In arrow a lot of people felt represented in Felicity and wanting her to end up with Olliver, starting a capaing against Laurel, they hated not only the character, but also the actress (Katie Cassidy), insulting her on the social media, writting letters to the showrunners asking to kill Laurel, sending her photos of dead birds when the writers finally listened to them and killed the character, etc. And even nowadays they still hate Katie, laughing at her divorce, her hypothetical facial surgeries and so much more

@@mat_kinasa2947 Granted I don't know how true this is, but it sounds like Guggenheim did not have the greatest relationship with Cassidy, for what reason and what exactly the problem was seems to be unknown. But from what I've read and heard over the years and an article quite recently, while the shippers made them more confident about daring to put them together. Guggenheim had no intention of having Oliver and Laurel get back together after season 1. He wanted them to hook up to create conflict with Tommy but also so that both Oliver and Laurel would feel guilty about being together after Tommy died. It seemed Stephen and Emily just really hit it off to such an extent that in the back of his mind Guggenheim hoped that people would accept Felicity as a part of the team and balance out the show to not just be brooding dark all the time. I mean I get why the hired Cassidy as Laurel, in the comics she is able to keep up with Quipster Queen, but since they were making Oliver more into Bruce Wayne they cast her to match Oliver. But then regretting making them both so much darker because Laurel could make Oliver push himself, just not both challenge, in some areas outsmart and also make some room for light and fun in his life. So felicity sort of became the answer to a problem they felt they had created for themselves. Literally everone who was watching the show live could tell Amell wasn't able to keep it together, I'm sure there was a lot of unusable material during her scenes. Given he was still smiling when he wasn't supposed to and he looked so smitten that I'm pretty sure if he wasn't married at the time. They would have dated for a year or two, broken up and she would have gotten killed off depending on how their relationship had turned out after the honeymoon phase. Or they would have at least hooked up casually. Happens all the time and no wonder when you spend up to 16 hours a day for up to 9 months of the year with mostly the same cast, and then the crew.

Shipping ruins any film, book, show game and so on series once the ones in charge start pandering to shippers. People who are into good romance want characters who fit as a couple and whose relationships are built up and developed with any sex that happens being a bonus. Shippers just want any 2 randoms to have sex whether it makes sense or not or even if they don't know each other. The sex itself is all they care about and they think relationships built on it but nothing else are love.

Every other character whether they were men or women, heroes or villains, vigilantes or not was put down to prop Felicity up. Oliver himself, Diggle who in the later seasons just existed to talk about serving in Afghanistan and being an Olicity cheerleader, Laurel whose death was pandering to the crazies who saw her as a threat to their self insert hacker, Sara was the badass Olicters deluded themselves Smoak was. Hell even though Nyssa was a lesbian and her and Oliver's marriage was forced by Ra's her calling Oliver husband even jokingly had shippers foaming at the mouth with rage.

But with the way Olicity fangirls act hating any character that's not Felicity and any couple that's not Olicity, thinking killing Stephen Amell's wife and kids will force him to date Emily Bett Rickards, they can't give a single reason why they like Felicity as a character or the couple and just say sappy nonsensical things about Felicity being Oliver's "light." They also threaten to kill people who don't like the Felicity character or the Olicity ship. With behaviour like that they'll probably never get a man.

You were so spot on. It's such a shame what the writers did to E1 Laurel, I really loved her and gave all the blame to where it deserved, the writers and show runners. Katie Cassidy loved Laurel Lance and did everything she could to honor that character but for whatever reason, the powers that be screwed her over from day one. Seeing as we're now into S7, I'd love to see the creator's opinion on E2 Laurel/Black Siren's redemption arc. The character is one of the highlights of the season and has carved out her own character outside of E1 Laurel.

Honestly, how much disservice they did to Arrow, because the people behind it wanted to make it as Batman-like as possible. Currently on Season 6 myself and I think I agree with all your points except for Black Siren to some extent. The treatment of Laurel Lance from beginning up until the point I am at is just horrendous to the point I almost gave up on Arrow post-S4. Though I don't think she fully redeems the show, adding Black Siren adds the opportunity to not only redeem the villain, but make up for the foolish choice of killing her off of a ship in the first place. I agreed with everything but the imaginary oppression stuff. A true comic fan would know that many comics were metaphors for real life discrimination and persecution that was happening at the time. And original Laurel was always fighting for the poor and economically disadvantaged people from The Glades. But yea Arrow definitely got too PC with some of the characters later on.

The worst thing was when Laurel got killed off Olicity fans were celebrating, saying shit like "Bye bye birdie." If it had been Felicity who Darhk stabbed with the arrow they'd have gone insane and ranted about how the showrunners were sexist pigs who'd "murdered" their precious Felicity who some of them actually believe is a real person given how they treated the actress like she was the character. When you ask Olicity fans why Oliver and Felicity are a good couple they can't tell you and instead resort to sappy pretentious shit about how Felicity is Oliver's "light" and claiming she stopped him killing criminals even though he stopped killing to honour Tommy. Olicity fans can't tell you what Oliver and Felicity have in common or anything.

I actually like E2 Laurel and her redemption arc. But I agree, they should NEVER had killed her of. The writers could have done several things that would have improved the show: First, Wild Cat should have stuck around much longer than just a handful of episodes. Second, they should never had brought back Sara Lance. Third, they should have written out Felicity in season 3 and Diggle in season 4. By the end of season 4 the new trio would be: Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Arsenal. Fourth, Laurel should have had her own nemesis: a new version of Huntress, who would take the place of Artemis and E2 Laurel in season 5. Maybe they could have hired the same actress who played Dinah Drake for that role. With these changes the show would probably have been much better than it was, even though I loved season 5 and season 8, and parts of season 6 and season 7.

You know I've had the fantasy that the Earth 2 Laurel could actually, take it upon herself to give her life, to have Laurel's soul ressurected back into her body, understanding that team arrow need's that humanising element that she lacks, and it's possible that the character traits of Black Siren prove that she has the potential to be a fighter, and truely secure and in-tune with this, insane, strange and violent side of life, and be the "The Black Canary", that we know and that she is supposed to be. Um absolutely not. And suggesting that (how would they even do that?) will only prove the point that Black Siren on Earth-1 will always and only live in E1 Laurel's shadow. Which would be such a waste and another example of the writers disrespecting Laurel as a character. They already disrespected E1 Laurel, they don''t need to do the exact same thing with E2 Laurel just cause she's on Earth-1. She's her own character, there's no valid reason to take that from her.

I thought Laurel was a great character. I loved her arc, but I was disappointed by how it felt like she got pushed aside from a lead character to a side character. Her death was significant, and LL2 was an interesting return, but it never felt like she got the lead role she deserved (and yes, I preferred her to Felicity Smoak, sorry). That said, I loved Sara Lance's character in Legends, one of the few on screen marriages I actually cared about. Damn, this isn't the first time I wish the fandom had kept out of it.

Sure there could be different versions of Oliver and Dinah but it's expected that they would end up together. Oh and Laurel brought her back to life with little to no resources accept Lazarus pit but here Sara has everything she could possibly need at her finger tips to get her sister back and she refuses to get her sister back.

I wanted to admit something that will get me crucified. I was in my late teens and early 20s when the show was running and I never read the comics. So I actually liked Olicity (which was actually written well in the last two seasons) AND Black Siren. I've always been a sucker for the savvy guy/energetic girl dynamic. And also I had a diehard crush on her. I was insulted once for having that opinion and think I'm a toxic asshole because unfortunately, every fandom has a toxic faction amongst it. The writers shouldn't have hated Laurel. She was a wonderful character and she had a big impact on her friends' lives, especially Sara since Laurel was the one who set her on the path to being a hero and join the Legends, setting in motion the entire Legends of Tomorrow series that eventually resulted in Sara being captain of the Waverider and eventually marrying Ava. Just because Laurel had her conflicts with Oliver doesn't justify the writers hating her since 1) everyone has been in Laurel's situation at some point in their lives and 2) it was understandable for Laurel to feel unappreciated since Oliver acted horribly towards her when they were together and even after they broke up, and he never accepted her as an equal on the team. Plus, she had done nothing to deserve being killed off for good and the writers are being cruel treating her like her death was well-deserved. I even prefer Laurel over Black Siren, who was a villain for most of the show and had a hard time redeeming herself even if she did eventually. The original Laurel was far better than Black Siren since unlike her Earth-2 counterpart, she never would have turned evil, started killing people or worked for bad guys. Keep in mind that what set Earth-2 Laurel on the path to being Black Siren was her father's death, but the original Laurel mourned her sister's death twice and was inspired to be a hero instead. Laurel wouldn't even be dead in the first place if Team Arrow had just destroyed the Khushu idol instead of keeping it KNOWING it was going to be stolen, and I still think OG Laurel was the one Oliver should have brought back when he recreated the multiverse

I actually think her season 3 in becoming the pseudo-Black Canary was handled well. One thing that the original Laurel had was grit and tenacity. S3 Laurel had this and it could have been more with her being the one person to call out Oliver's hypocrisy in the back half of the season or the early half of the next season - only if they toned down Felicity. I never hated Laurel but I disliked Felicity after S2. You could see her getting beat up early on and had to endure all of that including many people telling her she shouldn't be out there. She was a self-starter and she even carried those episodes where Oliver was supposed to have died. I think in the end, they had to kill Earth 1 Laurel so they can take on the OG storyline with Earth 2 Laurel truly taking the Black Canary mantle as a metahuman. The writers really wrote themselves in a corner first with bringing Felicity into the spotlight and have her in a long relationship with Oliver then wrote themselves into a near dead end when they introduced Dinah. Dinah was such a waste of a Canary character and her character could have just been another hero/metahuman to join the team instead. (I'm not sure but I read somewhere that the actress that played Laurel grew tired of the hatred around season 4 and was likely not gonna return for the show hence they wrote in Dinah but ultimately returned in midseason of season 5.) After midseason 5 where she returned as a villain then ultimately become an antihero then a hero was the perfect arc for her in the series. If only they could have done this way earlier in the show and reduced Felicity's role instead of hers, Laurel would have carried the show together with Oliver.

Laurel just wasn't well written at all. The actress did a fine job, but after Season 1, it really felt like the writers were constantly trying to justify her being on the show. They kept giving her subplots and arcs that distracted from the rest of the story, and when she tries to take on the mantle of Black Canary, it's just ridiculous. Oliver spent, as he calls it, "five years in hell", in which time he was toughened up and eventually became the Arrow. Sara had a similar experience, so it makes sense in-universe for them to throw themselves at street thugs; after all, they have the skill to make up for it. Even Diggle, who had experience in the military, was usually just Oliver's backup and knew his own limits. There was never any point where I felt like Laurel could really stand on her own two feet. Not to mention her emotional fragility. This girl (who apparently dealt with her parents' divorce and the deaths of her sister and boyfriend by going to law school) completely breaks at every sign of trouble. She doesn't have the internal strength that someone like the Black Canary needs to have, and she never really develops it, because everything she does from seasons 2-4 are just unhealthy coping mechanisms. I don't know how we were supposed to like her. That wasn't the worst of it, though. Laurel was inconsistent and a total hypocrite. She would berate Oliver for doing something foolish or for taking things too far, but when Oliver points out that Laurel has been crossing lines, she has an obnoxious sense of self-righteousness. Maybe Dinah Lance was supposed to be Oliver Queen's true love, but this incarnation of Laurel didn't fit on Team Arrow. Killing her off was the best thing they did for her character, but even after she left, people kept asking each other, "What would Laurel do?" It's hilarious, because Laurel was nothing but self-righteous, getting herself into trouble and pretending that she was in the right for doing so.

I will be honest I never saw what your saying in this video in the first few season of the show right where she came back though when she was evil. Thats the type of canary I wanted to see the strong, independent, and charismatic character which in comic is what she really is. Also if the actress acted like she did as the evil laurel in the beginning but good then i think thing could stay "comic book accurate". And the arrow and black canary could had been in the cw show. The black Canary from the comics was more of laurel sister(Sarah). The problem is that the writers made a second character and that ruin the story for Oliver to be with laurel. The fan girls are not the problem when two actors playing really well their characters and end up having chemistry if you think other wise then that's on you. Freak I prefer the actress playing Laurel then the character they made in arrow of her. Honestly I just never liked the character since season 1. I tried, but nothing could be done. Part of it is the writing, another part is the acting...I'm also really tired of people blaming everyone one else (other female characters, other female actresses, etc.) for the failing of Laurel Lance. I liked Sara and Felicity better on their first appearance than Laurel even though they are completely different characters from one another. Their popularity should stop being considered a bad thing because Laurel wasn't liked. I even liked the huntress better. Even if Sara and Felicity would not have been in the show I would not have liked Laurel, I would of find someone else to like. The only thing I do agree on is the fact that they should not have killed her. They should of make her leave when she met Barbara Gordon and start a Birds of Prey thing, honoring her legacy as a hero. As much as I did not like Laurel and her journey was way too rushed to be credible, I like BC and the death seemed a step to far and was disrespectful.

This video is strange: you put 3 main characters who are responsible for Laurel's success as BC - on one hand the writers and the audience who you portray as the villains but on the other Laurel herself who despite all the obstacles managed to shine?! Laurel is fictional she is not responsible for her deeds, it's the writers. I'm going to say something unbelievably harsh but it has to be said; part of the reason why Sara Lance was better received than Laurel is because of the actress playing her and this is straight from Wikipedia - Lotz is a martial artist, training in Taekwondo, Wushu, Krav Maga, Arnis and Muay Thai. She is also a practitioner of parkour and tricking. No disrespect to Katie Cassidy when you are an accomplished martial artist to begin with, that raises the bar so much for a show as dynamic as Arrow. The inconsistency and the lack of personal growth is what truly doomed the Lance family from Quentin all the way down to Sara., Quentin had no shortage of opportunities to kill Oliver outright yet somehow not until seasons 3 and 4 does the seriousness of the grudge really take root? That's like assaulting a fellow driver for denting your vehicle three or four years after the event. As far as it goes with Felicity, Felicity at her worst is more enjoyable than Laurel at her worst and that is a credit to the actress for following the example of the actor playing John Diggle. Turning a one dimensional simple character into a three dimensional respectable, lovable one. Oliver didn't want the same fate that befell Sara to happen to Laurel. Let's be honest, there is NO WAY and I mean ABSOLUTELY NO WAY IN HELL Oliver and Laurel could ever have ended up together. Not with that level of history.

A toxic backstory with the main character doesn't make either characters unlikeable, especially when Laurel was the far more wronged one in the relationship. A costume or a superpower doesn't make you a worthy character either if the person behind the mask is irrelevant to the story they're trying to tell. Laurel knew him before the island but it didn't mean she knew him after the island. Guess who did, a non comic canon character who was there from the pilot and a character who was only a random name in the firestorm comics, but both became the show's pillar characters with Oliver because they became his true partners. Don't try to compete with that to make Laurel's toxic high school romance with him a key component of the show, especially when she had to find out his secrets two seasons later from someone else.
