Lost an elk shooting a 530 grain arrow with slick tricks at 40 yards. Hit high and left broadside quartering down and I believe I hit the shoulder. (75#, 29,5 draw). Most likely I hit some grass directly in front of me with how fast everything occurred. Considering bumping up to 650 grains with a single bevel next hunt.

Good video. Great content. I just switched to a little lighter arrow for elk this year. Went from 470 to 436. 12 percent foc. It’s going 284 feet per second at 68 pounds. If I crank it down to 72 I’m sure I’d be at around 290. Hoping to find an eastern Oregon bull to test her out this year. Shot placement above all. Above speed or arrow weight. Thanks for the video.

The perfect arrow is up to the person using it. We use what works best us and we don't say well that or that arrow is bad. I myself am a 27"DL @ 73# and shoot a 650gr to 700gr arrow with fixed blade broadheads. Why? Because I don't shoot at game past 50 yards and this setup has always worked for me. Do I think lighter arrows are junk? No. Because I have witnessed other hunters having success with them. Like I said Use what is best (Comfortable) for you. Every hunter is different. Thank you for pointing that each hunter has their own setup that works for them.

Great video. I have heard too many times peoples opinions to different gear without really their thoughts behind why they make the recommendations. Arrow selection is one of those areas, as long as you are in safe tolerances (spine for example), that it is fun to play with different setups.

I’m So torn between 450 or 475 for an all around arrow build. I hunt mostly whitetail, but occasionally a western trip for antelope or hopefully elk....67 lbs. / 29”
@AlphaBowhunting3 жыл бұрын
Honestly you won't notice much difference between them. I would probably lean towards the 475 as an all around build
@StraightWayOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@AlphaBowhunting thx. I’m leaning that way because of the upgrade in component integrity - stainless steel (475) v. aluminum (450).

I've killed elk with a lot of different arrow weights. Cow,at 35 yards 410gr. 100 gr. Fixed. Pass through ribs. 450gr 100 gr. Fixed 40 yard 1hole . 465 gr. 100 gr. Fixed 45 yes 1/4 ing away. GREAT topic guys!! If you watch the ranch ferry, he's big on FOC and the Ashbury theory.

28.5" draw 80lbs Taw of 706 with the 19 % foc with a 125 grain single bevel samurai overkill by grizzly stik out front
@TheWVgoodguy223 жыл бұрын
Discussing arrow weight is similar to talking about rifle calibers/cartridges as well as the best bullet weight and construction. One could even talk about vehicles too. It is all about figuring out what each individual bow and archer 🏹 shoots best. As well as what is most effective on the game you are after.
@clintwhitley95543 жыл бұрын
When you are referring to a preferred arrow weight in this video are you including what the field point or broadhead would weigh? I would assume so because that would put me with a 32" draw, 60# setup, 300 spine TKO's, 75g inserts and a 100g field point at 496.5 Making me think my next bow is going to have 70# limbs so I can make those things screaming fast. The only issue I'm seeing is that I'm not paper tuning very well. Maybe its possible the arrow isn't stiff enough even though that's the stiffest arrow Victory makes...?
@jackbuendgen3893 жыл бұрын
Could you guys do an arrow video for short draw adult archers? I am an adult male with a 26 inch draw @70 pounds. Every time I watch an arrow video my draw gets lumped in with kids and women's set ups.
@dakota_bowhunter3 жыл бұрын
X impact 300 spine, Valkyrie 180 grain broadheads. You’d run roughly 430 grains with 19 foc.

What do you find to be the best balance between speed and fixed blade broadhead flight? I have heard 270-280 FPS is the sweet spot.
@AlphaBowhunting3 жыл бұрын
I would say all things become more critical at 290 plus. Still so many variables but under 290 is doable
@royhoglund13223 жыл бұрын
It would be good if you could touch on shorter draw length and lower poundage shooters.

Most of the guys seem to be in the 450-550 range for elk. Would you guys think that is similar for Alaskan moose as well or would you even bump that up some more?

Us short draw guys need to get a little more creative with out set ups. Would love to have the problem of having a 30 inch draw! But for now with a 27.5 inch draw its a 482 gr arrow at 262 fps for both Whitetail and Elk for me. Fixed Broadhead for both.
