like many others have failed miserably to duplicate his efforts. One thing I noticed between the way he plays it and your rendition here is that Steve uses a kind of economy to his fingering. Rather than putting each finger on the string as you play the note (very hard indeed) Steve as much as possible places his fingers on the frets beforehand like a chord and navigates around.
