I love hearing Jerma be passionate about Chrono Trigger. It’s a really fantastic game, and I understand that as time changes the important contemporary art changes (hence why FNAF is just as meaningful to some people) but I also do hope that people revisit games from the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, etc. There’s a lot to learn about game/art history there. (EDIT for clarity: my point is that I accept how Chrono Trigger isn’t as relevant to audiences today, like in that poll. Doesn’t change how it’s relevant to the RPG genre’s stylistic development. I think it should be kept around for those who wanna play it or learn about RPG’s roots). And I also get how Ster feels about that toy doc on Netflix. Looks like it’s trying to shape nostalgic millennial identity around Hasbro and Mattel. To me it seems more materialistic because a transaction is necessary for a physical object whereas not for games which can be experienced without transaction (not that I’m encouraging it…). These days someone could play Chrono Trigger without spending a cent, and it could still be relevant to audiences today if they were interested enough in video game history/art history to play games that aren’t brand new IPs. I suppose people don’t take this seriously though because video games are still a pop culture thing and not ‘high art’. To me this is all a type of art history and not just nostalgia.

This this this. It makes me sad that Nintendo, for example, is actively *against* fan remakes/emulation of their older games. Because, like it or not, that’s the main way older games are preserved in a less volatile state than just hardware. It’s crazy to me that more game companies aren’t scrambling to permanently preserve all of their published games for generations to come. (Well, i guess it isn’r that crazy. When the motive is profit, spending resources to preserve games not for the purpose of sales would seem a complete waste, sadly…) Sometimes I just think of all the games out there that’ll never be replayed, all the games that slip through the cracks even today when online marketplaces and servers are shut down, when old domains are neglected and websites go down, or when something like Flash is phased out of browsers.

@eddiejames4006 You make some good points. I do see lots of brands these days pandering to nostalgia. I haven't seen the Netflix doc you speak of, but I do think nostalgia for particular physical things is good too. My personal hobbies have always been a mix of playing games and tinkering with my Hot Wheels and Matchbox- I think having good variety of interests like that is important for everyone. I feel confident when I buy my cars too. The designers who work on HW/Matchbox are enthusiasts for their work, and the cars are made with quality and care in Malaysia and Thailand- Matchboxes even have a little elephant on the bottom to denote their Thai origins! There's lots of heart and soul that go into those cars, and that's what makes them special.

Jerma gushing about Chrono Trigger and Ster despising a nostalgia driven documentary series says so much about what kind of people they are. I get what Jerma is saying, Chrono Trigger was very influential to a lot of people and to rpgs as a whole, but probably not as well known (especially nowadays) as he thinks. And Ster is just judging a book by it's cover, the Toys That Made Us is a great series with the Movies That Made Us being even better. I get what he's saying too but the series is actual just about how these huge toy companies and brands came to be like GI Joe and Transformers. It's very interesting and not about a bunch of manchildren idiots gushing over nostalgia like what I assume he thinks it's about.

queer ppl really like fnaf, and there's a lot of gay & trans ppl in their audiences, sooooo- but in all seriousness, for people a bit younger than jerma & ster, it was much more accessible to play fnaf. i think it having a $3 mobile app helped a fair amount with its popularity. tbh i didn't even know there _was_ a chrono trigger app until looking it up for this comment. i only knew of the snes and ds versions. (also the chrono trigger app is $10, which is a lot in the mobile game sphere). i never got into the series myself, horror isn't my thing and i have a fear of animatronics, but i remember kids going NUTS abt it at the after-school program i went to. it was actually to the point where it got banned because other kids were seeing it and getting upset/scared by it! it had that classic "push" of being a new fun thing that you just _have_ to try out, *but* it's only just a tap away right on your ipod/tablet!!! and, whereas as wonderful and impactful chrono trigger is, i don't think a kind of "rerelease" would be able to garner the same amount of clamor. chrono trigger's initial popularity happened during a time when less people played video games because less people had access to the mediums video games were found on! not to mention the myriad of youtubers covering the game, as it was new and trending content basically _begging_ to be made. it also allowed people who didn't own the game to still be able to _experience_ the game. *tldr* easily accessible, free-to-view endless torrents of videos, a $3 price point, availability on just about any non-brand-specific device you might have, and a largely child audience? that's basically a recipe for success also, it was much easier to produce & make a profit off bootlegs of a game made by some random guy than a game backed and trademarked by large, well known gaming companies :P also also, sorry for how long this. is i was perhaps feeling a bit sillay
