Good video and good look at the pros/cons of the various options. I like the 'system' aspect of a jetboil, I had an original PCS back in the day but sold it, couldn't get past the fact that it's bulky, I still look at them though, good at what they do. Currently I like the 750ml mug/1l nalgene combo in a pouch similar to yours, I add a swedish folding mug on top of the Nalgene and the front pocket can hold a meths burner and a small fuel bottle or a BCB hexy burner and about 6 gel blocks (3 in the burner) or a compact cannister mounted gas stove plus a 100g gas can as well as a bic lighter, ferro rod and spork. The cookpot and any of the burner set-ups can re heat or re hydrate MRE wetpacks, tins re-bagged in foil pouches or dehydrated meals, the only thing you can't do is cook food, but adding a non stick trangia lid/pan would cover that, double as a plate and not take up much space in the pack, for a back up a small fold up twig stove could probably fit in the pouch front pocket. That's my current set up but I still like the 58 pattern bottle/mug with the mk1 Crusader mug and burner, like you a bit of stove cord added and you can use hexy/gel/meths or if all else fails, twigs. For me anyway the cook system is always changing LOL

The smaller pot and micro stoves, I set up in preparedness with using my own dehydrated meals. After using dehydrated meals now for over a year, can say I ain't a fan of them, for many reasons. I personally benefit more from home made wet meals sealed in mylar bags, ready to heat up in the jetboil, boil in the bag style. There are various size jetboil pots that e=will allow for other style of cooking, such as pot cooking, and skillet cooking, along with the original PCS style, rat pak cooking, I am use to. Wet food allows me to reduce to amount of water carried into camp, although dehydrated meals in them selves are lighter, so it seems to balance out about the same, regarding weight. Guess I just like the convenience of rat pak meals and the compact nesting capability of the jetboil. Wood stoves a complete gimmick, when a fire can just as easily be built directly on the ground, but to each their own, and viewers need not view topics that don't interest them....atb b

@@bexbugoutsurvivor I'm not a particular fan of dehydrated meals as sold in camping shops etc either, overpriced and you can pretty much come up with something comparable at least for short term or day use by using something like a cup pasta with a portion of cheese and a pepperami, I tried dehydrating my own cooked meals but the results weren't to good to be honest. I tried my own wet meals by tipping tinned stews etc into mylar pouches as you've done and the results are better than dehydrated, probably better than MRE or wayfarer and certainly cheaper, the only downside is long term storage. Probably the only thing that would make me opt for dehydrated in some circumstances would be knowing there was a water source close to camp and wanting to go lightweight, a camp too far from water makes wet meals the better choice IMO but each to his own. I'm not a fan of twig stoves either although I have used them and at one point made and sold a compact double wall type, my main dislike is that the smell and smoke attracts too much attention, that said I have a very small folding one, 3-4" square that doubles as a pot stand/windshield for a meths burner. As for the jetboil type stoves, I like the concept, don't like the bulk when I can heat a wet pouch meal in a 750ml mug using a micro gas stove and fit the mug/lid/stove/gas/swedish folding cup and 1 litre of water in the same size pouch that it takes to hold a jetboil without the litre of water,. I agree, each to his own, in the end there is no right or wrong, you use what suits your preference. Anyway, thanks for the reply :-) p.s. Just noticed it was 2009 when I had the Jetboil PCS, I put a video up testing the boil time compared to a cannister mounted stove in January 2009, can't believe it was that long ago LOL

I too dehydrated all my own meals, down side is time consuming to make them, looses taste when rehydrated, and is not ready to eat even after the water is boiled, (I'm too hungry to wait while it soaks up) and too impatient...lol Regarding long term storage of wet foods in a mylar bags, I am experimenting with an air tight resealing method, results to follow....You have hit the nail on the head with finding a water source convenient to the route travelled. Wet food, carrying water for (drinks only) comes into its own. I need to up size my GSI pot to 750ml but titanium version is not suited to pre heat cooking (but suited best to boil in the bag) as the titanium pot burns for reheat cooking, say rice and pasta etc, so will continue my search for a 750 SS pot, preferably not an import either....atb...bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor I'll be interested in your results regrading long term storage of tinned stews etc re-bagged in mylar, I don't have a vac sealer but I've looked at them often enough, in all honesty if you have your rat pack made up apart from the main meal but have the tins to hand it's easy to make on demand for short 24hr possibly 48hr trips . 100% agree about titanium, it doesn't spread the heat well at all, a ti frying pan is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Another downside for me is I find ti has a strange taste/feeling but most people seem to manage, I prefer ss, ally or even plastic,. My 750ss pot is imported but works ok and cheap but I've seen ss coffee/tea storage tins in Poundstretchers/B&M etc that are close size wise but they're probably imported anyway :-( Currently working on composite rat packs, where I start with an 8hr (Lunch) pack, Part 1A Brew kit and Part 2A Snack/Sundries and add in Main/Breakfast and Parts 1B & 2B Snacks/Sundries as required. I keep a couple of 24hr and a 72hr ready to go. Just building the contents from shop items that I know work for me based around cup pasta's, instant porridge, tins mackeral etc 3/1 coffee and tins pouched up or the odd wayfarer for variety. Sports energy gels (I like High5) are a good addition and work out at about a quid each if you buy a box of 10 or more, High5 do isotonic drinks tablets which are handy, drop one in a bottle of water and good to go, no messing around with sachets of powder. Anyway, thanks again.

ooooh, that's a tough one. As I have a hanger full of ratties, so jet-boil is working out best for me. Makes alright coffee to boot... There is a follow up video to this on Friday, and there might be a stove I like for dehydrated meals, but am no sold on dry food, as I carry my water in, (no near by water source) on route to test ground...bex

Your gonna get me a £800 DLSR 4K camera? Whoo thanks mate.... Pack is the large alice, but am dikin around with molle mk2 hip belt and shoulder straps, and molle frame, (don't like the mod) I don't get money for doing these vids. neither am I sponsored, so money for a new camera is a bit tight, but am upgrading soon, to a box brownie... . But be aware, most vids are pre recorded months in advance, to accommodate pain clinic, and hospital stays, so new 4k recordings wont be seen for some time yet...bex

Trusty old army jet boil! :)))

@bexbugoutsurvivor 3 жыл бұрын
In training soldiers have to use hexi type stoves, after phase 2 training you have the freedom to buy your own stove. Some soldiers bought the mini pocket rocket, most bought the jet boil. Although jetboil is not issued, it was designed for the modern soldier, in order to fit in a webbing pouch, and tall enough to fit a ration rack. My wife bought me a new jetboil flash, my original (although in good working order) just needed updating (bit like me)....lol

@@bexbugoutsurvivor hm.. That's interesting. I would never thought of it. That fact that most of soldiers buy jet boil probably means they fed up with hexamine stoves :)
