I just finished my freshman year of art school and this video was so helpful! I've def realized that doing assignments for classes only takes you so far. You have to be creating outside of class aswell in order to actually develop your own style and skills.

I actually graduate high school in a week so this video is greatly appreciated! I've been so caught up in creating an online personality, I forgot this is my time to explore new interests before I choose a solid career path. I have a comic that I started last summer but couldn't work on it during the school year, and I'm so excited to start working on it after viewing this. Thanks so much for the inspiration and wise words!

Do you actually like graphic design? So many of my college friends that went to school for graphic design because its what they felt was the most financially viable art degree pretty much all work in the service industry now because it turns out they actually hate doing graphic design.

@@tsdobbi I've been a self taught artist for about 3 years, and I really want to pursue my art career! I was just a little skeptical because people tell me that it isn't easy to make a profitable career out of art

I've been a professional artist for close to 15 years now and I found Jed's advice to be invaluable! It was something I never quite heard before and made so much sense! It totally spoke to me now and where I am in my career. Thank you!!!

Some great artists in this video! Thanks Jake! Also: SVS Learn is a good starting point for artists of any age! I started getting serious about art "later in life" when I was about 25.

I've recently been getting back into it at 37. I always wanted to be a comic book artist, started college as an illustration major. Then I worried about the whole financial viability and switched to computer science. The thing that annoyed me was I wish I could go back in time and slap myself, when I switched careers I pretty much stopped doing art. It's annoying because when i started drawing again, I was so much better than I was at like 19 with little to no practice over the years and I just got mad at how good i would be now, had I not basically abandoned it over those years.

It's been 12 years since I finished High School. I've volunteered socially for 1 year, conscripted for a desk job for 3, worked in a factory for 1, been in college for 5 and been outside for 2 and I feel I need all the advice I can get.

Step one: get a real career or you'll shorten the rest of your life in comic con
@MrNewsArtClass5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by "real" career, but... There is definitely something to be said about working whatever job pays the bills while you are growing your artistic interests. I was once told: "don't quit your day job until your dream job is already making as much money as your day job." In other words, treat your dream job like a second job while your other job pays the bills.
