This artwork unfortunately doesn't "reach" anyone outside a small group of critics, industry insiders and investors/collectors looking to make money, and almost all of it skims along completely unnoticed, having never been seen by 99.999% of humanity.

@@kenn3250 Your point actually aligns with (@ifmbm332b’s). Your unique interest is no doubt derived from your exposure to your “home” influences; which knew who and where to go to infuse themselves….& you. Sure…. The millions you extol are connected, and continuing to “game” the art industry as to who may enter…. or not….. Thus …. the auctions, collectors, investors ect. are by industry wide osmosis; that is……. The proverbial tail wagging the dog… ( as it were )….. lol Of course , as a 67 year old jazz composer, inventor, short story writer, and sketch artist…… I’ve come to understand that being a devout artist, exists primarily as a coping mechanism in this paradoxical world….. ( I couldn’t help myself…. I “ need to create! we all do!🤷🏿‍♂️) Just ask the millions of penniless artists who’ve come and gone….. completely unrecognized as I am…. at least… so far…lol Even by the closest of family members! Their virtually oblivious to my intense connection with art?……. Go figure!… lol Sooooo, if joining the billions of web owners and internet users can get any artist to get eyeballs & wallets opened…… bravo. Sure, artists could use the money…… but it shouldn’t be the objective.😢 I’ve got some things I’d like the world to see, use, and hear……… But…… it’s mostly because the project participation are tied to insuring my sanity FIRST!….. lol then assisting with whatever musical connection, visceral appeal, literary communion, or tangible gadget I may concoct to make life better for us humans …….😮lol But…… the way the art industry has evolved is a product of “value misalignment”. We, as a species have not evolved to the point of valuing LOVE…. as the ONLY WAY TO EXIST! Since art and expression are key elements used on the pathway to understanding, acceptance, and love….. it’s usually the first things attacked in harsh societal structures. In short…. MAN NEEDS MORE TIME! That won’t happen til…. oh I’d say another 200 years or so! The universe is grinding us in that direction….. with help from the “ creator of LOVE “! We are very intelligent beings….. once we get out of our own way…. those in the art world…. will FLOURISH along with mankind…. with more that enough….. for all…. AS IT WAS….. intended….. Greetings from Chicago! Have a great spring Kenn! God bless🕯 🎼RAIN AGAIN 🎼

I have a hard time understanding why some of these artists made the list. It feels as if the fine art world only recognizes art as great if it has no element of realism whatsoever.
@hedonismbot3274

Because it is an ideology. It has nothing to do with skill and even beauty is being laughed at. If they only knew that beauty matters (roger scruton). They intellectualize trash and feel superior because the "mob" just does not understand their "genius". And these contemporary artists just ride the wave of trash til it breaks. And it will break. People are tired of this shit.

@@hedonismbot3274 The Realist painting movement from the mid 19th century is home to my favorite painters (Corot, Millet, Manet, Courbet, Le Page etc.) But the general public not understanding or liking contemporary art has kinda been the rule of thumb since the Impressionists, and maybe some of the Realist as well. Folks like you and I probably wouldn't have liked Van Gogh and Monet in their time... I dont like this shit either, but it serves a purpose- to discover new ways of sharing our experience. The only thing lamer than the art in this video, would be to indefinitely make art everyone agrees is cool. I cant defend Marlene Dumas though, that one completely baffles me.

The Pop art movement has become the voice of the moment. It is easy to understand and popular with the masses, which is it's intention. The power of a quick easy read is what propels many of these artists into fame during their lifetime. There are more complex and "slower burning" movements happening that may outlive or replace Pop when people are sick of slick and surface level understanding but for now, this gives everyone access and pleasure so it is good at fulfilling it's intent, to appeal to the masses.

Andy Warhol and Keith Haring stand out in Pop because their work goes deeper. It doesn't merely contain colorful and bright imagery, but has stories and touches on themes that are poignant and complex. Rather than merely painting a skull, for instance, Haring was looking into the face of AIDS, a major cause of premature death in his generation. His work deals with income inequality and racial justice. He's not just making silly faces and colorful merry go rounds, though he does that well too.

The artists here like Doig, Dumas and Keifer are making important political and visual work, with just enough realism to allow you to see a recognizable image in the painting. But the paint is more real. What you are calling realism is what Picasso said was a lie... the illusion of 3 dimensions on 2 - or the likeness of a portrait can be captured by film and now by artificial intelligence. These artists go beyond representation into the possibilities of paint.

This reminds me why I like classical art more. The art today, of course, represents today's vision, which includes (sometimes complete lack of) morals, disregard for history, superficiality, cheapness and profitability, pandering, disillusionment and globalism, lack of faith,of heroes and models. It's not that I dont like the art so much it's that I dont like today's world.

For me I am always attracted and curious when an artist work from an interplay of reality, memory and imagination - but still art is also always colored by the total awareness and sensitive presence - and in that Way for me the mysterium of art cannot be only in the analyses of style, techniques, themes, concepts etc, something more - in some way behold the words but yet it can be felt as signifikance and wonder🎶💜🎵🦄

Most modern art substitutes weird for quality, narrow isms for scope, and trendy for depth. It also refuses to change or even talk about progressive ideas in art like those that follow Too many treat art as a marketing scheme. Modern art has become a trendy clique and the art now is mostly over promoted footnotes to greater art that was done 100 years ago. But art is too important to be reduced to a trendy clique. Post-ism, is art for a new century, not a continuation of last century trends. 1 Mass Market Paintings like Prints. When any art form is mass marketed it enters a golden age. This has happened with books, records, and film. Let's add paintings. Most art is in storage in museum basements. Mass Marketing allows art to tour in copies and allows artists to make royalties on copies. Why do you think the world gets so excited about a new great book, record, or film; but no one cares about a new great painting? All are mass produced except the painting. 2. End a Century of Isms. Dump the genres and formulas and let all kinds of art be a part of the art world. 3. Shift Emphasis From Trendy to Quality. Shift emphasis from the latest trendy art, to quality art in any style. Just because art is weird does not mean it is great art. 4. Free the Art From Museums and Galleries. Get the art out of the ivory elitist museum and gallery towers and back into the world. Have city art centers open to all artists. Make art that is relevant and communicates with people. Start with the first generation of artists online. 5. Postism is Part of a Bigger Revolution. Postism is part of the bigger art and media revolution out of Dallas, that includes art, music, lit, film, media, and a lot more. 6. Postism online: Online artists are the new wave of art. We had all the isms of last century. Now we have a free for all, of all kinds of artists, that are not sanctioned by any museum or gallery, displaying their work. Out of that comes the next wave and revolution of artists. Last century the goal was to fit the ism. This century the goal is to do great art - no ism, no boundaries. Fractionalized art then, synchronized art now. Even calling something modern art is a type of ism that separates that art from the art of the past. The 20th century was a century of experimentation in art. Now in the 21st we can choose from all those styles and / or start one of our own. Then too if someone devises a way to charge and collect a penny per view on a webpage, that would allow any great artist to get money for their art and have a career without any middlemen. Duchamp broke ground 100 years ago - but now his clones are just shoveling dirt. Weird art is easy, you put a strip of raw bacon across an expensive violin, but it's not good art. Join the art revolution and pull the art world out of last century. Musea since 1992.

Malevich's "Black Square" put an end to the depiction of reality and laid the foundations for the development of all contemporary art. Before the First World War, Hobbes' ideas reached their limit, as historians say, the spirit of war was simply in the air. 1911 Gioconda is stolen, the French blame the Germans for everything and France is going to declare war on Germany. The feeling of the inevitability of the approaching end was expressed by Malevich with his Black Square. In the future, his ideas will serve as an impetus for Victor Vasarely and the creation of a new style in Op-art art - on the basis of which all computer graphics are built. We are on the verge of discovering a quantum computer and light plays the main role here, so "Victory over black..." kzbin.info/www/bejne/d326aWCqmNGFfs0 is inevitable.

my friend did you ever done even 1 art piece yourselves...the art has to come from the bottom of your heart...then might mean something... not just because it sells for millions or because some crappy art critic say it good... i have seen lot of work on Facebook by unknow artist that is 100 000 time better than those top artists...top artists by your own opinion that's not the opinion of the rest of the people... so dont make overstatement... Its like McDonalds... everyone know its junk food but you try prove its healthy ...😂

Oh boy!!!! The announcer sounds like a typical art critic. I apologize now because of what I am about to say which is definitely going to sound like a troll. Who decided , other than Hockney, any of these "artists" were worth anything more than the cost of the material they used? There are indeed true fine artists in this world, but almost all in this video are NOT. The "dumbing of the world" is upon us!!

My thoughts exactly! Unfortunately we live in a time where the only thing that matters is visibility, everything is art and everyone an artist. People in this video are grown up versions of those kids we all new in school who liked art but were bad at it. Apparently you just need to convince enough people that your lack of skill is personal style, I guess you have to start with yourself, when you believe it others will too. Making a video of 12 painters today, in a world of billions, and deciding to showcase these people is just sad.

All of the artists featured here are well respected and well established, have published monographs, large exhibits at major institutions and have sold for big money at auctions. I don't think these are ideal metrics to judge art by but what do you suggest?

Art without morality has a negative impact on society, as does everyone and anything else without morality. Works that are dreary, deliberately shocking or infantile do not raise up the culture. We shouldn't underestimate the poisonous effects of greed and cynicism in art upon our lives. How about some joy, beauty and inspiration? Remember that?

Art always reflects the zeitgeist which at this time borders on collective insanity and being anywhere or anyone other than real. It's not even escapism. Nor is most of it great abstraction. It's almost like a rejection of beauty - the one thing that can save the world according to Dostoyevsky. Clearly the flourishing craft movement had a huge influence/impact on a few of these - in particular the Asian artists because the category where I would place certain works in, is craftart. Nothing moves me - not like Van Gogh whose work brought me to tears at London National Art Gallery. We must really get back to basics with fine art. We've lost the plot. I'll draw the line with Hockney, Dumas and Richter. There are still some really great artists out there, but I guess they're too real/not mental enough for a modern pr story. Spindoctors don't fool those who understand great art.

art marketing over art history, and where did you get your degree? Jasper Johns and Richard Estes changed the way we see art and should replace some of your candidates. Some of these artists you list recapitulate style and contemporary movements, and are sensationalized by media providing no true foundational change to contemporary art.

Yet no Mark Bradford? Nickzad Nodjoumi? Kehinde Wiley? Prices of works does not equate to how important that artist's work is in the dialogue of art's representation of the human experience. Your method of approach to this "Top 12" is basically like saying "12 most sought-after cars in the world!" without realizing that only a fraction of those 12 are doing to really move humanity... which is the point of art.
