This film uses elements from a hypothesis known as “Block Time”. She doesn’t see “into the future”, or the past. She perceives all of her timeline at once, as a whole. She appears to be able to focus on a particular point in her timeline, giving her the illusion of “now”. Her “now” can be any point, or all in compassing, depending on how she is choosing to view it. At least that’s the way I see this, which is due to my exposure to the block time hypothesis.

Very underrated comment because that's what I thought after I finished the movie. I was somewhat lost in what I saw. The protagonist just received her all existance from the aliens and she is constantly confused as to where in her life, she is, in the present, if there is one. as if she's in a dream with no start or begining but she knows all the events. Maybe that is the burden of knowing the future and the destruction of free will. Once you give in to that, you have arrived maybe like the title Arrival

@@XIxwiteNIEKROxIX I agree. It’s always “now” regardless of “when” she is perceiving. I assume you’re referring to the “middle” as being her perception of “now”. It’s a very interesting concept. It is easy to see memories as a form of time travel. I know it feels like something I’m remembering just happened, even if it was 40 years ago. So it’s not too difficult to see future events the same way. Perhaps that could explain déjà vu. We simply can’t, or don’t realize we can, change the course of events. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How can one reconcile free will with the hypothesis of block time? A timeline assumes all events that have or will happen. Unless every past and future choice is already determined then the theory holds no ground. I believe in free will. ie I decide which choices I make and they can never be predetermined.

All competitive sports, all art, all creativity, all motivation to do anything that depends on being able to change circumstances or any amount of randomness. All gone. This of course assumes they have a choice to NOT do those things. Like Banks in the movie, she knew she would have a daughter with Hawkeye, she knew she would die young (and horribly), and she was utterly, completely, 100% unable to alter a single thing. No early testing, knowing what would come. No telling Hawkeye. She goes through with it, because she has no choice. So in that case, sure, people would still bet, people would still play sports... because that's what they did, and they are unable to alter their actions in the slightest, no more so than a character in a book can change their mind if you go back a page. The erasure of the illusion of free will.

I vaguely understood the twist that happened at the end before I watched Arrival, but the story was portrayed so well that I had forgotten it and was shocked all over again. This movie is amazing. Editing, performance, visuals. All top notch and underrated.

The answer to me seemed very clear after watching the movie. There were only two things humans were better at than the heptopods Killing: this breaks down into two possiblilities as to why the heptopods need our help they either need help killing an even more violent race than humans or they need to prevent humans from killing the heptopods 3000 years in the future. Algebra: the heptopods can't see end answers to problems they can't solve. As they can see time as a whole they can only see solutions to problems they eventually can solve. Think of seeing the back page of a math book with all the answers already completed. The heptopods know how to answer problems correctly but not truly solve the problems. Or they see all the steps of the problem being solved simultaneously, yet algebra requires sequential solving.

I've also wondered about why they would need our help in 3000 years' time. I don't think we need a sequel to explain that because this film is good as a standalone, but I still wonder. Like the comments here mentioned could it be due to a loss of their language? An alien threat? I loved that the underlying theme was the circular\eternal nature of time itself. As you said, Hannah being a palindrome, the flashbacks\flashforwards that Louise sees, and even the similarity of the language and the Ourobos, hinting at the never-ending cycle of it. This is such a beautiful film, on so many levels.

I thought it was interesting that Louise and her husbands falling out following Hannahs diognosis was down to the revelation that she knew about it before Hannah was conceved, but hid the fact.

I know this is probably a minority opinion, but I actually do think that knowing the future can allow one to change it - and I'm not convinced that Hannah's early death is truly inevitable. There's a scene in the film where Hannah asks Louise what it's called when both sides get something they want; Louise calls it a win-win, but Hannah is looking for an answer that's "more sciency". At first Louise brushes her off, but then we see in the present Ian is talking about the concept of a non zero-sum game. We return to the flashback, and now Louise knows the answer - a non zero sum game. It's certainly open to interpretation. It could just be that Louise happened to remember that term at that point. But it certainly looks like information being transmitted from past-Louise to future-Louise, and changing her actions. After all, if you couldn't use the information you received through the language, you'd be like Doctor Manhattan - knowing everything that's going to happen, but unable to change it. It's hard to see how that could be considered a useful 'weapon'. So, I choose to believe that the future is not fixed, and that what they're seeing at any given time is what the future would be if they did not act on the information received.

Interesting comment. Causality and inverted causality loop, that's how I viewed that scene. The recall of a memory by future Louise is normal causality, while past Louise remembering that future memory completes the loop. I think that it's no coincidence the Heptapods written language is loopy. It seems like even for them there are limits to their prognostic perceptions. They perceive certain events in the future and past as linked, but they can't see all the events that lead to certain outcomes. Meaning that it may be impossible to change some future events. If my idea is true though, it would mean that knowing the future in limited causality/inverted causality loops still leaves you in a mainly deterministic universe, unable to truly change the future. I think the film bears this idea out. Why would the Heptapods be here, and willingly sacrific Abbott (or was it Costello, Heptapods all look alike to me lol) if there was another way?

It kind of falls to the question then of is there such a thing as fate and choice? Because what this movie implies is that no matter what you’ll end up doing the same things. You have no choice and thus no free will. So you believe that you do have free will? Respectable. Though I fear that either there is only one timeline and thus everything is set or that should they actually do change it they’ll collapse time itself.

I agree. After watching it. I think there are scenerios that happened but then changed as the gifted alien language played out it's influence. The ships would have been attacked but just disappeared without retaliation proving the Chinese faction wrong and the world in disorder. The language would have been studied in depth by Banks who would develop the power of accessing future knowledge from herself. General Shang in regret, being aware of this uses this to send a message to himself to change his mind. In the instant he provides this Banks past is changes as she has the key information. A weapon where you can make changes in the future to affect the past. Rather than thinking of her of accessing the information from the future think of it as sending it back to the past as visions to change the present. In a sense the aliens are doing exactly the same thing by involving hummanity in their striuggle. They choose this scenerio and Abbott knows he must die but nevertheless is willing to sacrifice himself for his people.

They already saw the events and choose to go even though one dies. Because it must happen. Same as Amy Adam character still chooses to have her daughter even though she knows the future outcome of her young death. Its about appreciating and loving the moments/time you have now more because you know the results.

A truly superb movie. The pace was just right. While it is considering science-fiction, it’s a testament to the world as it stands. Tolerance and understanding are the tools needed to ensure we all get along together. Look to the past for the diplomacy of our ancestors trying to avoid conflict and we can enjoy a future that is conflict free. Language is the real barrier. Knowing a language is different from comprehending it. Let’s all just get along with one another.

I somehow missed this film upon release. My wife and I watched it last night and it sorta broke us in the best of ways. It reaffirmed a deep sense I believe we all share that there is more to this life, world and existence than we can see. Stanley Kubrick would have been proud of this one.

Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a thought provoking and emotional cerebral thriller, a mystery, like first contact itself. It's not about the Aliens, it's about us, mankind, our perceptions, how we view ourselves and deal with each other. Arrival along with Ryan Eslinger's 2018 film UFO are two of the best cinematic representations of what first contact could look like. Visually stunning with a phenomenal performance from Amy Adams, a great supporting cast, and a smart script make Arrival a not to miss film for all Science Fiction fans!

On surface level I want that too, but tbh I think the story was resolved in the end of the movie. The aliens did what they had to do and because time is circular, we can assume the Earthlings/humans will eventually help the heptapods. There wouldn’t be any conflict for a second film since we know what will happen due to the nature of the heltapod language.

I think a point made was that you could change the future, she chose to have her daughter knowing the husband would leave when she was diagnosed, and her daughter would die, she chose to treasure that time rather than choose different.

Did Abbot die from the explosion? In the film it says "Abbot is death process", not directly that it does from the implosion. This next argument mute be moot with the time processes in this universe, but personally I understood that "process" just meant he was unfit to continue the studying, and was dying, not dead. But with the heptapod language being ""timeless"", might mean that he just died.

Henry Ward-Raatikainen I’ve seen this theory that since the heptapods weren’t confined by time that even if they died that they were not actually dead. Like Abbot may have died but he is still able to go through his life in any order that he wants before his death, and is just restricted past his death point

they are still confined by time. how long they can live is not said. "death process" may simply be a language barrier. not all words have direct translations. though "death process" may be the same as the word "dying", i'm guessing it's just as literal of a translation as it could be without simplifying to how our language works. it's not speaking english to her after all. what i'm curious about is if you're able to perceive events in time that are not connected to your own experiences, or past your own lifespan. there isnt ever shown a "flash forward" vision of something she wasnt physically there for. If what you can see of time is bound by your ability to be in that moment would allude to the heptapods having extraordinarily long lifespans. or possibly technology/biology that allows them to transfer their consciousness to new bodies. i could be 100% wrong though lol.

@@tonyw1983 no I agree. I thought the same thing. Either the heptapods live 3,000 years or there some major technologies that allow them to see those events. The language just allows you to experience time non-linearly but that does not mean it allows you to teleport through space as well as time. You are restricted to your body in space but no single moment in time.

@@SchamaliDhali right, but if your body is not there at a specific time, then you cannot "experience" it regardless of your ability to perceive time non-linearly. i think long life spans is the probability. however, generationally, a future generation could pass back events from the future, up through the older generations to our present to deliver the warning. that would be rather unique!

Great video, BUT I would have liked it if you had touched on the relationship between Amy Adams's character and Jeremy Renner's character. They are Hannah's parents, but during the movie you are made to understand that they separated shortly after Hannah got sick. Amy Adam's character knew the Hanna would eventually get sick and die at a young age, BUT she kept that knowledge from Jeremy Renner's character so When Hannah got sick and Jeremy learned that Amy new all along that she would get sick and die at a young age he was upset that she never told him this would happen, had he been told of this he might have chosen to not have have a child with Amy, no adult if told, "Hey you are going to meet this woman and get married to her, the two of you are going to have a daughter and that daughter, in her late teens or very early twenties is going to die a slow and painful death, and your daughters death is going to tear you apart and you will never fully recover from her death" is going to say OK lets get married and make a baby so that we can both be torn apart by watching our beloved daughter slowly get sick and die over weeks/months!!! because that sounds like such fun! It was implied that Jeremy Renner's character was very upset with Amy's character for having never told him this and that is why they separated. Many people have children and many parents lose children at a young age, and it often times leads to the ending of the marriage due to the trauma that comes from losing a child. BUT there are many people who learn before they ever have children that they carry some kind of "genetic fault" that would cause them to pass that default gene onto their children should they ever chose to have a child, and so many/most of those people chose to adopt, or use a sperm/egg donor so that they can still be a parent but not pass a genetic default on to their children which will eventually lead to a slow and painful death for the child. Jeremy Renner's character felt betrayed by Amy's character for knowing what would happen and keeping quite about it. NOW one could say, well the future could not be changed, it had already been written in stone, BUT keeping something like that quiet and not letting your future spouse know is just dirty, it would be like knowing that you carry the "Huntington's Disease" gene and not telling your spouse and then you and your spouse begin having children and then when your child starts to display symptoms when they are 16 you say to your spouse "OH Yeah, BTW i knew I carried the Huntington's Disease Gene and, I was the one who passed the defect gene on to our child so now we get to watch our child slowly suffer and die and there is nothing either of us can do about it" How do you think most spouses would respond to that news?

Yeah. But would he had believed her after she told him? That's just like when a woman has girlfriends that tell her, "Chile, that man is no good; you need to dump him. I've seen him around town with other women." Then the woman might rationalize and be like "Oh. Maybe you misunderstood what you saw. Or, "Ok. So he has a wandering eye, but once he gets a taste of this, he won't be straying no more." People are told things outright a lot of the time, but we as individuals tend to think WE can be the one to change things and make an outcome different, even if the outcomes has been the same for thousands of other people in the same situation. Even though he met the heptapods himself, she was the only one that received the future revelation of their future together. So, yeah, he could believe that the aliens existed cuz he saw that with his own eyes. But having not been privy personally to the vision Amy's character had, he probably would have told her she was trippin'. But when you are in love with someone, you are willing to rail against the odds. So chances are, he would've have still procreated with her anyway. Even Amy's character was probably hoping that time was mutable and wasn't fixed & that her foreknowledge of her daughter's fate was given to her FOR the purpose of avoiding the tragedy of it by finding a cure or something.

A friend recommended this movie to me & I am glad he did. It was a VERY slow burning movie but well worth it. I loved the whole "Bootstrap Paradox" premise. And also how it asks if you knew something bad or such was going to happen (ie. her daughter's tragically short life) would you go through with it. Excellent movie for even those not a fan of Sci-fi...although I don't know how one could not be a fan of Sci-fi😁

The movie raise a question "is our life/fated predetermined" & if you know the future (experience it have memory of it) will you change it or will you let it happen. A better question is can you actually change your future even if you know it? What if all the decision that you make will still lead to that future. what if you cannot change anything & your attempt to change something ultimately lead to the same end. What if your choice does not matter cause your story already written & you are just going through it.

There's a point where that line of argument has to fall apart. If you see yourself dying of old age, and instantly drink cyanide before putting a pistol into your mouth and pulling the trigger, then it is doubtful that any force of inevitability could render that vision of the future true. Same thing with the protag. If she knew that she would survive long enough to have a daughter, that might well cause her to take a risk that would result in her death and her daughter never coming to pass. She might well have decided to sterilize herself so that she could not conceive children. Whatever would cause the inevitability of time would then have to spontaneously undo those changes in order for Hannah to be born. If this were the way the universe worked, there would inevitably be 'superhuman' individuals that would not be able to die before time was ready for them to die and would quickly learn this after repeatedly defying death in the most unorthodox of ways. In short, the system would be one that could be gamed and this would not require you to even know the future, just that things were inevitable and you could roll the dice as many times as you liked until you finally hit the snake eyes that was your real death.

I'm not into nihilism, I have my believe in God & Jesus Christ. I personally believe that life as we know it are beautiful things and have meaning. Although different ppl have diferent difinition of the meaning of life that mostly subjected to their upbringing & lifestyle. I have own my believe but i also understand the logic of science & its world view. I know that there are higher power & greater things out there that can make us seems insignificant. It same things like when we see ant beneath our feet and deem their life insignificant. Phylosophy & science are facinating idea that everyone should have the right to know. Do some reading, learn stuff build your knowledge & take in what useful to you. The worst things human can be is to be ignorant of all things other than their own view. Some ppl take their view to the extream & this is never a good thing.

Approaching it practically here, wouldn't the reason you saw yourself dying of old age or some incident is because of what you will do(in response to or not) and what happens after seeing it. It'd be like; "The reason I'm still alive now is because I have no balls to drink cyanide and shoot myself, I thought about it but..." or something like that. In that world where future viewing is possible, it will also have the governing mechanism for those events to be made possible, right? It will be part of their science and not be treated as supernatural(may take a while).
