As soon as we finished this video, I realized that completely forgot to mention that Mikael Åkerfeldt sings backup and plays the 2nd guitar solo on this song. That’s my bad! Stick around for Judson’s beautiful piano rendition when the song ends. **If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse and they’re ready to get help, contact us via email.** thegreatmeasures@gmail.com

I think at this point it’s safe to say Steven Wilson is fairly well known. In my opinion, the most talented British performer that you haven’t heard of is Bruce Soord, main songwriter, singer, lyricist and guitar player for the band The Pineapple Thief. Gavin Harrison who plays drums for Porcupine Tree also plays for The Pineapple Thief. The Pineapple Thief has made 14 studio records, with the earlier offerings being a bit more experimental.

In 2008 I have the privilege of seeing these guys live and it was one heck of a show. Everyone has already said what you should check out next. It’s a little heavier than this. I’m just gonna go ahead and tell you that going in. But if you truly want a showcase of this band’s skills, definitely listen to anesthetize live. Also, another thing that I think I should mention it is a long song about 17 minutes, so you might want to have some popcorn on hand. What I heard it played live. I was infatuated by the end of it. I normally get up and dance to songs during live shows but with this one, I was absolutely glued to my seat, because of the amazing talent that was being displayed.

Have been thinking recently what you'd make of this song and boom! Great minds Great Measures. You've got so many great albums to sink your teeth into now they've piqued your interest. Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun and Deadwing are probably my favourite in that order, and as others have mentioned, Anesthetize off the first I mention should definitely be Judson's next taste. Feels almost mean to keep the whole albums from him as I'm almost certain he'll love them all. Beautiful little piano rendition at the end from ol' ear hands, and a little bit of quantum physics and specific mention of Richard Feynman?! If I were a lady, I'd be changing panties right now.

First time hearing this, but the beginning definitely gives me pink floyd vibes. 10:56 I was not expecting that, I was enjoying the flow and then it got aggressive and I'm not complaining! I'm a huge Opeth and radiohead fan and it's almost like a mix between them two (with a sprinkle of pink ployd). Nice soft guitar mini solo towards the end, great feel. I'm really digging this. Also how cool was Judson's quick interpretation and playthrough.

You can really tell, too, when you listen to a song like Hours of Wealth by Opeth. Which makes sense because the albums came out around the same time; Akerfeldt used a similar style, phrasing, etc. on both.

Steven Wilson - Drive Home with Guthrie Govan's solo of the ages is also a great one. I am once again asking for your support - I mean get him to listen to some Symphony X. :D Awakenings, or for an "easy listen" Paradise Lost (song). This album started as the soundtrack to a film project that didn't find a backer, so it was finished off as a standard rock record. Main songwriter Steven Wilson has/had a career fixation on death, ghosts, dead-end youth culture, etc., which this song and album (yes, released in 2005) slots into. Credit where credit is due -- that opening ambient thing was mainly Richard Barbieri, who isn't your typical 'twiddly synth' keys guy. He's much more into textures and sound color, more along the lines of Brian Eno rather than Jordan Rudess. And Judson hits on something important about P-Tree (and a lot of prog metal), in that there's usually not a lot of harmonic complexity or super tricky chords going on. It's often more about instrumental richness and depth. That might explain why P-Tree -- which was a Pink Floyd-sounding indie-psych group in their early days -- put so much work into that side of things when they moved into their prog-metal phase. BTW, the band name started as a joke between Steven Wilson and a buddy who were wanted to record some Syd Barrett-flavored psychedelic music. They thought it would be funny to adopt outrageous made up names, and the band name needed to be equally silly. As for where to go next, if you want to stick with the prog metal genre, the three albums to listen to are 'In Absentia', 'Deadwing', and 'Fear of a Blank Planet'. Their recent comeback album, 'Closure/Continuation', is also recommended, but those three albums are the core of that period.

I love Porcupine Tree. Twenty years ago I went from never having heard of the band to owning half a dozen albums in the space of a few weeks. The band is fronted by, and the brainchild of, Steven Wilson; along with his many solo releases they comprise some of the best music of the last 30 years - indeed, his/the band's discography runs to many hundreds of pages! I'd suggest ... Lads, top notch work again well done. Great video and scary talent on the keys by Mr J. I would suggest that the next time you stray into Steven Wilson territory , you could do a lot worse than to listen to "Drive Home" off his solo LP "The Raven that refused to sing"....I think most followers of this channel who know this song would agree that it is a stunning/mesmerizing song with one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, I.S.Y.N. (Thank you Mr G. Govan Esq) ...just a thought.

I was hoping that you guys would do some PT at some point. I haven't watched through to the end yet, so I'm looking forward to Judson's opinion. You should have him listen to something from one of Steven Wilson's solo albums, like Luminol or Ancestral.

Pretty sure I heard Wilson mention the song alluded to the transition between adolescence and adulthood: teenager thought becoming an adult would be like such-and-such, but became an adult and it was quite different. Then just played on that theme of “not what you expected”

Great band, seen them live twice, they were incredible & had top-notch crystal clear live sound. Stupid Dream (1999) is a great starting point to begin going through their albums off channel. For a next reaction I recommend Hatesong, from their Arriving somewhere... Deadwing Tour concert (Filmed at the Park West, Chicago, USA, 11-12th October 2005).

It is concluded that Steven Wilson when decided to give the name for the band opted for the name Porcupine because of that parable, I believe that in his youth he feel like a porcupine because he want to do what he wants in music, and not what others want

Judson would probably really like something from "Agalloch". Their first album, Pale Folklore (1999) is amazing.
