Before starting my second year in university, during the summer break, I went around town and kept insisting for architectural firms to accept me as an intern. The fifth one liked me and my initiative even though they knew I just finished first year. At first they allowed me to go 8 hours a week, split into two days in the afternoon as to avoid clients because it was a small space (which again was my proposition when I noticed they didnt immediately denny me). I started picking up very fast with different software and started a 3ds max course around the same time. They started liking me and I started to go more often, after wich they noticed that I started to become useful. Fastforward a few months they gave me my first viz projects. Quality of those projects was acceptable to them and out of respect that they were so kind to me I didnt like the thought of charging them but they payed me something anyway. This went on for two years and I got to do lots of projects wich helped me improve a lot. It was this exact firm that would later recommend me to an interior design firm without me knowing and I got accepted after an interview out of nowhere... still am great friends with everyone of them.

Great storey mate, it's funny how every storey starts with a small act, of what looks to be impossible and before you know it, those small actions have spanned into something huge down the road. Any work you'd like to share a link to? Thanks again for sharing really nice storey

Yes, indeed. I often think back of how things went one after another, growing and growing. How they helped me get into the industry and into my profession before even finishing university. Since then I've always tried to pay it forward as much as possible in their honor and in the hopes that I will help someone just like I was once helped. I couldn't find many projects, but here are 2 of the first viz projects I did as an intern and the first freelance job ever: drive.google.com/open?id=1D9vjRUulMEPR2hjaeerBexFB4c1BKGpt and this is the first project in the firm I was accepted later: facebook.com/pg/LD-studio-140573601670/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10153134979226671

First little internship I was able to secure over the Summer break was because I based a history essay on the adaptive reuse they were undertaking for an old historically listed flour mill. This allowed me the opportunity to enter their office on equal footing and to really ask them questions about the project. This would later lead to the internship (which they were gracious enough to pay) and to an awesome essay I was passionate about. This also have me an opportunity to see the areas I was really lacking in and see where I needed improvement. Never underestimate how easy it is to get a conversation flowing about a project your passionate about with the professionals creating it. People love to talk about their work and design plans. This conversation may lead to a job or it may not but you are still creating connections within the profession

Hi LJ, thanks for sharing that, a very good example of a targeted approach and also how actions can always lead to something down the road. Anything you would have done differently had to try and find a job today?

In regards to finding the job, probably not. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I possibly would have picked a practice closer to uni so there was a potential of continuing the work as I transitioned into masters. I did know location would not suit going in however but I still wanted to pursue it for the heritage work they were completing. One tip I would give is don't be afraid to ask questions while your there. This is something I should have done more and it would have benefited both myself and the practice more. I was somewhat left to my own devices to produce documentation based on an example that I later found out was incorrectly produced and shouldn't have been used as a benchmark. Had I asked more questions we would have found this out sooner and time would not have been wasted.

Thank you for this video. I'm trying to start a freelancing service in 3D architecture visualization. I have already done one free project for a small-time architect. He has paid projects coming for me in the future, so I would say that the building relationships is important. I have a question though. I'm struggling to pitch my services to potential clients. I don't know how to communicate how they would benefit from my services. I don't come from the architecture field, so I have pretty much ZERO knowledge of the process. Is there somewhere that I can go that will teach me all of the information necessary to understand WHY an architect would want or need a 3D visualization?

I'll be real right now. I'm so scared right now. I'm currently in the middle of my career and I haven't practiced in any studio I feel like I'm falling behind and that scares me a lot. I really want to learn and I don't know why I'm so introvert. Damn it... Could somebody give me some advice ? It would be highly appreciated

Is it ok. I have the same situation as yours but don't be demotivated. Infact, step up and apply to more places for internship aslo it is ok to get rejected at first but make sure as you go through this process to learn something everyday from your university and people around you. So when you get an internship you will have enough knowledge which you can apply practically.
