Trouble with bikes going through red lights is when road drivers see cyclists go through they may assume the light is green. You know like when there are multiple lights for left right straight on etc and the driver is maybe just following traffic and not 100% looking at the lights.

To be fair tho if a light meant for crossing only not to control traffic flow or junctions is red and no ones at the crossing you should be allowed to go through it after stopping and confirming no one is approaching to cross, come to plenty of lights red where people have pressed to cross and went because they seen a gap and now cars have to wait at a crossing no one is using, it’s a minor annoyance I know but it makes sense, well to me it does anyway.

We need to live in a world where ecological friendly transport is convenient, safe and free from tyranny; no number-plates, no helmet mandates as their safety is a bit overrated, no extra insurance premiums, and no forced cycle-lanes. How can we argue against the car lobbys calls for regulated cycling when so many cyclists are out there proving the need for tougher regulation? Ultimately as cyclists we all end up paying the price of those ignorant people who are proving that as a whole we can't be trusted to use the roads safely and responsibly. Don't we have enough to worry about with all those people in metal boxes who believe that running us off the roads is in someway virtuous? I'd like to see more like you in a cycling community showing by example why cycling is important and healthy for society as a whole. I feel your frustration too.

Road tax was abolished several decades ago. And the tax you drivers pay doesn't fund roads. It's an income stream that can be spent on emergency services, public transport, rubbish collection etc. Indeed they can spend it on roads if they want to, but it's not for that specific purpose. And insurance? Come on.. This day and age we're trying to get people out of their cars and onto their bikes, not the other way round. Plus a bicycle is powered by the person riding it and not a large engine. Why should they be obliged to pay for insurance? By the way, I don't consider myself a "cyclist". If you're gonna respond then don't go thinking I'm one of them.

bigblokeonabike my lights aren't as bright as the xenon lights or the new LED's on newer cars. So shouldn't I be allowed flashing lights by your rationale? Mopeds aren't as big nor bright as cars they aren't allowed strobing lights. I agree they should be pointed down but if they are headlamps then cyclists should be required to look down at all times. On city streets not a big deal but out side the city they are dangerous and unnecessary.

+just to say this moped lights would tend to be bigger and more noticeable than bicycle lights - simply because they don't need to be super light and have small rechargeable batteries as cycle lights do. Still, an argument could be made for mopeds to have flashing lights. I would agree that flashing lights on country roads don't make much sense. Flashing is "to be seen". Steady lights are "to see". Because of this I switch to steady lights when navigating narrow dark parts of my route. I have a helmet mounted light during the winter. When around other people I am careful not to shine it in their face or directly at motorists.

The number of cyclists passing through reds was more than those that stopped. Saying that only the minority do it is a well worn excuse rarely backed up by evidence. In my experience ALL cyclists will do it at some point, most (probably?) will do it on multiple occasions, and a lesser (but significant) number will always do it. Sorry but 15 Traffic violations in just 4m is almost beyond belief. To put it in context, if this happens everywhere (which it does) then cyclists comitting Road Traffic offences are by far and wide the most significant cause of offences on the road, by a factor of 50 at least. The level of harm caused and potential to be caused is far higher for a 2 tonne hunk of metal travelling at 20mph+ compared to 100kg of mass flying at the same speed, that's why we take motor vehicle violations as far more serious. Also take into account that a motorist has an easier life when it comes to start stopping, they just have to push a pedal whereas a cyclist actually has to put down effort. And as humans being lazy, naturally you're going to get the lazy guys disobeying the rules, I imagine it would be no different if you put all motorists on bikes.

When sport cyclists do it- it just affirms cyclists are all self entitled. The thing is the more contact time with motor traffic for a cyclist = greater chance of death or injury. So RLJ can reduce that contact time and reduce possible death or injury. Of course, consideration for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users should be a top priority. If a cyclist runs a red light and they make sure no one is affected adversely what is the issue here? Please concern yourself with the carnage caused daily by motor traffic - the lives ended, the families heartbroken, the tears shed, the pollution produced and not with a few, harmless RLJ cyclists.

That would mean the smallest possible contact time...
@Fredders88

But waiting at a RL means that you are always cycling with traffic. Some RL jumping - all precautions taken when doing it - does give you a head start on the traffic and your overall contact time with traffic is reduced. Your overall journey time is reduced and your time as a very vulnerable road user is reduced. For the UK:"In reported road traffic accidents for the year ending March 2016:there were 1,780 road deaths, unchanged from the year ending March 2015.24,610 people were killed or seriously injured.there were 187,050 casualties of all severities"How many did cyclists kill or injure in this period - I would imagine a tiny amount - concentrate your energies on the killers here and don't fall for the anti-cyclist propaganda BS.

I really dislike some cyclists, I am one myself. I hate saying that but seeing this footage just reinforces my views on it. It's really depressing to see fellow cyclists running red lights in such large numbers, I'd love to speak to them and ask them why they feel that's acceptable or reasonable.

As a person from Germany, my question is "Why does the city organise a bicycle race at what seems rush hour"?

Speaking as an ex cyclist , this annoys me. No wonder so many drivers get a bad attitude towards bike users.

I'm not that bothered when they go through red lights when I'm driving, it's when they don't bother to let anyone know that they're turning. They don't give any signal and suddenly pull out in front of you, it's especially dangerous on roundabouts.

Cycles should be registered, display a registration number and all should be insured, I am a cyclist and get so annoyed with moron riders giving law abiding cyclist's a bad name

+lazycalm41 this is video of exceptionally bad cycling. That's why it's been uploaded. People jumping red lights still in the minority.

Is it any wonder why a lot of motorists hate cyclists? I'm a cyclist, and as an ethical cyclist, it really bugs me when I see cyclists riding through red lights. Cyclists who ride like this give cyclists a bad name.
