SUBSCRIBE, LIKE & SHARE for a Fully Charged future! When Arrival went public in March 2021, despite not yet having a vehicle on the road, they were recognised as Britain's most 'valuable' company making founder Denis Sverdlov a billionaire after trading opened. Since our visit to Arrival last July we have been desperate to return to their R&D centre in Banbury to see how their electric van and bus designs have developed. Whilst still a prototype, the bus has come a long way with a flexible, modular design aimed at pleasing both the rider and the driver. The delivery van has been moderated to meet universal demands but has kept its ability to carry huge amounts of cargo with incredible visibility. What Arrival are doing is revolutionary. They are not just looking at the designs of the vehicles to ensure they are scalable, it's the way they plan to make them using robots within micro-factories that set them apart. With Arrival moving at speed towards production we cannot wait to see what they do next. * This was filmed prior to the public announcement about Arrival's relationship with Uber to develop electric ride-hailing Arrival Car! uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/uks... Certain kinds of electric vehicles make an insane amount of sense. Delivery vehicles being one of them given how predictable their daily routine is and the amount of fuel consumption they represent on the roads. Not just when they're driving but the stop/start nature of their route. Aside from that, EVs are going to be a lot quieter.

@@stumpyplank6092 Fuel Cells need more rare earth minerals than batteries (that actually contain little / none) - and fuel cells still need the electric motors (which do use some rare earth minerals). Pushing for HFCs also ignores the far higher efficiency losses and the fact that there's no supply network for hydrogen atm (and that the vast majority of hydrogen currently available is 'dirty'). Yes, there are scenarios where HFCs may make sense - but city busses / delivery trucks aren't it.
@christalbot2103 жыл бұрын
@@stumpyplank6092 I can see hydrogen for long haul semi's, but most fleet vehicles (including buses) can go through a day on one charge. Then all you have to do is plug them all in at the end of the day and let them recharge over night. While hydrogen has the advantage of allowing for longer distance traveling and shorter refuel times, it's also a great deal more expensive and is more complex than BEV's (more things to go wrong). All-in-all, if a BEV can do the job, you're better off with it than with hydrogen.
@logicalChimp3 жыл бұрын
@@stumpyplank6092 Sure, hydrogen charges faster than battery... but truck drivers are mandated by law to take a break every 4 hours... and that break is long enough to recharge the batteries for the vehicle as well as the driver. As for e.g. busses - typically they go back to depo too for a clean and change of driver... and based on my limited experience (of having lived near a demo) that's usuallty at least ~15 mins - which again would likely be long enough for a recharge (and if not, extending to 20 mins might be acceptable) There's also the consideration that EVs don't require storing large amounts of explosive fuel (yes, batteries can catch fire - although they're working on that - but they typically don't explode the way pressurised hydrogen can), don't require delivery drivers to deliver the fuel, and require far less maintenance (including the refueling infrastructure). There are other considerations too (energy efficiency, among others) - but they also fall on the side of EVs, in the main.
@bigbadjohn103 жыл бұрын
@@stumpyplank6092 HFC vehicles also need a battery because they cannot meet the peak demand, the fuel cell + gas storage is bulky and heavy and hydrogen is both inefficient and expensive, even when made by electrolysis, so it is really a none starter.

At 4:05 = "The bus needs to be compelling enough to get people on it". If I were still a user of mass transit, (buses, light rail, etc.), I would, obviously, ride the next vehicle that stops at my stop, no matter if it were electric or not. The people to sell these to would be the local transit companies. While I am all for electrification, personally, our local transit company, Tri-Met, (here in Portland , Oregon), has purchased several electric buses for trials, and have allocated wind turbine energy to power them exclusively. Hopefully this will be successful. At 18:50 = "We are in talks with many potential customers and energy suppliers around the world." I'm wondering if Arrival has spoken to Tesla about charging options? I can envision solar rooftops above UPS terminals/warehouses, for example, to charge the delivery vans and the Tesla Semis that will be used for long distance transport. This way, the local terminals can have Superchargers and Megachargers on site. It seems like a "match made in heaven" for both companies.

Love that bus. I want to go on it NOW :-) I liked the look of that original flat-front van though.. :-(

Looks like an airport bus in size. How did they cut weight considering the battery weight and the large glass areas. Like to see what were the priorities of a new from scratch bus design.

I think there is a huge market for a version of the van that is a mobile office. PV panels and a windows in the rear box, power sockets, 4G/5G connectivity, ‘office’ desk and chair, bookshelves and a couple of comfy chairs for meetings/reading. You can get up drive to a different pleasant place to work every day and then drive home.

I'm one of the camper people. My missus pointed out that the low load platform does mean it looks a bit too close to the ground. They'll need to raise the suspension a bit to optimise for campers rather than urban delivery vehicles (otherwise we'll be scraping very expensive batteries over rocks on some track in France). Still 2022 is fine. How big a battery can we have chaps ? :-)

Air suspension. Battery? Specify more body modules, longer wheelbase, more room for Batteries.

@@rogerstarkey5390 Exactly. And enormous layout flexibility, Not being able to drill through the floor will require some rethinking of how things are usually done though.

My issues with the van: - driver's window: doesn't look as though it goes down flush with the frame, eliminating the ability to hang your arm our the window or rest your elbow on it. - driver's seat: static seat. No reason why they couldn't shove a ISRI suspension seat in it - central display: isn't angled towards the driver. Why not? Doesn't make any sense, a passenger in delivery vehicles is rare. - the position of the seat belt makes no sense, it should be integrated into the seat - there's no side blinds The bus - removed a lot of buttons? What? You still need controls for doors, suspension, lighting, air con, drive chain (drive/reverse) desto sign. What are they claiming to have removed to make the cab simpler for drivers - retrofitting an existing bus: if you pull the engine and transmission out of a route bus there's enough room for at least 10 bodies. WHY would you out batteries on the roof - the limited footage of their prototype seems to reveal that their buses lack side and rear desto sign I don't know who these drivers they're asking to consult on their 'UX' improvements, but from what I see in this video, I wouldn't want to be stuck driving on of their vehicles all day.

This is one EV startup to watch. Also, Uber has partnered with Arrival so its drivers can design new car.

When I used to ride the bus in my hometown I was so annoyed by the loud sounds of the engine in the back that I ended up buying noise cancelling headphones specifically for the bus. So exciting that kids might not have to worry about that in the future.

To make a truly iconic car, the same philosophy of simplification is necessary. Give us the modern Model T Ford, VW Beetle, Deux Cheveau (2CV).

I love the way fully charged is basically embedded into this company. It shame it floated in the US. Anyway by the end of this month I'm hoping to own a very tiny, microscopic portion of this company.

Applied for a job here - Masters Degree in Physics and rejected within 30 seconds due to "wider recruitment practices". I politely asked what this meant and they said due to the volume of applicants they cannot clarify. A pity - they seemed decent!

Bobby, you had me fooled. I thought you really were a UPS delivery driver. JK 😜 I enjoyed this update covering the progress that ARRIVAL have made since your last visit. It's wonderful to see them working with customers to make it meet their needs as much as possible and continue the evolution. I've been watching. Thank you for creating!

This is the kind of vehicle that makes me want to find a use in my life for a van just so I can purchase this! I know a guy who's a freelance electrician and has decked out his own little van with custom livery and interior tool racks and lockers and it looks very smart and appeals to my practical side. Whereas I have a desk job which now means I'll be sitting here in my house for the rest of my life... with no use for a van!!

In the meanwhile the British premier decided that it is necessary to send British war ships towards Europe over a fishing rights dispute. I mean, isn't the whole idea behind politicians to prevent that stupid minor issues like fishing rights turn out into a war, especially when the other people are long standing allies? So just because of an administrative change people have to lose their whole livelihood, and we send out war ships to each other, for an administrative dispute, while in reality nothing really needs to change at all. It's just too stupid for words. Just grow up and make a settlement that works for all, that is what politicians are getting payed for.

What doesn’t come up very often is how much Arrival is also putting into intelligent software and data that will come from public transport in cities. More than half of their people are software engineers! I think they are going to be doing a lot around data and connectivity in public transport. And that is another major factor setting them apart from other bus EV companies (who are mostly just retrofitting diesel busses).

100% they should get together with Westfalia or Wellhouse to make a run of high quality campers. I'd live to see that. Also the use of composite materials worries me because they are extremely hard to recycle. Have they found a way to do this? Thoughts on 100% organic composite materials? I think if you are going to do your bit to save the world you might as well do it properly 👍
