I had a very strange thing happen, once upon a time. I got home from work and turned the news on, and the lady said, "After the break, the Jazz World loses an Icon." I just absent-mindingly said, "Must be Art Blakey". And after the commercials, the news came back on, and sho nuff, it was Art Blakey. That was 1990, and it has weirded me out ever since. PS: I met Cameron Brown when he was playing with George Adams, Don Pullen and Dannie Richmond. What a great group that was!

I had tickets to SEE Art & The Messengers in Boston right before he died and the show was cancelled - we were IN the club and the show was cancelled! And then a day or so later he was gone. A damn shame because he wasn't really that old. Yeah, even when I was in my early-20's 71 didn't seem that old. It seems even younger now that I'm almost 60! Thanks, as always, for posting this.
