I had an Arris 852G for 13 years. I turned it on when it arrived and the first time, I turned it off it was when I replaced it. I was really pleased with Arris. I cannot say the same for Netgear. I had a CM1150 that died within a week and the replacement died within 5 months. I am once again with Arris but this time I have a S36 and TG9452 (voice included) that I love. Both I can reach 1GB and keep it up for over an hour downloading huge files (3TB data base files).

what else do you folks recommend that's comparable in price? I'm about to start a basic Xfinity plan for 300 Mbps upload/download speed, Wifi use only. I work from home doing Zoom meetings, some TV streaming...
@xlxcrossing993 жыл бұрын
Without knowing why you actually had download speed problems, I do not believe disproving the science of heat dissipation through passive cooling implementations by tearing open your router instead of troubleshooting your connected devices and/or returning it was the right move. Thermal paste does dry out far after being originally applied in the factory so simply looking at the chip to discern that "it was dry" wasn't a technically sound assertion either.
@henlinebrigs13463 жыл бұрын
I'm speechless and have no idea what to say. Other then the fact that replacing it did indeed solve my problem. And this isn't the first Arris piece of hardware I have seen fail. We had a router back in 2018 do the exact same thing. You ever felt this unit and how hot it gets when being utilized by more then one device plugged into it? It gets pretty damn hot. Passive cooling is never a good idea for any piece of electrical hardware. But it is cheap and with proper engineering does indeed work....to an extent. This however didn't seem to be one of those incidents.

A lot of these modem router combos have this these.. I think it's because they don't wanna put fans in them anymore because people complain of noise... Works well on some modem not on others.... ( depending on chip they use inside) I had a Netgear C7800 I return because it ran really hot and online reports on it dying "suddenly" dead give away overheat issue.... With different one that not run hot at all.. Although you shouldn't have open it All stuff like this has 1 yr warranty.. They either have to repair it or sent you a new one... minus shipping cost..

After you applied the thermal paste and reassembled the unit, did it work? I have the same issue and am considering trying to fix it. The only way I can keep a connection is to put the unit in an ice chest with ice (in a bag, so it doesn't get wet). If I don't do that, the unit turns off every 20 minutes.

The new thermal paste did not work. You could try a large heat sink and rubberbands or zipties.

Did you try as proof of concept temporarily locating it in a cooler area or placing an external fan next to it to cool to see if it would improve or maybe even fix the issue?

Oh yeah! Even took a thermal gun to the center of the TIM and was getting readings well into the 80° range, and that was with the cover removed. Granted, it's been over 4 years now, which is about all I remember, but I did indeed replace with a netgear nighthawk and installed a cooling fan onto that unit to ensure it stays cool as well.

Arris took over Motorola. I figured this to be a best to buy and could be lasting and dependable for a few years but I see issues in the product. No support I can not find a way to get ahold of Arris during this covid. Also your internet providers may not support your "owned" product during issues.
@Redneck_Ed6 ай бұрын
The history on those two brands is convoluted. Arris purchased Motorola Home around 2013 which included the SURFboard product line. Then a few years later, Motorola Mobility (Lenova) started selling Motorola branded cable modems again, but really they were made by a company called Minim. Current Motorola MB, MG, and MT modems are branding/royalties only as far as I know. All the engineering is from Minim.

I’ve been having the same connectivity problems. After watching this video, I put a small tornado fan next to the device. The fan is blowing into the device on its lowest speed setting. So far, the device has not dropped the connection since using this cooling method. As a added measure, I unplug the device when no one is home. I am also considering unplugging the device if it’s not being used.

My modem was sitting on my intertainment center with plenty of airflow and nothing surrounding it. The issue is heat. And this unit has no airflow or anything to keep cool air from circulating when it does become hot. An easy fix that frankly should be implemented into the unit.

You can of you would like. But be cautious as this unit was a pain in the ass to get apart.
