Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree!! Epic song! Live version as well. They were outstanding live!!

At 17 minutes, I can understand why you might be hesitant to listen to Anesthetize live in Tilburg. But, you would miss out on one of the great performances of the past 20 years. Try one of the shorter Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson suggestions next, if you must. But, don’t forget Anesthetize live at Tilburg. Enjoy.

So glad to see you discovering my favorite band of all time! Steven Wilson is a genius at blending different influences and textures into a seamless whole that takes you on a journey both complex and approachable. Really hope to see you discover more from Porcupine Tree and his solo work. Their live performances are always incredible.

Best prog band since Pink Floyd. Steven Wilson is a genius and their musicianship is out of this world. Gavin Harrison is a beast on the drums. Wilson is also a technical wizard and his highly sough after, he has famously remixed albums by Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, Roxy Music, Rush, and many more.

One of my favourite Porcupine Tree songs, it genuinely gets better with each listen! Love the way it gradually builds layer upon layer until it explodes into that riff!

I miss this band. Wife and I saw them 4 times. Gavin Harrison on drums is just amazing. Hatesong from this same show is a good one. Anesthetize from Tilburg is classic. Steven Wilson still putting out incredible music but PT more in my wheelhouse.

You guys never cease to amaze me with your wonderfully eclectic selections. I only came upon the fact you'd done this today and was dumbstruck. (maybe it says something about your audience (?) but I love it). Thanks for your outside the box selections. It makes for such a refreshing change when so many reactions are all the same.

Thanks for the great reaction! Come down into the Porcupine Tree rabbit hole. They are the greatest band that virtually nobody has ever heard of. I found PT after I discovered their drummer, Gavin Harrison... just a few short months ago. Now I'm obsessed. Others have suggested Anesthetize live from Tilburg. Cheating the Polygraph, live from Tilburg also, is perhaps the quintessential PT track.

They are the best of the 90s/10s Neo prog rock bands and there is much much more where that came from but you should also check out the solo work of lead singer and writer of Porcupine trees music Steven Wilson. He is a genius composer across numerous genres and also a first class producer responsible for remixing and remastering many of the original prog rock bands material in particular that of Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull. For shorter Porcupine tree songs try Lazerus, or ‘Heart attack in a lay-by’ or ‘Start of something beautiful’ , ‘Trains’ or ‘collapse the light into earth’ for beautiful/Sad or ‘Deadwing’, ‘Blackest eyes’, or ‘Fear of a blank planet’ for more aggressive rocking out. The other longer classic tracks to listen to are ‘Anesthetize’, ‘Time Flies’, ‘Russia on ice’ and ‘Up the Downstair’, YES PLEASE ‘ Play them again’

Great to see you discovering Porcupine Tree! In concur with what some others have already said - Anesthetize live and Routine animated video... to begin with. Porcupine Tree was an amazing band and certainly rank among the very finest prog acts ever. And Steven Wilson - also known as "the hardest working man in prog" - has been a lead figure in a dozen other "side project" bands as well, plus has left his golden touch in yet a dozen other bands and musical projects. The album Hand. Cannot. Erase. containing the aforementioned song Routine is an outstanding album cover-to-cover and imho his best solo work. It's more accessible while retaining a prog-ish depth. But several other albums and songs are great too. For a shorter solo masterpiece - beautiful yet strong - give Pariah from the album To The Bone a go. Or for something simple but more familiar; maybe his cover of Abba's The Day Before You Came (which I've recommended for you before :-)).

If I remember correctly, on this song Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt plays the second solo on the studio version (the solos there are freaking out of this world!) I also highly recommend another song called "Russia on Ice", that's mind-blowingly good!
@levinskevich2180
@levinskevich2180 3 жыл бұрын
I was going to comment this, it was Mikael who did the solo that she said sounded like Santana. They clearly got him for a reason if they were looking for a smooth as hell solo, and Mikael gives it a specific feel with the patterns he chooses to play. They obviously didn't try to replicate it live and kinda did their own thing with it, but it sadly sounds lacking in comparison. I hope they check out some Opeth, watching people discover them is always great! Also good pick with Russia on Ice!

It really is a journey. Thanks for doing this one guys. I knew Mike would like the synths and the bass This song never feels long because it is changing so much. Hatesong (live) is another good one. Not as long. (About 9 min) Anesthetize (live) is also great but that one is pretty long. (About 17 min) Play it again? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Top of my playlist since the day I heard it ☺️☺️☺️

Somehow missed that you had done this one 🤷‍♂️. What a fantastic band they were and Steven Wilson is a musical genius and top prog producer as well. I thought Mike would dig this as soon as I saw it. Please do more from them and also Steven’s solo work since they split. They do remind me a bit like Floyd and I cannot give anybody a bigger compliment. PS love your ears for the influences, early Genesis was a great spot.

You should try his solo stuff, especially his Routine song because everyone that watches that video that has reacted to the animated music video to that song got tears in their eyes. Look up Steven Wilson's song Routine and look up reaction videos of that song just to see the emotions that it brings out to the people that have reacted to that animation video of Routine by Steven Wilson. About the 7 minute mark of the video you get what is going on in the video from the newspaper lying on the floor.

Steven is a very empathic writer who is capable of getting inside the heads of characters in his songs and bringing out raw emotions. The Album from which ‘Routine’ comes ‘Hand cannot erase’ is packed full of songs about difficult circumstances and therefore is packed full of emotion. Definitely one of the best albums of the last 10 years if not of all time.

You should immerse yourself in more obscure Porcupine Tree songs such as "Lips of Ashes" which has to do with necrophilia or "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled" which features a speech by the leader of the Heaven's Gate religious cult made before their mass suicide. a bit disturbing but the music is really soothing !!!

First album STEVEN WILSON ever bought was ANIMALS by PINK FLOYD. His catalogue of music from PORCUPINE TREE to his STEVEN WILSON band and soon back again to PT is awesome in its breadth and depth plus he has become the giant prog band’s choice to remix their back catalogue for 21st century GENTLE GIANT, KING CRIMSON and major albums for OPETH etc. He is extraordinary - and who doesn’t love music that brings together all the best of prog influences and creates something special. Suggest you also check out EAST COAST RACER by BIG BIG TRAIN a band that can take early Genesis and mix it with folk, brass band , symphonic elements and pure heart telling the stories of ordinary and extraordinary English people. In the case of EAST COAST RACER the men that built a world record breaking train of exquisite beauty.

Must be about time for you to delve back into the Steven Wilson universe again. I think that you have only done one song from this master of rock composition - with Porcupine trees track ‘Arriving somewhere but not here’. But which Steven should you try next, Space Prog Steven with Porcupine tree track, ‘The Sky moves sideways’, Trance prog Steven with Porcupine trees ‘Up the Downstair’, Classic Prog Steven with Porcupine Tree track ‘Don't hate me’, Acoustic Steven with Porcupine tree track ‘Last chance to evacuate planet earth before it is recycled’, Floyd like Steven with Porcupine trees ‘Dark Matter’, Metal Steven with Porcupine trees ‘Fear of a blank planet’, Angry Steven with Porcupine tree track ‘ Sleep Together’, Reflective Steven with Porcupine trees ‘Time Flies’, Jazz rock Steven with solo album work‘ Luminol’, Tugging on the heartstrings Steven with solo album track ‘Routine’, Pop rock Steven with Solo album track ‘ Permanating’ Social comment Steven with solo track ‘Refuge’ or perhaps Synth pop Steven with solo track ‘Personal Shopper’ This is a ridiculously long list which only scratches the surface of the mans genius and is aimed at demonstrating the breadth of his work across genres and styles. Every track is worth a listen and yet this list does not include the vast majority of the songs thought to be his best work………….. you probably received a wide range of suggestions because there is so much good stuff. Can only suggest that you Immerse yourselves and enjoy
