Concert & Conversations: Ep. 8 | Alana Youssefian Talks Vivaldi and Co-Conspirators
Concert & Conversations is a weekly series that brings Ars Lyrica artists from the stage into your home. Each week features a mini concert alongside personal stories and insight recorded from the home of the featured artist.
In this episode, Alana Youssefian recalls her performance at Venetian Carnival on New Year's Eve 2019, which featured her and Elizabeth Blumenstock, her teacher, mentor, and co-conspirator. Alana goes into how it feels to play with your teacher, how she interprets Baroque violin music, and the passion she has for collaboration.

It's performances like this that prove Vivaldi's music isn't just the notes, the virtuosity, and whatever else-it's about the people in the music, the performers who become vessels of the dialogue, who make it their own for us to experience: raw humanity. What else but this...special(!) art can bring people together as this piece did in that cadenza, where not just the music of joy but those silent exchanges between Alana Youssefian and Elizabeth Blumenstock that paradoxically translate into sound can be witnessed? That is a connection only the greatest of composers can harness and which only the greatest musicians can embody. Here with have that bridge between Vivaldi and these soloists. Here we have music.

I have always enjoyed your interpretations and beautiful playing. I am an adult student, and I study with Jonathan Garabedian, whom I believe you know. Keep up all the wonderful work you do. I love baroque music and you inspire!!

This video is so important because there is the corporationization of Vivaldi. They always play the same basic, early pieces of his..if not that, Bach. Vivaldi needs to be discovered by the masses. He wrote some truly difficult, complex music of that period and actually inspired Bach. It’s wonderful to see some of these Baroque societies expose Vivaldi. 5:59 for example.

Thank you for this brilliant comment! Yes! Vivaldi seems ubiquitous, but the breadth and depth of his work is truly not known.

@@ArsLyricaHouston It was great to receive a response so quickly! Del Vivaldi, a KZbin channel contains the pieces (RV, some not having an opus # past 10, since Vivaldi stopped publishing around 1730 and only selling to close friends) that show the manuscripts, many from the Turin collection. Seeing the handwritten autograph scores, some copied by Pisendel, is truly spiritual 🙂
