As someone that watches a lot of Italian football Calafiori was linked to Arsenal in March but everyone assumed he was off to Juventus with Motta. Seems post Euros the cost has gone away from what Juventus were willing to pay.

Hey Charles. Love the show. Keep up the good work! What are your thoughts on Zinchenko being repurposed as one of our midfield options? He basically plays there for us anyway, and plays as an eight / ten for Ukraine. Arteta seemingly lost faith in Zinny playing in the back line as last season progressed, and with all the links to Calafiori, Tomiyasu's new contract, plus Timber to come back in (who started as a LB before his injury), why not use him as a rotation option for our six / left eight conundrum? His technical ability is unquestionable, and we know Mikel LOVES versatility in his players.

If we do end up signing Calafiori, I wonder what we would do with Timber. Ben White has pretty much nailed down the right back position. I wonder if we would move Timber to the 6. Timber can pass, can drive forward, can defend. Maybe something we can look into.

Would love Calafiori to join us. He looks like a perfect fit and as well as at the back, he can also play in midfield. The way he can carry the ball out of defence and bomb forward with it and with his style, he reminds me a bit of one Paddy Vieira when he does go forward. Extra time: Hi Charles and James if we do end up selling Nketiah this summer do you think we may try to get Osimhen late on? I think he would offer a different threat running in behind to what we have already and I think the team was crying out for that sort of player at times last season. He’s also very good in the air so would be a threat from crosses. I think if we add someone like Kimmich with his half space crosses and Osimhen to get on the end of them it would take us to another level.

Hey Charles, probably one for you and TNAT and I get it's all about timing but how does our focus swap from Sesko to Calafiori who plays in a position we already have a lot of cover for. I think either Zinny or Kiwior are all set to leave already because if you bring in Calafiori on top of the two lads you can potentially lower any transfer price we get for them. Teams will know we will have to sell on that side especially with KT back in the mix too. Also I'm liking the look of Colliefloweri as well Charles. He looks like a proper 90s Italian Defender a mix of Nesta and Maldini.

Hi Charles, Love from India!!! Teams like Fulham are getting 40M+ for a 29year Old Palhinha, where as we as Arsenal are criticized for placing Eddie for 50M & 30M for Aaron. ESR should easily be a 60m player. His age, nationality and talent should put him in that bracket. look at the players going for 30 to 40 with minimal or no prem experience. Heck Omari is going for 25 or something. ESR can walk into most PL teams and make them better. I'd say he can do that for Arsenal too. He is versatile - LW, L8 and 10. How is that not 60 mill in todays market

Looks like the plan for the back four is to have a continuous partnership for the CB’s and the fullbacks are hybrid. So either of them can fill in at CB if needed. Calafiori looks like a more physical/dominant player than Kwior. It’ll be an in and out replacement. Kwior needs to go and pick up confidence. It’s been a good year and a bit though with him.

The only logical explanation for Arsenal buying Calafiori for ~€50m must be because they plan to sell Kiwor for €30m+ and thus have upgraded the position for ~€20m. Which is approximately the same price they originally bought Kiwor for and it is therefore conceivable that this deal will not influence what else Arsenal want to do in this transfer window. If Arteta has concluded that Kiwor doesn't have enough quality, then it makes sense to make this relatively "cheap" upgrade to a player who might have the necessary quality.

The plan is simple... You have first team quality bench options so the bar doesn't drop when changes are made. Our best on the ball players with high quality defending would be Calafiori & Timber. Those will be our LB & RB respectively with Saliba & Gabriel in Def. If anyone in the back leaves it will be Zinny. His position has become obsolete & wat he adds is negligible

Hi Charles, I have a question for you... Is there a Hale End situation? We have some great talent among our youngsters but there doesn't seem to be a path to joining the first team. There have been a few appearances, but the latest permanent additions to the first team were made by Emery (!), and only Saka is keeping his place. Smith Rowe had a great Summer a year ago, but he was rarely used, not even when fit. Reiss and Patino are on their way out, Balogun, Azeez and Willock left. And it's all fair enough: if they're no match for Arteta's process, then they're not. But this sets a worrying trend for the boys, because they may now feel their career can have better fortune elsewhere (see what's happening with Chido) and we may start losing great talent. During the Arteta era, we have seen the rise of youngsters at City, Chelsea, United, etc (with Mainoo and Palmer now at the Euros). Lamine Yamal will turn 17 next week and he's already shining in Spain's exciting starting-11... Where are our boys?

Great observation! More work needs to be done to rectify the situation, hopefully Ethan Nwaneri can join the senior team and keep his place, the boy looks like the real deal, but I agree, our academy should be producing more than we are doing at the moment.

It's difficult as the 1st team gets better. City regularly lose talent, as do all big clubs, exactly because only the creme de la creme can get in a title challenging side. A good youth set up can produce decent Premier league players that may not be good enough for us now. It's just how it is. Balogun, Azeez, Willock, and Patino are/we're not good enough to be in our 1st team squad- simple as that. Maybe in 2 or 3 years they may well end up good enough but they can't sit around, they need a permanent club and play regularly to hit their potential. But kids (and their parents) know this when they join any big club- it becomes more about the club giving them the best start to their career possible, and Arsenal are coaching the youngsters well. Arsenal aren't sitting on their laurels though, a number of top talent youngsters have been signed for relatively large fees. It isn't the big issue you seem to think it is, at 13, 14, 15 etc you can't tell who will make it- often surprises one way or the other eg Reiss was thought to be our best academy player but its Saka who has truly made it. Look at how long it took Foden to get into the City side? At a lesser club he'd have been a starter a couple of years before. So it does also come down to the players patience and whether they have the confidence that they can make it at Arsenal. Some don't and just want to move a la Balogun.

@@alfredthegreat9543 Yeah I get that, and thanks for taking the time to comment. Like I said, if Arteta believes they're no match for his system, it's all fair enough. My thinking is, Arteta's system is certainly complex, as he seems to cater for every possible scenario in a match and build behaviours that become second nature, with and without the ball. And to master the system, players need to be immersed in it day-in day-out. Therefore, I'd like to see our most interesting youngsters join the training on a more regular basis, feature on the bench to hear first-hand Arteta's instructions during the game and assimilate them, spend more time bonding with the first team, etc. I'm not desperate to see the kids on the pitch every week, as other suggest, but I would love them to see that they have an opportunity and that it's up to them to catch it. Give them hunger and something to aspire to and be inspired by. But while 4-0 with 10 minutes left, let one of them walk on the stage rather than leaving all 3 on the bench... If even that is not a tiny bit of an opportunity, they'll never think they can make it at Arsenal.

It would destroy our academy, why would players come to Arsenal, with Arteta buying talent rather than looking at the Youth? ESR is far better than players like Vieira - who Arteta brought in., Lakonga ditto! A decent manager would use academy players, think George Graham, he brought players through won two titles, F.A. Cup, 2 x League Cup & a European Cup Winners cup!.

Hey there Charles. Should you have to decide between Zinchenko and Kiwior, which one would you choose to let go? I'd say Zinchenko would be my choice. Possibly more money, older, defensively fragile and fans already are reluctant when they see him play. Kiwior is younger, and can play 2 positions. Unless Arteta decides to play him as a left 8 (Zin), which I find highly unlikely. Also if that happens, would you see Timber moved to the CDM position?

Looked up Calafiori's injury record on transfermarkt and I was dumbfounded and shocked 😮, to say the least... here we go! 23/24, 3. [days] 22/23, 49 21/22, 69 20/21, 114 19/20, 42 18/19, 290 May be a coincidence but he was out for only 3 days last season when he changed from a career LB to playing CB?! Im a little concerned about this signing. When Calafiori was 16 or 17, his knee was totally destroyed and had to be rebuilt. I have to imagine that this will lead to additional injuries the more he plays especially if you take into consideration, the physicality of the PL.

Hi Charles, Do you think if Calafiori comes in we could see a defence next season of Timber Saliba Gabriel Calafiori. We know Mikel likes to invert the RB more nowadays than the LB and we have seen Ben White & Thomas Partey earlier in the season/last season do this inverted role from RB. Makes me think he would possibly prefer to invert Timber than White as he is more of a technical player than White and have Calafiori as an upgraded version of Kiwior on the left side.... This leads me to believe White could be rested more this season/rotated with Timber/Tomiyasu and Calafiori/Tomiyasu/Timber the LB options. Might be the end for Kiwior and or Zinchenko. I don't know if Zinchenko is good enough defensively for the next stage of Mikel Arteta's "Process"... Hey Charles, why are we not invested in Jadon Sancho? He can play on both wings, that will allow rotation for both Gabby and Bukayo so minutes will not be a concern for all 3 there. That will also allow Leo to play in his best position at 9 with Kai and Jesus. 3 options on the wings and 3 up front ( with 2 of them also decent wing backups) I think this is a 1 stone 2 birds move.
