You've got it the wrong way around. Supporters are the real deal, they actually properly support their club. It's the "fans" who are often the problem. You hear the term "fairweather fans", you don't hear 'fairweather supporters'. You hear the term 'plastic fans', but there's no such thing as 'plastic supporters'. Supporters follow their club through thick and thin while mere fans are often fickle and lightweight. Fans are people who can just turn up and cheer, supporters are the ones who are truly invested in their club.
