Arshile Gorky: The Eye-Spring

‘The eye spring...’ André Breton once said of his friend, ‘Gorky is for me the first painter to whom this secret has been completely revealed.’
A seminal figure in the shift to abstraction that transformed twentieth-century American art, this documentary provides an introduction to the career, influence and powerful visual language of Arshile Gorky (1904 - 1948). This film features Harry Cooper, Senior Curator and Head of Modern Art at National Gallery of Art, Washington; Maro Gorky, daughter of the artist; Gorky’s widow, Agnes Magruder (later Agnes Gorky Fielding); and Matthew Spender, editor of ‘Arshile Gorky: The Plow and the Song’.
‘The Eye-Spring’ is directed by Gorky’s granddaughter Cosima Spender, and was first screened alongside last year’s retrospective exhibition at Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice. Presenting over eighty paintings and works on paper, ‘Arshile Gorky, 1904-1948’ was the first Italian museum survey dedicated to the artist, shedding light on the Gorky’s early artistic dialogue with Cézanne and his later influence on abstract expressionism.

This is an amazing story. Mostly untold in the art history lectures. The most telling part at first watching was the bit about the farmer cutting the grass. "it broke his heart, he was slugged again." This is an artist. The intensity of experience- of interaction is complex and mostly unfathomable. "Slugged again." Few of us even know what that must mean and yet- it is the province of most artists. Thank you for this documentary.

Well said Sir. This man saw everyone thru his soul. There was no obstacle. When a person suffers as much as he did. One has two choices only. Keep the suffering all the way till you die or search for the beauty of life even in the smallest sightings.

@@ivonned32 Thank you!. It was just so poignant, amplified by the fact that Gorky was but a passing footnote in a survey art history lecture. I learned later that art history is built from the stories- stories of every artist and every art work. They are mostly lost in then :"facts" teachers put forth.

I was very fortunate to learn about Ashile Gorky in my very first art class; the professor liked my work, and said it reminded him of Gorky; I love his work still, more than 50 years later. I studied with a pupil of Arshile Gorky who worked at his studio in New York....Will always remember: The last Statement on a long banner across the studio: "Goodby my Beloveds.." Arshile Gorky passed by suicide. But recollections of stories of Gorky and his art...beyond description...a kind, lonely man...

i believe the footage of his widow is from the 2011 doc by Cosima, "Without Gorky." Really incredible and gorgeous & on Netflix. Highly recommended
