Arrow Video 50% Off Sale Haul | August 2023

If you haven't heard, Barnes & Noble is having a 50% off Arrow Video Sale all month long in August! I'm definitely more of an Arrow fan. My Criterion collection pales in comparison. From 80s horror to noir to Spaghetti Westerns. They gone off the boil in the last year but in the last few months have knocked it out of the park. Wow I'm using an Americanism 😊. You should try Indicator. I think you'd like them.

Glad to see some Arrow collectors here. I have a handful of Indicator releases, primarily the Harryhausen boxsets which I love. It's tough to collect their stuff with the cost of international shipping, but I've been really impressed with the quality of their releases so far

OrbitDVD solves the shipping issue. Also, if you shop during a sale and factor in the shipping each title is maybe $13 and shipping isn't that bad.

Go back for more!! Huge Arrow (Academy and Video) fan and collector. I'd recommend getting Spider Baby of course but it may be too strange for your tastes. Hey, it's worth a try because it's the best. I'd also recommend The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and to Jump in the Sammo Hung pool and grab something with him in it. Maybe one with Jackie Chan as well and finally The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch. Very good b&w 60's Japanese movie. So many more to recommend out could get out of hand quickly. For Academy I'd recommend The Major and the Minor with Ray Milland and Ginger Rogers and very obvious one for everyone, you may have even seen it, The Apartment with Jack Lemmon. Also, very cool John picked up Unman, Wittering and Zigo. I picked it up as well and wanted to recommend it but I haven't seen it because it's a very new release. It actually hasn't even been officially released yet. Comes out the 22nd.

I'm here in the UK and Arrow is a staple diet for all us UK collectors I love Criterion but also an Arrow fan - recently got Waterworld 4K, Silent Running 4K, The Last Emporer 4K, The Naked Lunch 4K, Videodrome 4K, Fighting Back Bluray (US only) and the US only Arrow 4K Hugo we don't have Barnes and Noble here but HMV (our local retailer) has regular 50% off Arrow sales. got the Tremors 4K box set a few years back. Mallrats is good fun.

I’ve recently been gravitating more toward the UK only Arrow titles, but it costs so much to ship things over here. I usually just have to hope I get lucky on eBay. Maybe you can clear something up for me. Is Arrow Academy still around? And if so, is it only in the UK? I like a lot of the stuff they’ve put out, but I’ve only ever seen their stuff on eBay.

I picked up true romance 4k. Really cool booklet and posters/postcards. It’s also a great action movie with Tarantino dialogue/characters. I also got Donnie darko 4k and crimson peak. Donnie darko is great and I’m excited to watch Crimson Peak for the first time! Unfortunately the case came busted 😅 That’s what I get for not having a barnes and noble near me haha. The Hugo 4k looks great and I might get sixteen candles, pitch black, and tremors before the months over

Glad to see some Arrow collectors here. I've got the Crimson Peak LE box set from arrow. It's one of the coolest pieces in my collection. I enjoyed the film too!

Hugo is a great pickup! I teach film and always have my students learn about Georges Melies at the beginning of the class (and then we watch "A Trip to the Moon"). When I saw Hugo for the first time, I couldn't believe what it was about. Not such a fan of Arrow (I have lots of Criterions), but I do really love their release of 12 Monkeys. Might consider picking up Sleep because I really like John's recommendations (and yours and Grace's). Started watching the channel a few weeks ago and I love it!

@FilmsByColor Yeah, I enjoy them all, to be honest, especially the first 3. The sequels got a lot of hate when they first came out because critics thought that there shouldn't be a sequel to Psycho. Aarow UK has a pretty dope boost coming out soon. All 4 movies in 4k for like 55 bucks. I'm definitely getting it.

Psycho 3 is a typical slasher from the 80s. Norman Bates is Jason and Bates Motel is Camp Crystal Lake.

They didn’t exactly make it that clear on the Hugo 4k but the 1st Blu-ray Disc has the 3D version. Nice that they included 3 discs for the same price that they charge a 1 disc UHD version

Hi, DJ! I bought my first Arrow at Barnes & Noble a week or so ago, and it was the "Hugo" Blu-ray. My local B&N did have one 4K copy, but I don't have a 4K player. I saw "Hugo" in the theater during its initial release and loved it. Like you, I loved how the film dealt with Melies' story. I bought the "Hugo" DVD when it first came out, but I am really impressed by the comprehensive list of extras on the Arrow release. Finally, this is off topic, but I wonder if John knows whether TCM is considering publishing a third volume of its "The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies" books. Thanks, and take care!

The idea for a third book has been tossed around for several years, but I do know there's no plan for it right now. That being said, the full list of films shown on the Essentials franchise - which is the prerequisite for being selected for the book - is listed in the back of Vol. 2, if you want to peruse it.

I live in Middletown Township, NJ, which is where the Quick-stop is from Kevin smith's Clerks. There's also a lot of other filming locations around here as well, such as St. James Church in Red Bank, NJ, which is in Dogma.

Arrow has been a decent boutique source for my collecting. This is not completely Arrow related but I don't know when I'll be able to bring it up. Yesterday I returned from my yearly comic con trip. Usually the day before the event I acquire some comics and movies at various stores. I'll only mention the movies I got. Most of my additions were Hammer Horror related. So now my collection of their filmography has gone up from 15 titles to 32. The two non Hammer films I got were the original Wicker Man and The House That Dripped Blood. House That Dripped Blood was from a company called Amicus who were sort of a competitor to Hammer. They did similar type of subjects, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing worked on their films and this particular film was a Lee and Cushing collaboration. I'm glad I managed to get a decent amount for a specific sub-section of my movie collection. But there's still a ways to go.

@@FilmsByColor I need to be more specific about something. The Hammer titles are spread out among multiple different labels (Indicator, Studio Canal, etc). To my knowledge only one is an Arrow release. That being the 1958 Hound of Baskerville. But I do have a fair amount of films from the Arrow line. I can’t make any Arrow related suggestions due to the differences between our countries makes releases inconsistent. But I will say I’m hoping to get the Psycho collection when it comes out. I never picked up the 60th anniversary release of the original and this new release will include the same material. And I never owned the sequels before so this will be worth it.

As far as Arrow reccomendations go, sticking to their US releases, I would reccomend The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, which is of the most insane films to come out of hong kong. They also have a great release of Terry Gilliams 12 Monkeys.

Hamilton Book has a bunch of Arrow titles for 11.99 and under including Sleep. They have Robert Altman’s Gosford Park for only 9.99.
