This Arsenal team were in their scary peak, while United were on their twilight of the treble winners. As a United fan, Arsenal were too terrifying to watch during that season, having the ruthlessness of Henry, the elegance of Pires, Bergkamp's composure, and bags of speed on their fullbacks in Cole and Lauren, with a midfield capable of shutting down any outlet for creativity on the opponent's side: Vieira and Gilberto were just unbelievable and a pain to play against. I remember jumping round in disbelief when Saha scored: this was how infuriatingly good this Arsenal team were. Downright unplayable. Thank you for uploading this and reminding us of the one and only greatest Prem League rivalry there's ever been. And I wish Reyes's soul a good eternal rest.

As an Arsenal fan I absolutely hated Van Nistlerooy, he was such a LETHAL striker. I just can't understand why Fergy got rid of him. With Kroenke I feel Arsenal will never challenge for titles again. I'm hoping that African Billionaire will convince Kroenke to sell.
@ermiaozimarius24564 жыл бұрын
@@Brodda-Syd Ruud was a textbook striker: scoring 150 goals, only one goal of them from outside the box during his time with United! He was a monster in every sense of the word. I can recall he left in 2006 after a bout of cussing and swearing at Sir Alex for not being subbed in. It's been in the making since 2004, though. Saha came in (was at his prime with Fulham), Cristiano came in few months earlier, and Rooney in the summer of 2004. It was all clear SAF is onto reshaping the attacking frontline of United with more pace and with strikers who are better at supporting the midfield, better at moving and distributing the ball all round. Ruud, sadly, was not the best at that; also he was losing a yard or two due to age (30 when he left). I hope one day soon we can see a revival of the United-Arsenal rivalry. City and Liverpool are enjoyable teams to watch but it's nowhere near the intensity nor the quality of United-Arsenal. Let's hope we're both back at it and sort out the recruitment priorities (one might suppose United were a step ahead in that respect at least in the last two seasons). As for Arsenal, I see they pay their players good money, they can still attract big names and all that. Problem to is they seem always to buy the good players almost exclusively in the attacking third, ignoring the other two. That's why watching Arsenal's team feels there are always pieces lacking.

Once they go down and start rolling around, because of the size difference, 90%+ of Refs would say that the tackle was made with exxecive and dangerous aggression.

@USCFlash5 жыл бұрын
Actually i don't think they "deserved more"...because they never repeated their excellent play domestically in Europe. Wenger finally did adapt, that was their run in 2006. They played, ugly, unattractive defensive football that year in europe, which must have been galling for Wenger. That Arsenal squad went back almost to the 1997-1998, 1998-1999 Arsenal squad in terms of defensive solidity, and style and they did so at the expense of attacking, and it almost worked for them. People forgot that ARsenal's "flowing style" did not actually arrive in full up until Pires' arrival in 2000. Henry arrived in 99 and showed incredible promise and talent, Pires and Wiltord in 00, Cole broke through to the first team as well in 2000-2001. 2000-2001 was when Arsenal finally began to "flow" down the left hand side of the pitch, but they still did not begin to score a ton of goals till the following season, which was the big one for them, 2001-2002. The Arsenal side pre-Henry, of 96,-97, 97-98, 98-99, were ugly, brutal, dominant defensive sides. they suffocated teams defensively with a nearly impenetrable back four and keeper, and had two monstrous holding CM's in Vieira and Petit. they had only one really creative attacker in midfield back then, Overmars, who was great....Parlour was a very effective winger/midfielder adept more at defending, effectively functioning as yet another "lock". Arsenal effectively played a back 8 in those days and it worked quite well. the Arsenal side of 2006, while not playing quite same way in Europe as the 98-99 side did, tightened up and defended instead of attacking....and the results showed and were far better than their previous campaigns, You cannot argue with their european run that year. Arsenal had fallen completely out of the league race, been bounced from the FA cup early....and focused everything on europe. they were 5-1-0 in the group stage conceding only 2 goals vs 10 scored. they then beat real madrid 1-0 over two legs. then beat juve 2-0 over two legs then beat villareal 1-0 over two legs they were so negative, i recall it vividly. they gave up their style to try and win and it worked. almost. in 6 games, they scored 4 goals and conceded none. they had three 0-0 draws, two 1-0 wins and a 2-0 win. so in total in europe, prior to the final - 8 wins 4 draws no defeats 12 games 14 goals scored, 2 goals allowed. i don't think anyone would have called it beautiful, or elegant, but it was finally effective....and a complete one-off. that 2006 team in europe played far more like the 98-99 team, than anything resembling the flowing Arsenal of the previous 5 years

With 9 games to go the title was there to be won but they faltered (Arsenal won just 4 of their final 9 games) and Utd finished strongly for sure. It's just straight up wrong to suggest Utd should've retained the title in 2003-04 though, were Utd 5 points clear in March 2004? No, of course not. In fact Utd didn't even finish 2nd that season, Chelsea did. Arsenal certainly had much more of a shot of retaining the title in 2002-03 than Utd did in 2003-04.

Clearly you've forgotten this was 2004. Studs up tackles weren't an instant red card as they are today - Vieira's studs landed on top of the ball 5:20. This era was the mans game!

Always tuff games between these two sides ,but very entertaining and they both wanted to score and win,some clubs today always play for draws

I was at that game and Keane most definately did not "dominate" Vieira.......didn't you spot your "obvious" spelling mistake?

It's interesting seeing the aerial duels Keane won against Vieria despite being the much smaller man 8:52 Definite penalty on Giggs and RVN could have won it but a draw was probably fair. R.I.P Reyes.

Viera was overated imo

Foul on giggs was outside and he fell into the box. Foul on Reyes was definitely a penalty and possibly the kickout from silvestre on Henry.

I was 14 then. Although Arsenal was unbeatable that season, United still did not lost to them which made me feet so happy. It shows how intense it was.
