One of the ORIGINAL Geargogs, here from the Carl Vinson CVN-70. We had a meeting and decided we weren't going to be called the traditional Gear Rats, so Gear Dogs was born. That was before we were even commissioned. True story, shipmates. ABE1 Waring USN '81-92

I worked in the arresting gear on the USS FORRESTAL starting in 1968. Mark 3 Mod 2 gear back then. Looking at this video I see some things have changed since I was an "arresting gear animal". It was ball busting work and dangerous, I saw things happen I'll never forget.

I saw our arresting gear officer get decapitated when he was being checked out on launching planes from the cats. Waist cat, A7, he stood up right after the cat got fired and the leading edge of the wing hit him in the head. I saw guys going intakes, guys get it from props. Planes crash into the ocean. Lots to never forget about. It was dangerous as hell.

tbirdflier I worked 3 and 3a on the Midway from 73 to 75 . I agree I saw six guys die one night with in 10 minuets; had a C .O .D .land missed the wire went off the angle and almost went swimming . Also brought on a few thousand refugees when Saigon fell . I hope you were not on the Forestall during that hell they had ; I was fortunate not to have anything as bad as that happen to me . One thing I can say about my time in that “ canoe club” was that it made me grow up and gave me a good work ethic. I made ABE - 2 in less than 4 years, first major accomplishment for me . Thanks for your service .

Def. I've heard story's of them not being payed enough what they deserve which makes me sad. These men should be payed atleast starting 60-80k a year for something like this. Being away from home for so long. Working around equipment that can kill you instantly if it fails. Like he said they are the backbone of these carriers. I felt bad for the guy at the end I couldn't tell if he was remembering about loosing someone or just this job being so hard on him. These men and women deserve way more recognition and respect IMO.

Everyone should feel appreciated as every job matters. Like these guys. If they weren't there doing their thing, you wouldn't have planes landing on carriers.

I wish Canada had a aircraft carrier I would try and hop on a job there asap. I find the USA's navy and air force to be so interesting. Or to be able to work on black budget programs out in Nevada. I wishhhh. Thank you USA for always having Canadas back we all love you guys.

That guy hates his life. That's why he started to cry. I used to be a gear dog and its not rewarding at all. To be a gear dog is to be a modern day slave. The pay isn't worth it. They get paid the same as someone who sits on their asses for eight hours. That's why I got the F out. I get paid more going to school on the GI Bill than I did on the ship. Its inhumane.

You would think the backbone of these carriers would be payed alot more then a standard desk office job. Yea I agree they should be payed way more for this. People that do any hard hard labour IMO deserve way more pay then a guy sitting on his ass at a office. And then on top of that to work in one of the most dangerous environments away from home on a big boat yea they deserve at least 80k a year imo. Thank you for your service your county and crew members all will always appreciate you for what you did.

wow...things sure have changed since I was the cat/ag electrician on the shitty kitty 83-87. fancy gui's and computers. I bet rebuilding the CRO still sucks though.
