A friend asked me what this movie is about I literally said "it's about a man who finds out his elderly aunt's are murdering drifters and getting their mentally handicap son to bury them in the basement." The look I got back was priceless.

@@tammyvrba Not completely: You forgot the first major story about a serial killer played by Raymond Massey substituting for Boris Karloff (and doing a smashup job!) and then there is Peter Lorre playing Dr. Einstein, the spitting image of LORD OF THE RING's Gollum as a younger man. This movie has EVERYTHING!

Actually Teddy is their brother's son. Or possibly their brother? They're maiden aunts. Never married.

I remember the first time I ever saw this; it was '98 and I was thirteen y/o. The last day of school before the Thanksgiving break, our drama teacher had this for us to watch and we immediately became hooked!!!! I'll never forget, we ran out of time - she had to stop the film right when, dum dum DUUUM, brother Jonathan walks in to the dark house!!! What a cliffhanger. We all howled in wanting to know what happened. So I raced home and begged my parents to take me out to rent it, and they did! :)

Such an funny, dark, and quirky movie. I love every character, but especially the aunts. Bless their sweet, homocidal hearts!

The 40s are filled with amazing screwball comedy masterpieces and this is one of the top shelf, up there with 'The Lady Eve', 'Miracle Of Morgan's Creek' and a few others. Cary Grant said that he resented his manic performance in the film but it's now recognized as one of his finest, its perfect

It was said of Cary Grant that one thing that made him such a great comedic actor was that he really didn't understand how completely gorgeous he was, so he never had "airs" about being the suave, matinee idol that he was, just turned in the best performance he could, which was so often more explosively funny than anything (say) Jim Carrey ever did.

The quintessential dark comedy masterpiece. Cary Grant shows what a great comedy actor he can be as a member of the twisted Brewster family. The movie was shot in 1941 but not released until 1944 when the Broadway version had finished its run. Boris Karloff played the demented Jonathan Brewster on Broadway, but opted out of being in the movie. He was replaced by Raymond Massey who give a deliciously evil performance. The constant reference to Jonathan looking "like Karloff" is a joking reminder of who actually played Jonathan. The "movie" that Aunt Abby was so frightened by and influenced Peter Lorre's Dr. Einstein is "Frankenstein" which of course starred Karloff.

1 Samuel 28:7-9 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.” 8 So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, “Please conduct a séance for me, and bring up for me the one I shall name to you.” 9 Then the woman said to him, “Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” Ephesians 6:12 New King James Version 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against (A)principalities, against powers, against (B)the rulers of [a]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 2 Samuel 14:17 New King James Version Your maidservant said, ‘The word of my lord the king will now be comforting; for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king in discerning good and evil. And may the LORD your God be with you.’ ” Exodus 20:13 New King James Version 13 “You shall not murder. Romans 6:10 New King James Version For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Romans 4:4 New King James Version 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. Psalm 57:6 NKJV They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah Psalm 56:5-7 NKJV 5 All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. 7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! Revelation 16:6-7 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, And You have given them blood to drink. For it is their just due.” 7 And I heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.” Matthew 24:7 New King James Version 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. Isaiah 24 New King James Version Impending Judgment on the Earth 24 Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants. 2 And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor. 3 The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the Lord has spoken this word. 4 The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left. 7 The new wine fails, the vine languishes, All the merry-hearted sigh. 8 The mirth of the tambourine ceases, The noise of the jubilant ends, The joy of the harp ceases.

Revelation 18:20-24 New King James Version 20 “Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!” Finality of Babylon’s Fall 21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore. 22 The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.”
