It's nice to see the great Walter Davis Jr. in the piano chair,as he is not usually mentioned among the Messenger alumni, since he had relatively short stints with the group as compared with Bobby Timmons or Cedar Walton. But Walter was also a fabulous composer who recorded extensively with Jackie Mclean, Donald Byrd and many others.

Lee Morgan was so young and beautiful. Art put together the best bebop band since Miles Quintet. Go man go! I love KZbin 😅

What did you think of these guys at the time? Did you think you'd be playing with Wayne Shorter for Miles about five years later?

I have seen this over the years so many times and it continually thrills. Such mastery by all. Buhaina! The incredible ensemble playing, fire breathing Lee! The adventurous Wayne already foreshadowing what was to come. Walter with his nod to Bud and Bobby Timmons and the supple but strong Jymie. Incredible bassist. Visually the colorization negatively affects the clarity and the edits are choppy on this upload but I digress.

One of the best Lee Morgan solos (stoked by the volcano Mrs Blakey's little boy Arturo) ever on Close Your Eyes
