I was inspired by Emily Powell to hang my abstract acrylics (painted on butcher paper) along the wooden fence in my yard. I have two I am getting ready to put ON my house. Sure, the muggy weather in South Carolina eventually takes them, but what joy! I'll just paint more! Thank you, Sandi. I am looking forward to artists reviewing YOUR artbooks. You art is powerful!

The most invaluable thing about your channel for me is hearing how positively you talk about your own work. Even if it's something you don't particularly like you don't trash it but find something redeeming about it. Your sketchbook swatching pages made me wonder if you've seen the new book, "Color Charts: a History" by Anne Varichon? The history of colour in paint and prints and textiles etc. A huge book! Could be used as a small table itself never mind putting it on one! $69 CDN.

Sandi, Sandi, Sandi ! When I saw the topic of this video, I had to stop and get a cup of coffee! ☕ Folk Art - I never get tired of it ❤ Currently enjoying 1. American contemporary artist. Shara Hughes. There are several books. (colorful, markings, texture, forest settings, Intuitive & doesn't premix her paints ) I think you would like Shara. 2. Ludwig Bermelmans, best known as the illustrator of the Madeline picture books, but his other artwork is something to behold. Viewing is hard to track down. Google Images. My local library had volumes on his life & art. So charming. Mostly, from his life in France, 1940s - 1950s. 3. Never get tired of David Hockney 's "Spring Cannot Be Canceled" 4. Oceanic Art ! For those who currently cannot fund book buying at the moment, do visit the thrift stores & charity book sales. And, visit your local libraries. You'll be amazed what you will discover. So many old gems waiting for you💕 As always, enjoyed your sketchbook tours. The birds w/ flora & plants with dark background - stunning. The Geese 🤗 Sandi, thank you for all you do. Please know you are much appreciated. 💕 I must stop now, as I just feel like painting. 🙋♀️

A new favorite of mine is a book/exhibit catalog called “Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee.” Her work is very folk-y and charming - often landscapes. In some ways her work reminds me of yours Sandi! The book really shows her evolution as an artist. Some of favorites pieces are more towards the end of her career when she melded that with abstraction.

If I were to recommend an art book, it would probably be "The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson," it has an image of a fall landscape with a bright blue sky on the cover. It covers this historic group of Canadian artists who worked primarily with landscape imagery. The range of how this group of seven artists all interpreted landscape is fascinating and I reach for this book often.

I have an incredible library of art and folio books but I haven't bought any for a long time. You made me go back to my wish lists and see what is there. I think if there is an art book or folio book that you are in love with you need to buy it IMMEDIATELY. They soon go out of print, never to be available again, except in the second hand market. I was a keen book buyer back in my youth. Some of the books I bought back then are now worth $1200 and up. They still remain a source of inspiration to me.

@@sandihester Two of the most valuable books I own are on medieval manuscripts. They were both published in the late 1980s. What's fascinating is that since then there has not been another broadly comprehensive book on the subject published (I mean a folio style book with tons of gorgeous images).

I would recommend looking up the artist Emily Knwarreye. Absolutely amazing artist. There is also a landscape artist called William Robinson. His paintings are interesting because he paints the landscape as he experiences it, so in parts of the paintings the trees are upside down, because when he looked up, he saw them that way or something. Things in his paintings aren’t always on a normal flat perspective. He also does whimsical farmyard paintings with cute and funny cows, goats and chickens in them. Sandi, just came across a painter who is all about colour and mark making - and often the human figure painted extremely loosely: Katherine Bradford. She's American and has a ton of videos interviewing her. She doesn't like the term "naive" applied to her painting, just says her style is "direct". The more I watched her, the more I thought you would enjoy her human figures. Her palette is a bit like Emily Powell at times.
