What do you think? Should someone be able to own a colour?

I remember when Anish did this, and i was thinking at the time 'can you do that?' lol. But yes I don't think it should be encouraged to patent colours.

Instead of Vantablack - dull - I would have named the color Fuligin. In Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun" novel series the color is described as the hue that is darker than black. Way more fun. And no, nobody should be able to own a color. I understand if the company holds some kind of patent on the process of applying the color but giving exclusive rights to one artist - no. Kapoor ain't all that.
@sladeswanson10133 жыл бұрын
because it is not a pigment per say, it is actually closer to a material. the reason for its name, Vantablack, is because of what it is, a Vertically Aligned Nano-Tube Array, or VANTA, getting the name, VANTAbalck. even if Kapoor didn't have the exclusive rights to using the material in art, almost no artist would be able to use it, as it can only be GROWN, yes grown, not made, in a lab, and is VERY delicate, to the point where touching the material will ruin its unique blackness properties. The lab that has the patent to make this material only operates in the UK, and will not export any item coated with the material, due to it violating some export law the UK has. While getting exclusive right to use the material was a bit of a dick move, yes, pretty much no other artist would even be able to use it if it was available. This is why we now have MUSOU black, as it can be painted, and is readily available to the public. Hely, be gla even Kapoor has the right to use it in art, the company that makes it, Surrey Nano-Systems could just as well have licensed it to no artist at all.

The problem with Kapoor is that so much skill is wasted on a stuck-up, rude individual. No matter how talented you are, if you're a tool, no one will like you.

Being stuck at home... like I said yesterday, I'd rather be bored and safe than the opposite. As for color, it's a weird one. While a company always trademarks their colors, they usually don't mind other people using it as long as it's not associated with their brands. But an artist is not exactly a corporation. And while their art is their branding, preventing others from using certain colors is kind of a low blow. Luckily, imitation colors always pop-up and there's not much they can do about it. I don't think many people would be able to tell the difference between Vantablack and Musou Black.

Funny, lots of huge companies like Monsanto try to own TREES and SEEDS as well--especially trees in 3rd world countries like India. This happens in the argicultural industry a LOT. then they force farmers to pay to plant the trees coming from their OWN country. Big companies do this, always licensing/patenting so they can earn money and prohibit others to earn as well.

The irony of this feud is that it adds to Kapoor‘s fame. I used to live in Chicago, which is where the Bean is located, but nobody in Chicago could tell you who made it, because nobody cared. There was also some racism likely going on, in that Kapoor‘s name is not Irish so people automatically block it out of their heads as soon as they heard it. Stewart Semple saying his name over and over again is putting Kapoor‘s name in the heads of regular people.

To be fair, it also ruined his name with the general public. If you go on any of his social media accounts, the comments are FILLED with trolls calling him “bean boy” and calling him a selfish prick etc. So now he’s more known outside of the art community, but he’s known for a shitty reason. He gained notoriety and no decent person wants that 😅

Hello , I love your KZbin videos , I have a BFA from Concordia Montreal but I live in Mexico . I was wondering if u know the concept “hamparte” it’s being used a lot In the Spanish art lexicon , it’s like phony or fake art .. dunno . But is just that I haven’t found en English language equivalent or a concept used in English that can really encompass what we in Spanish refer to Hamparte . Interesting topic for a video ? It's strange to me that Kapoor got all the hate when this was a sale between two parties. Kapoor did not own Vantablack; Surrey Nanosystems did, by owning the patent. It's a material, not just a color. Kapoor bought an exclusive license to use the material in art; he did not 'buy a color'. And SN chose to sell that license to him. So why weren't people just as angry at Surrey Nanosystems? Maybe because the media mislead people by reporting that "Anish Kapoor bought a color!", as you are doing here.

It’s an interesting story. Is it capitalism? I guess they are sensitive to that in the art world? In the commercial world, many big players have copyrighted, designs, technology, sounds, colours, words, etc, and protect them stringently. Many smaller players have been sued and lost, if they even appear similar to a big brand.

Semple is one of my heros. Sadly this ethos has aged like milk. He now sells his products under the same guise for exorbitant prices. The whole accessibility and democratization aspect is now only available for the highest bidder.

I may be wrong but I don't understand what's so wrong with it. People in other industries do it all the time too. Some companies patent technology or buy it, a secret recipe in the food industry, or buy rights for a character in the entertainment industry. They do that so only they have access to it. If everyone has it the value of their product would decrease. He saw an opportunity and took it. What's so wrong with that?

These was nothing written about Anish's parents being a billionaire or millionaire. So I don't understand some of your hypocritical points in the last 3 minutes of your video.
@tosvus3 жыл бұрын
Is that you, Anish? She wasn't talking about your background, she said once you were successful and rich, you decided to try to close the gate behind you to stay the "Top Dog". Clearly you are a great artist Anish, but Stuart Semple is a great man.
@S_P_A_C_E_DD2 жыл бұрын
The premise of this video is completely wrong. Anish Kapoor didn't ask for exclusivity rights, the company that invented Vantablack (Surrey Nanosystems) insisted on working exclusively with only one artist. The fact that you're blaming Anish for this is remarkably ignorant. Did you even do any research for this video? Edit: Also Stuart Semple is a grifter and a conman who has dragged Anish Kapoor's name through the mud to sell his paints.
